Double, Double, Toil & Trouble: a Halloween-inspired trip of “two’s” – an October 2016 TR

Oh my April 29- May6, that's SO SOON! And there's no pre trip report?! And I'm off facebook, how the heck will I stalk you all!?

Also, yes....aunts and uncles are supposed to go to the chocolate store and buy all the treats!? (ha, since you're not on Instagram, you'd missed all the stuff Morgan and I did yesterday...No, I did not (as I shake my head yes) give an 11 month old chocolate ice cream and buy her an otter stuff animal to cuddle with)....and while, I'm not her blood auntie, I'm her Auntie for sure....or as her mom calls me; I'm her best friend. Which is just fine by me!

It's great to share isn't it! And you certainly forget how noisy it can be with younger kids in tow, but it keeps you young and you get to enjoy different things :goodvibes

As a proud auntie (and now great auntie) spoiling the nieces and nephews is an absolute must. My nephews first Disney trip was when they were 6 and 4 (they are now 20 and 18) and any time they said "Auntie Ruthie can I have . . .?" they didn't even have to get the whole sentence out before the item was purchased. And actually, I kinda do the same thing now. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

The best part about being an aunt is the spoiling! You can have fun with them, don't have to say no, sugar them up and send them home!

Capone's look fun! I appreciate the review because without it I would probably have picked the Pirate dinner because it sounds more fun! Will have to pry ourselves away from the parks and try it! We did do a couple of day trips in January. We tried Teak Neighborhood Grill for lunch and it was wonderful! Very quiet as it's off the beaten path from the touristy area! Also drove to Mount Dora- very nice and quaint!

Capone's sounds like a lot of fun. I love food and theater but have never combined the two!

Wahoo for an upcoming fast trip. I would like to do Spring, but with midterms on the horizon, no can do.

When my kids were younger, they wore my sister out. She had no kids, so had to take a nap after we picked them up. Now, she gets to play with rambunctious step grandkids. I think she still naps when they leave. LOL

Nice pictures and cute kids.

Crappy way to start a trip after a long day of travel. I hope you managed some good sleep once you finally got your bags. We are all patiently waiting for pool pics! :beach:
LOL....I watched Titanic in it's entirety. When the bags finally arrived I grabbed them from the guy without even looking at him. Not sure if I even said thank you. I had a couple of things to dig out of my bag to be put in the fridge then flopped on the bed and crashed until 7:30. As I mentioned I'm awake on vacation way earlier than necessary.

No pool pics yet. Today was a shopping day. I do however have this one for you....
IMG_2688.JPG
Unfortunately no Kenny.

That is nuts!! Seriously they stand the same way (at least in the picture you posted) and same facial expressions in the pics! Sounds like they were meant to be brothers no matter what?

They are definitely two peas in a pod :). When Joe got married, many people mistook Steve for his twin. Dress 'em both up in a tux and you can hardly tell them apart! (except, of course, for the 7 year age difference LOL)

I am actually a little panicky about the short time frame from booking to travel. I'm used to having months to work out all the little details, but this time, its literally weeks (and heaven knows we paid the price where flights were concerned :crazy2:......now I know why we always book sooooo early!). You'll probably get little pre-trip chatter here, so while you've given up Facebook for Lent, please don't give up the Disboards :flower3:.

Your relationship with that little beauty always makes me smile.....you can tell from your photos that your time together is just laced with pure joy. I'm going to miss that while you're Facebook-free. I don't have Instagram, sadly, just Snapchat.....and the latter only because Jake made me install it so he can send me pictures and videos over the miles. He sends me lots of little snippets of his little Moo.

A whole different perspective, for sure. They sure tired us out a couple of days, though :faint:. If only we could harness some of that energy and bottle it :rotfl:.

Aw, that is so sweet!! :goodvibes And those are some lucky kids :thumbsup2. Do they remember much about their first trip?

I have GOT to make a point of adding Teak to the itinerary one of these days. You're not the first person who has had great things to say about it. Especially when its up near Universal....we'll be in the area anyway, so it seems a shame to keep missing it.

An idea for your next trip! :thumbsup2

We've had great weather for our last two late April/early May vacations, so hopefully Mother Nature smiles on us again. We're keeping this one fairly simple.....just using our Universal AP's for the Studios & IOA....even though its gutting me to not have a Seaworld day in the mix. With all the extra expenses of moving and setting up her in MI, I would feel bad about adding the cost of single day tix to the budget. So, we'll enjoy Universal to the max and hopefully have a relaxing resort day or two as well.

