Double, Double, Toil & Trouble: a Halloween-inspired trip of “two’s” – an October 2016 TR

Tuesday, October 18th (continued)

We had long since decided (way back when we were knee-deep in the planning process) that rather than drive to Capone’s, we would give Uber a try for the first time. We had read that alcohol was not only plentiful, but also very good, at Capone’s…..more than just your typical beer and wine….so we both wanted to indulge in a beverage or two (or three, or….) without the worry of driving back to the resort. Just before our departure date, we pre-purchased a Livingsocial voucher for $6 which entitled us to three Uber rides of up to $8 each, so our transportation there and back was going to be VERY cheap. Not only was it inexpensive, but it was FAST: within 5 minutes of summoning a driver, we were tucked into the back seat of a very clean vehicle and on our way to a night of fun :drive:.

While the dinner listed an official show time of 7:30 pm, guests who upgraded to the VIP package were directed to arrive at 6 pm to enjoy the full benefits of the VIP lounge. There were about a dozen people already there when we arrived at 5:55 pm, milling around the entrance in the warm and pleasant evening weather. Promptly at 6 o’clock, a small group of Al’s gangsters emerged from the solid front door and began to provide us with our entrance tickets which included our secret password. With tickets in hand, each party entered together in a group, gaining entry only after the secret password was exchanged through the tiny hole in the door with the New York accents on the other side. [Our password was “2 Cherry Cokes”]

Once inside, a very colourful array of Capone personalities took our mug shots (souvenir photos were offered for sale later in the show, delivered right to your table) and then a gangster wasted no time in leading us up to the VIP lounge. From the lounge, we had a great view of the lower level seating area and the stage, and we wondered aloud where we would be placed when it came time for dinner:

14910372_10155140163166416_9197750553950111847_n.jpg

Once in the lounge, we were each provided with a complimentary alcoholic beverage of our choice: I should note that these were different from the drinks that were included with the meal (more choice/greater selection). I let Steve chat up the bartender and surprise me with whatever he thought I’d like while I went to snag us a small table and stools. After a very loud and animated discussion with the bar staff, he came over to me with these:

14591616_10155140163301416_4333481505211222354_n.jpg

While it had taken a half hour plus in line last night for two drinks, Capone’s had us rehydrating in under 5 minutes flat (with half of that time a product of the gangster-style banter in which Steve was happy to participate). We were already off to a WAY better start :thumbsup2.

I’m still not sure what they were, but they were both strong and quite tasty. Not much of a drinker, I sipped mine very slowly, otherwise I’d be sound asleep on the floor in short order  (yes, I'm a bit of a lightweight when it comes to alcohol....but I suppose none of you are surprised by that). Once past the bar, there was a small buffet assortment of hot appetizers and snacks for VIP guests to enjoy at their leisure: offerings included crispy onion rings, pepperoni pizza, nachos and cheese, French fries and fresh popcorn. The onion rings were particularly good, but we resisted the urge to fill up on the appetizers before the Italian feast which awaited us.

Just down from the area where the appetizers were being offered, they had a roulette table and a Blackjack table, each staffed by a very engaging gangster. Never having gambled a day in my life, I had vowed before I ever arrived that today wouldn’t be the day I started: but that was before I met Snaps :).

14573003_10155140166071416_1925848186395767804_n.jpg

Snaps beckoned us over, placed some free chips in our hands, and directed us to place our bets. Identifying the blank look on my face, he paused long enough to explain the concept of the game and then gruffly told me he’d give me my first turn with no risk: I lose, he gives me back my chips and I can give it another try. I win, he gives me whatever chips I win and I keep playing. What the heck…..when in Rome, right? :o

Well, it turns out this girl was having a bit of a lucky run that night, which led to Snaps exclaiming loudly “Holy Crap Canada!” [my gangster-given nickname of the night] … “I thought you said you’d never played this before?!?”. While I narrowly missed winning the signature Capone’s t-shirt (which was awarded to the roulette player who had the most amount of chips in hand when it came time to be seated for dinner….unfortunately the person who beat me had a significant head start before I made it to the table) my beginners luck impressed the affable Snaps enough that he performed his special card trick, just for me.

14601043_10155140166061416_5200505630159801385_n.jpg

Snaps, along with Vito the bartender (who would later be Vito the super-amazing-incredible wait staff), would be stand-outs throughout the night: Steve and I could not say enough good about those to gents. Not only were they superbly in character, but they had an incredible knack of making us feel like they were looking after us and only us. Even after we retreated from the VIP lounge, they made a point of personally attending to our every need throughout the balance of the evening……even Snaps, who was assigned to a completely different section, rolled through regularly just to make sure we had everything we needed.

