Dr. said no Disney :(

Doesn't this mean that all women of childbearing age should not visit ANYWHERE with mosquitoes? All Floridians in that age range should leave? Disney will become solely a retirement village if we all do that.

I'm still hanging in there at childbearing age, and while I wouldn't go on a coaster while pregnant this isn't something I would think twice about. And I would laugh at any doctor acting like an expert in this brand new thing.

No. It means women who ARE pregnant currently, or planning to become pregnant within a few weeks/months following a trip should not visit the mosquito-y hot spots. If one contracts zika and is not pregnant, there is no risk and the virus will clear in a few short uneventful weeks with no lasting repercussions for future pregnancies.

That stinks but might as well play it safe with a risk factor you have control over. I agree with the other commenters, maybe you can head out to Disneyland for a trip instead :)

I always told myself I would never do Disney while pregnant. But that is just me. Here I am pregnant and won't be going which honestly I am ok with that. We have other things going on in our lives right now to push Disney off till next year. Which I have already started thinking about that trip. Oct 2017 it will be my son's 3rd bday, my daughters 1st bday and my 33rd bday. So big celebration plus we will have moved back to FL so it will make life easier to go.

Look at it this way with Hollywood having construction might be a good time to let it build up again and see whats all new in 2017. That is another reason why I am ok with not going this year. Glad that we have down time for Hollywood to do what they need to do.

I was under the impression that it can affect you for up to 5 years after being infected.

This is the opinion of one doctor. I have not read anything in the CDC's documentation regarding a travel advisory for pregnant women anywhere in the continental US. There has been no documented person-to-person transmission of Zika in the US. There are no special advisories from the CDC regarding pregnant women in the state of Florida.

Personally, I would seek the opinion of one or more other physicians (outside that practice) before making a decision to ban myself from traveling within the US due to a concern about Zika.

I'm a naturally cautious person with two children of my own. I'm also a research scientist, so I tend to look at data when calculating risk. I would be interested to know what data and/or advisory your physician based his or her recommendation on.

Thank you so much everyone for the kind words :grouphug:. Disneyland is a great suggestion and we've been there before (matterhorn is my favorite ride ever!). I'm feeling better today and I think at this point we'll hold off on theme parks until I can go on all the rides anyway. You're right, I just can't go against a dr recommendation with a good mindset. I still think the chances f me potenetially contracting zika are rare, but I suppose better safe than sorry!!! We also planned to do our gender reveal there so of course that's a HUGE bummer too!!!

I believe it has nothing to do with childbearing age, or Florida and just has to do with if you're pregnant or becoming pregnant very shortly and in a confined area with people from all over (like Disney). If you're not pregnant or being pregnant anytime shortly there's no issue as the virus doesn't stay in the blood all too long, however I was told if you're pregnant it can cause severe birth defects. Dr said the problem with Disney (vs other locations with the mosquitos as well) is that you're in a confind area with a lot of tourists from all over (brazil, where zika is an epidemic, etc), so it's more populated and a greater risk (vs just being at a beach or something). He's right in that sense and now that I heard it I just can't go with a clear conscious :(

I'm so sorry!!

I asked with my doctor (I'm in Australia) and he's happy for me to go. I'm not pregnant, but if we plan to have kids, it will be in the next 2 years. I'm wary, but if I were pregnant, I wouldn't want to risk it either.
But that doesn't mean you can't be upset about it!
It's super disappointing.
There will be more trips though, so try to think of those to get you through!!

Any chance you've got an Ohana res for dinner on August 28?

If you don't plan on baving kids for a while you'll be totally fine! I don't know what the time frame is but it's definitely less than 2 years!!! Our ohana is for breakfast I believe on 8/31. Never tried the dinner but I'm obsessed with the breakfast!!!

Wow....I am preparing for IVF cycle and my OB had no issue. She said I was more likely to be killed in a car wreck on the trip down there.. Told me to put on repellent but have a great time.

Ugh I wish mine told me that!!!! But now that he said what he did I can't go with a clear conscious :( have so much fun and good luck this cycle!

So what happens to every pregnant woman who lives in Florida?

From my understanding his concern wasn't with the state of Florida, it was being in a confinded area (park, lines, rides, hotels, etc) with tourists that can potentially have it, get bitten, and then I get bitten. Unfortunately I'm a mosquito magnet and have gotten bitten at Disney many times. I'm super bummed and while I still think it's unlikely that this "perfect storm" will happen, now that he said it and should it happen, I would never forgive myself because it could have been avoided.

I'm sorry. It's so disappointing to have to cancel a trip.

Disney isn't going anywhere though! You'll make tons of special Disney memories in the future.

Congrats to both of you on your impending arrival. :goodvibes

OP: good luck. Just think, save more money until you can take the baby and have a great time!!

Better to be safe than sorry! I wouldn't risk going against the doctors recommendation either. You will get to enjoy lots of Disney once baby is here! Wishing you a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy!

This. So very much this. I've been called a dangerous liar on here before for simply stating that I believe that other factors are at play here, but I'm shocked that a physician would give this advice. Definitely don't do anything you are uncomfortable with, but if it were me, I would see another OB, as well as research it in my own. I am trying to get pregnant, and we have a December trip planned. Based on my research, I feel completely comfortable with my trip. I have not (and will not) consulted my OB about this issue. I'm not trying to give you advice, but rather register my amazement at this. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you can find peace with your decision. It's so disappointing to have to cancel a trip.

I disagree with your doctor, but I also know that if it were me, it would always be in the back of mind and I would not enjoy myself AS MUCH.

FWIW, my best friend is trying to get pregnant, being followed by docs, etc., and she went to Guatemala last month...not a peep was uttered to her by any doc warning about not going due to Zika. Just "bring good repellant and have fun".

Who wants to take 'odds' with your precious baby?? I sure wouldn't! I applaud you OP for your mature stand when you are rightly so disappointed. Some people don't mind taking chances with important things in life, but I'm not one of them - just listen to your Dr. Like you said, you would be completely worried for the rest of your pregnancy instead of enjoying the anticipation. The best to you! :goodvibes

I'm sorry you had to cancel your trip, I would be super bummed as well!!

We just got back from WDW at the end of June, and we were doing some research regarding Zika because we were a little concerned about it. I'm not pregnant and am not planning on getting pregnant soon, but we have a 6 month old and I wanted to know what the effects of Zika were on people who weren't pregnant. I believe I read in research that the threat of birth defects caused by Zika is only if you contract it during your first trimester of pregnancy. Just something to think about. As others have said, do whatever you feel the most comfortable with. But as long as you are constistent with using repellent, and won't be in your first trimester during your trip, you would most likely be perfectly safe on your trip.

Best wishes to you, and Disney will always be there in the future! :)
