Dress Code- The Big Debate

That's me, too.

I'm from the "old school" thinking that cruises have formal nights, and shared dining tables. Yes, I grew up on The Love Boat TV show and movies. And I liked that "feel" about cruising.

I'm saddened by the "casual-izing" of the cruise experience. But it is what it is.
Not to hijack this thread but I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on going back to dressing up on planes too

Not to hijack your hijacking, but I can't tell if you're serious or not. If you are: Planes are transportation, for getting you from one place to another. A cruise is a very expensive vacation. Can't really compare the two.

I was being serious

I always see these tv shows on the history channel and everyone's all dressed up to go flying. Now a days there's casual and people of Walmart casual

I'm wondering if the almighty dollar and tiny cramped seats is what did away with that or if people just said "no more dressing up"

I think it's a combination of the two. But with a heavy leaning toward "It's my trip, I'll dress as I want" attitude.

I go for comfort when flying. However, we do try to look slightly presentable. I suspect it might have helped us in getting upgrades from time to time.

My father in law still dresses up for the airport. We asked him to be "casual" for baseball games and he still wears his jacket, button up, and slacks. I told my fiance to stop pushing it so much as that is casual to his father.

With that said we are cruising this week on a ship that allows no jeans or shorts in public after 6pm and men must wear a coat (suit, smoking, blazer, etc) after 6 pm in common areas. Doesn't matter what restaurant you eat at that night. I am not looking forward to the dress code but will make do. Got a lot of cute dresses to hopefully meet the dress code or I'll be wearinf the same 4 things all 12 days.

And, you know, that's perfectly OK. I have one formal dress, and one cocktail dress that I bring along for my dress up clothes. You can mix up all my formal night pictures and not really know what ship I was on, since I was wearing the same thing.

No one says you have to have different clothes for each night. In fact, I doubt that even your dinner companions (if you share your table) will even notice that you wore that dress, or those pants more than once.

Sadly my mother in law will or it would be much easier! I know this is a reservation dinner situation so I don't think their tables are shared. I've nevr been on this line (Silversea) but fiance has been on a sister line (Seaborn) and said you sit only with your party. There are 19 of us so I imagine we'll split up some nights.

You'll need to know how the party is being split up beforehand so you can decide which outfit you should wear that night! :jester:

[Edit: I can see myself trying to do that lol]

The thing that keeps me from dressing up more than jeans and a button down shirt is, I don't own anything fancier

I look at the suits and vests and I see that price tag attached to it and I can't justify it. I don't see me wearing it except for the two cruises a year

Plus I have to wear black kahkis or dress pants and a black shirt with an apron over that all day for work. The last thing I wanna do is put those clothes on (minus the apron) when it's vacation time

You know, they have pretty good bargains at the local thrift stores (at least around here). I spent $8.00 for my formal dress at Salvation Army. It was actually $12.00, but I got a senior discount.

We got a suit for our son when he was going through that "gotta buy new clothes every 6 months" stage from an independent thrift store for $20.00 one year.

My husband wears a uniform (blue long sleeved shirt, dark pants, dark shoes) every day. He likes being able to dress up.

Ya know we have a goodwill across the street from us, but I just feel dirty going there, maybe it's the scent they pump in there. You are right though it is a bargin paradise there

Maybe...

Sadly, yes, this is now true.

Time was that flying was part of the vacation. Lots of attention and service while flying. Comfortable seats. Convenient flight times.

Yes, I'm old.
If they still handed out Haggen Daaz bars, I'd still dress up.

But really, the cramped conditions are too hard on nice clothes.

But I have to admit I don't like to see people wearing baseball caps in restaurants, feels a little disrespectful maybe.
So glad someone feels this way! I make my kids remove their hats whenever they enter dining areas, churches, and movie theaters (can't stand it when someone is sitting in front of me with a hat on and I can't see)! Hopefully as they grow into young men, this lesson will "sink in" :P

I've had friends find Versace and Vera Wang things in Goodwill (and no, NOT the ones in NYC - these happened to be in Nashville).

LOL I have to agree with you on the scent that is the same at all Goodwills. I started going there again last summer though and found out they added a "boutique" section in all the Goodwill's around us that contains the upper brands and very nice items (formals, upper brand men's suits and tuxes etc) and I found mine and my dd5's formals for last years cruise. I cant justify the higher price just to wear it on cruises so I decided to try Goodwill and succeeded. co worker went on a cuanard cruise and boy they have strict dress codes and he definitely didnt have any of the items required to eat in the dining halls so he went to Goodwill "boutique" sections and over the course of a month was able to put together an entire tux outfit for less than $27 (cumberbun, bowtie, etc included).