The VIP upgrade here was half the price of our VIP upgrade at Pirates, and so far had provided us with a ton more value: while both offered pre-show admission and extras, Capone’s was already blowing Pirates away. The staff, the atmosphere, the food, and the lounge experience at Capone’s was far and away superior to Pirates: add in the fact that the pre-show drinks were free here (versus the $20 we were out of pocket the night prior) *and* the entertainment value of the roulette and Blackjack tables just made the first part of the evening so much fun. It only got better when our last name was called and we were escorted to our table:

14915536_10155140166321416_1342893880725061622_n.jpg

Front and center, and immediately adjacent to the stage :worship:. We had, quite literally, the best seats in the house. How exactly that happened I have no idea [VIP’s were granted preferred seating but this completely exceeded any expectations], but we were going to be close enough to reach out and touch the actors once the show began.

The gangster who seated us took our preferred drink orders (a rum runner for Steve, a vodka and cranberry with a splash of sprite for yours truly), and he assured us that Vito would be down shortly to take over our service for the night. We were invited to partake in the buffet as soon as we were ready, and Steve didn’t even both to sit before beating a path toward the scents of turkey, meatballs and pork tenderloin that were wafting in our direction. Mama Capone had whipped up a massive Italian feast, and we were expected to mangia, mangia!

More of Capone’s is next.

So with all the Steak and Shake and milkshake talk I stopped at Jack in the Box for fries and a milkshake for dinner. Haha.

I thought I'd include Canada on my list since I'm already in the US, because that's where I want to do some more traveling along with New England.

BC - Van Island, Van, Kelowna
Alberta - Edm, Calgary
Ontario - Toronto & Niagra

Some I have only driven across and gotten gas and/or food at, but most I have at least slept in.

And for those road trip warriors-we do have the amusement park with the one of the best Christmas times in all the country at Silver Dollar City (although most call it "steal your dollar city"-complaining about the $92 dollar season pass when most amusement parks are much more than that without the theming!)

Tuesday, October 18th (the conclusion)

14915466_10155140171881416_2047993857072301068_n.jpg

The food at Capone’s was really, REALLY good: not only did they have a full pasta buffet (spaghetti, meatballs, lasagna, etc.) they also offered an amazing carving station (with beef, turkey, and pork) and a nice selection of kid-friendly items and sides: everything from mashed potatoes and fresh salads to chicken nuggets and pizza . Even I, and admittedly selective eater, was overwhelmed by the sheer number of Italian comfort foods available, which meant I had to be selective on which items I chose to eat. There was NO WAY my stomach was going to handle sampling a little bit of everything I liked. As a VIP guest, we were first to the buffet so everything was piping hot with each tray full to the brim. The chefs at the carving station were equally as charming as the servers in the lounge and dining area, and it was very uplifting to see every worker, from greeters to the kitchen staff, wholeheartedly enjoying their jobs.

We all had a good opportunity to visit the buffet before the show started, though people were still welcome to partake of more food during that initial part of the entertainment. Vito magically appeared on a regular basis to refill our beverages, though I eventually had to redirect him to replace my vodka and cranberry with something a little softer…….after my third drink, I was totally feeling the effects (I don’t generally partake in alcohol, remember) and though Vito was gutted at my decision (“Are you okay? Are you sick? I can make them weaker for you if you want!”) I had a Coke Zero in place before I could even say “prohibition”. For those who are wondering, included beverages were rum runners, vodka and cranberry, rum and Coke, beer, and assorted wines. They also offered a pretty wide selection of non-alcoholic drinks [soft drinks, coffee, tea, cranberry juice, iced tea, and fruit punch] for those who were driving, or who otherwise wished to steer clear of the booze. A cash bar was also available for those who wanted alcoholic beverage that were not part of the complimentary choices :drinking1.

The show itself was a high-energy production that combined singing, dancing, and comedy. Our first introduction to the cast featured the elegant Miss Jewel, in red, who kept everyone in line throughout the night and the ditsy-but-loveable Bunny-June Hinkleman, a budding stage star and the newlywed of Fingers Salvatorio.

14925222_10155140169836416_667462587598926509_n.jpg

The performers all came down through the audience, singing and dancing and chatting their way between the tables, making several guests part of the show throughout the night. We love that kind of audience participation….it goes a long way in making every show unique. Not surprisingly, Steve was under the spotlight before the end of the first number as Miss Jewel singled him out and crooned one of her songs especially for him. He swears it’s the bald head that gets him all the attention . I’m sure our proximity to the stage also helped .