I think the fact that there were three of them is partly what we found so tiring. After raising a lonely only, three at once seems like a lot :rotfl2:. They are sweet kids, though, and a delight to be around.......even though they exhaust us LOL.

Well, I look forward to hear what ya'll plan on doing so soon! It seems like you've done it all, or at least more than I've done (with 10+ years of living here!)

Ironically enough, I don't have snapchat because I just don't understand it. I've tried. But I don't get it. Instagram is about 100 times easier to understand and use. (or it used to be....I don't understand some of the new stuff they keep adding to it). And honestly, based on how I've felt this week, I am doubting if I will even reactivate it anytime soon. I really thought I'd miss it more, but I really don't. And, it's helped me to be a little more face to face social, which is something I'm in need of my life. I hate living life behind a screen....(...as I type this up....)

And yes, that little girl is pure Joy. Joy I've needed in my life as of late. I can't believe she'll be a year old at the end of the month!

It's official.....we are booked for spring!

April 29th to May 6th. Let the countdown begin :hourglass.

Hey Gina! I'm still following when I can.

Capone's looks great! We will have to include it in a future trip (maybe when DD is a bit older).

We're still planning a 28-30 April trip to Universal. I will keep checking in with you as you make your plans to see if we can meet up! I don't want you guys planning around us, just in case something changes.

Ooohhh Steak and Shake :)

We used uber in November to go from Pop to Target and for our two Universal Days. It was great. And the uber app lets you split the cost with someone else that has the app, so we didn't have to trade off paying once we'd used our free ride codes from referrals.

Gina, have a really yummy meal or visit the Minions to celebrate my birthday for me :) It's May 5. We did Florida for our bdays in 2014 and it was fun. My friend in DC's bday is May 6 so it worked out well. This year we'll just celebrate in late May when I visit. We may need to plan another WDW trip for 2019 when we turn 40, ack. That's the next year I'll be able to go unless I win the lotto or find a way better paying job.

I haven't been to disboards lately and now I'm so behind. Just on page 7 but I just want to chime in....I love your trip reports. We are thinking about Feb2018 as our next Orlando trip. The kids want to go back to Discovery Cove and see Pandora too. What do you think will be better. There are only three of us. The Blue Friday sea world annual pass sale or the discovery Cove sale? I like all the discounts the annual pass gives.

The carriage ride at Frankenmuth isn't that great. It kind of just goes through the parking lots. We love staying at the Bavarian Inn. Sign up for the perks club first though and you get good rates. We love Frankenmuth. I have Trip reports on trip advisor that I can find for you. Your menfolk will love Tony's we ordered 2 sandwiches, a BLT and a Reuben for the three of us. We took home the left over meat and then made 5 more sandwiches with it.

Make sure you get to Greenfield Village. The annual passes there are a good deal. I'm glad you and your kitties are getting settled in. We moved to Toronto this fall and all the animals are settled in.

We HAVE done a lot.....and this trip will probably be our most low-key yet. Especially after having three busy vacations last year, we aren't feeling particularly compelled to squeeze a whole lot of new or extra things in this spring. We have our Universal AP's, so that will likely account for most of our park time just to keep the budget reasonable. After the life chaos of the first part of this year, I also look forward to some relaxing time at the resort.....something we don't always take full advantage of on our trips. I want to play Bingo (yes, I'm that boring). We might even take in an aqua aerobics class or something else fun.

As for Snapchat.....it's not my thing either. Jake keeps telling me "Mom! You're supposed to reply back with a picture, not a whole paragraph!". Let's just say I'm not a selfie girl, and the kittens get weary of mommy telling them to smile :rolleyes1. Yeah, the generation gap is sure prevalent sometimes.

I would have love to have done an Epcot day and taken in the Flower and Garden festival. I think that would really be something to see. But....that would end up being a pretty big chunk of change for a one-day outing (two one day tickets, parking, and food) so we'll probably take a pass. We would be far better off to add a SeaWorld day with the ticket that includes free all-day dining......or, a water park day at Typhoon Lagoon.

I *am* looking forward to checking out the beach in Fort Lauderdale! Our flight doesn't leave until after 8:30 pm on our departure day, so after checking out of the Vistana, we thought we'd soak up some of that salty breeze before heading to the airport.

Fantastic!! Let me know if the Saturday night might work well for you. That's our arrival day, so we'll have no other specific plans. We'd love to meet up for dinner at Toothsome, Margaritaville, or the NBC Sports Grill.

I will ABSOLUTELY visit the Minions on your birthday on your behalf! :goodvibes We missed seeing the completely on our Christmas trip, so I have some lost time to make up for this spring ::yes::.

Steve is still talking about having a vow renewal ceremony in Orlando next May for our 25th anniversary. I am not sure that sweet plan will come to fruition or not, but I think the sentiment is adorable. Who'da thought my big, tough guy would be the one lobbying for a vow renewal?? :confused3

Well hello there my friend!! So glad to have you back and reading along! :goodvibes How have you been? You are continuing to do well, health-wise?

We are having a great time exploring the area, and Greenfield Village is definitely on our to-do list (especially once spring arrives and they have all the outdoor activities to enjoy). Thanks for the reminder :thumbsup2. We had hoped to hit up the Detroit Zoo this Sunday but the weather looks far to wintery for anything outdoors. Thinking we might just have a movie day instead, or maybe visit the planetarium in Flint. We're never short on options here, that's for sure.

As for your SeaWorld options, I'm a big fan of the annual passes. Love the discounts (especially the extra monthly ones), the free parking, the Passmember Lounge access, and the special pricing on DC. Me personally, I'd try and snag the SeaWorld AP's on the Black Friday sale and book your DC admission under the passmember rate. I know we'l be itching for a return trip to SeaWorld by 2017, so I'll be watching that BF sale very closely too!!

Thursday, October 18th (the conclusion)

After the day’s whirlwind of little voices and excitement from the nieces and nephew, Steve and I were admittedly looking very forward to a quiet, adult dinner out. Joe and Lisa had opted to cook in their villa (they are quite health conscious and wanted the kids to eat sensibly for as much of the trip as possible) so we knew they would be well taken care of while we enjoyed a few hours of couples time. Their plan was to have dinner, let the kids release the remainder of their pent up energy at the pool and playground, then tuck them into bed for a good sleep before our full park day tomorrow.

Our dinner destination that evening was a new restaurant for us: thanks to a gift card received from a dear friend, we were set to experience our first meal here:

Maggiano’s is located on International Drive, quite near to Wonderworks (the large upside down house). We found a place to park the car in the nearby parking garage (for a small fee…maybe $3 or $4?) and which left us with just a short walk to the building.

14915460_10155156401291416_1209148959197842754_n.jpg

We headed inside to check in at the podium. They noted that there would be a short wait for a table, and gave us a pager which would alert us when the time came to seat us. We could see (and hear) that the interior was packed with people……while a delay to be seated is always a bit of a bummer, it’s generally a good indicator of food quality if a place is THAT busy.

The lobby, like most places in Orlando, was cutely decorated for Halloween. Autumn is such a fun time to visit Central Florida :).

14925302_10155156401956416_8304424845490464944_n.jpg

We walked around outside for about 15 minutes, enjoying the fresh (but warm) evening, when our pager buzzed us to return to the podium. We were escorted to our table, a great little half-moon shaped booth that gave us lots of space but still allowed us to sit next to each other rather than across. We ordered beverages (two strawberry lemonades on the recommendation of our server) and perused the menu for a little longer before placing our order.

14908216_10155156401971416_9166786326542594950_n.jpg

I can’t remember exactly what the offer was, but they had some sort of special running where you received two full-sized appetizers, two entrees, and two mini desserts for something like $60. It was a good savings versus single items from the actual menu, so that’s what we decided on. Probably way more food than we needed (we certainly didn’t need two appetizers nor were we sure we’d even have room for dessert) but any left-overs could be taken back with us to the villa fridge if necessary :thumbsup2.

For appies, we opted for the Italian Sausage Flatbread (my choice):

14962705_10155156402006416_1066596099915434912_n.jpg

……and a plate of stuffed mushrooms (Steve’s pick…..I’m not a mushroom lover; not because of the flavor, but because of the texture. Blech).

14947547_10155156402286416_6830357410243111157_n.jpg

Those appetizers smelled absolutely incredible and tasted even better. Everything was fresh and hot and perfectly seasoned: the ingredients on the flatbread, in particular, came together perfectly. While a first visit to any establishment is always a bit of a gamble as to whether it will be to a person’s taste or not, we suddenly had high hopes for our entrée selections.

Shortly after our appetizer plates were whisked away (and refills on our strawberry lemonades deposited on the table without having to ask), our entrees were brought steaming out of the kitchen. Steve had chosen Chicken Marsala with Spaghetti Aglio:

14572438_10155156402326416_9082693165742303341_n.jpg

…….while I had opted for the Chicken Parmesan with Traditional Spaghetti:

14947843_10155156402666416_6970286304101558412_n.jpg

So. Unbelievably. Good :worship:. You could taste the quality in every mouthful: it was obvious that everything was homemade and authentically Italian. We also commented that it was easy to see why there wasn’t an empty table in the house: while it was slightly more expensive than some of the more common chain restaurants in town, it was miles ahead in quality. Portion sizes were huge: there was no way I could eat all of mine, and Steve’s was substantial enough that he wasn’t interested in any of my left-overs right then…..how often does that happen?

While we certainly weren’t feeling as if we needed (or even wanted) it, we were provided with the modified dessert menu (a smaller selection of items for the combo offer versus those which were available for patrons ordering a la carte). Our server explained that the portion sizes for the combo offer desserts were also smaller than the standard offerings, a “mini” serving so to speak. We heaved a sigh of relief as our stomachs groaned in protest.

Steve went with the strawberry cheesecake while I had the apple crostata with vanilla bean ice cream.

14955796_10155156400911416_4815493073538378010_n.jpg

Okay, so when I said I was relieved that the desserts were not full sized, I lied. Or, rather, I changed my mind after one bite of that sweet, cinnamonny, flakey crostata. Oh. My. Lord. I would seriously come back and have dinner here just to have another one of those crostatas ::yes::. Their pastry was PERFECT and the taste rivaled the delights that my mom rolled out of her kitchen for decades, and she was the best baker I've ever known. This dessert was unbelievably delicious. Steve echoed similar comments about the cheesecake, and did everything but lick the plate after he was done. So good.

Our server was kind enough to box up our left-overs and delivered our doggie bag to the table with our bill. Our wait staff had been as superb as the food, so she earned herself a well-deserved gratuity. We would definitely make plans to return here again in the future.

14925679_10155156400646416_8359671537424633900_n.jpg

Final thoughts: we loved Maggiano’s, and it definitely exceeded expectations. While it wasn’t a “quiet” meal per se (there were a lot of tables in each room and each were fully occupied, so there was a definitely a buzz in the air) it was very….comfortable. Families were meshing seamlessly with groups from the convention center and everything in between. The price was absolutely justified by the quality and the food taste was spectacular.

We rolled ourselves out the door, back to the car, and made the short drive back to Cypress Palms. We enjoyed a brief but relaxing soak in the hot tub at Pool 1 but the combination of the huge meal and the heat of the water had us feeling completely worn out. We headed to bed a reasonable hour, knowing we’d be up early to make park opening at SeaWorld with the inlaws: it would be their first visit to one of our favourite parks in Orlando, and we couldn’t wait to be their tour guides :woohoo:.

Next: animals, rides and lots of smiles at SeaWorld :fish:.

I'm all caught up. Finally got a chance to read your report. I've been saying I want to go to Magianno's for years. Now I really need to go. There's one not too far away from our house. :)

Wow.. I've been meaning to get to Maggiano's and now I definitely will. I'll need to save like weeks worth of Weight Watchers points though.
Italian food is my cryptonite.

Gina next time you are looking at flights, look at southwest out of Columbus, Ohio. There are 5-6 nonstop flights to MCO per day and fairly cheap

Yum, Italian food is always coma inducing. But we enjoy it too. Maggiano's used to be very close to us, now, the only one I know of, is about 1/2 hour away. Ours serve family style, so it's interesting that they do single servings now. Maybe we'll visit one, one of these days. Hasn't been on our radar since moving out of our local neighborhood. Great pictures.

That is sweet of your DH. We hit 25 years last month, and I can't believe it's been that long. We only ate out dinner in a Mexican place, that we will not repeat. I hope you do have a beautiful vow renewal, in your happy place, or at least have something fun to do on your milestone wedding anniversary.

Carry on.

:love:The crostata looks divine

It's funny but we rarely head onto international drive to eat, but that dessert could surely tempt me.

Your meal at Maggiano's looked amazing! Definitely somewhere we need to try!