14632992_10155140170226416_8467442431825640677_n.jpg

I have to give a shout out to our fabulous seatmates as well….we were fortunate to be located alongside some really FUN folks (retirees John and Diana, and a lovely young couple…..who I forget their names (whoops!)…..who were on their honeymoon) . John had enjoyed a good laugh at Steve’s expense when Miss Jewel gave him some one-on-one attention, so it was great payback when he was pulled from his chair and found himself onstage, front and center, wearing a feather boa:

14633051_10155140170551416_6556427852171781831_n.jpg

Everyone is part of the show at Capones: even the servers, who took to the stage at various points in the night to sing, dance and make us all laugh. That’s Snaps in the bottom left and Vito to the bottom right.

14908231_10155140170526416_536560331458567285_n.jpg

Vito even found himself with Bunny-June perched on his lap at one point……he’d better watch out for Fingers. He might not take well to his new bride making herself so comfortable! ;)

14641900_10155140170776416_4115158168046923018_n.jpg

There was no end to the fun and the laughs (or the alcohol) as the show rolled on. The actors rotated in and out, the costumes changed, but the storyline was seamless and the night just seemed to fly by. I won’t give away the storyline (it has apparently changed as of March 2017 to an all-new show, however in case they keep some of the components of the old show, I won’t be the spoiler for anyone who decides to go) but the performers carried it off perfectly. Fingers Salvatorio, in particular, was a stand-out: this one guy was nothing short of stage brilliance :worship:.

14915692_10155140171366416_1366570145018711442_n.jpg

Steve was about 12 rum runners in when Miss Jewel decided he needed to join her on stage to be her dance partner. I won’t lie: I had a little flutter of panic inside, because she was pretty tiny and Steve was almost 300 pounds…..and he had consumed enough alcohol since the night began to make him less than sure-footed by this point in the night . If he happened to stumble, Miss Jewel could be a dead woman. Apparently all my worries were for naught, though, as even being three sheets to the wind, my Steve cut a rug like a professional dancer :dancer:.

14907583_10155140172106416_8535027620513079707_n.jpg

The other highlight of the night was when Steve noticed that Fingers’ fly was down……and after pondering if it was part of the act (eventually enough time passed that we realized it wasn’t), during an informal part of the show, Steve ….. from his stage-side seat ….. very calmly tossed out “Hey Fingers, your barn door is open”. The fellow that played Fingers didn’t miss a beat, promptly zipped his fly, and expertly wove that little faux pas into the balance of the night’s entertainment :rotfl2:. I have to hand it to the whole cast, in fact: they seemed to have an incredible ability to take whatever came up and just keep on rolling as if it were perfectly planned. Even with the unscripted interaction with the audience, their quick replies were perfectly timed and hilariously appropriate. True professionals in every sense.

Dessert was plated and delivered to all guests about 2/3 of the way into the night. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate icing that was really, REALLY good: a fairly small portion, thankfully, which was a god-send after unlimited hot appetizers, followed by such a heavy meal and so many drinks. Coffee and tea was also offered to those who wished a hot beverage with their sweet ending to the meal. Also during this time, the photos which were taken on entry were delivered to each table with the option (and no pressure) to purchase. They had several different choices depending on your interest and budget, but we ended up buying the full package (newspaper, 5 x 7 mug shot photo with arrest report, and two Capone’s key chains) for about $30.

14570232_10155140179091416_3667311316615142704_n.jpg

It was the newspaper that did it for us: what a unique souvenir of such an incredible night. After we moved to Michigan, I was able to special order a frame to accommodate the unusual dimensions of the newspaper and it now holds a place of honour in our entryway. I am sure it will end up being a great conversation piece……..when I actually meet some people here and start having guests over :rolleyes1.

The grande finale…… “A Salute to Fruit” ….. was side-splittingly funny and was one of the highlights of the night. Fingers Salvatorio…..now sporting fake breasts, a pink bikini top, and a fruit bowl-inspired head piece……even found his way over to Steve, and shook his (ahem!) “pineapples” just for him :lmao:. As he so succinctly stated “I owe ya one for earlier, Table 19”.

14573000_10155140178276416_2705920450874700378_n.jpg

After the show, everyone had the opportunity to chat with the cast and get photos with each of the performers (either singly or as a group). This night had exceeded our expectation so much, we both felt the need to personally thank the wonderful cast members for their part in delivering a memorable evening of superb entertainment. Vito quickly appeared and offered to take pictures with our camera so we’d both be in one together, and I was so grateful for his attentiveness and kindness….even once the show had concluded.

14907017_10155140178291416_4976352940348601578_n.jpg

A card on the table noted a suggested tip for the servers, but we left considerably more than the recommended amount: it was well earned and more than justified.

After offering a big thanks and a hug to both Vito and Snaps, we summoned our Uber ride and made our way to the parking lot. Once again, our car arrived within minutes (8, to be exact) and we were on our way back to Cypress Palms. We patted ourselves on the back for the great idea to give Uber a try: aside from the decision to visit Capones, it was our second-best decision of the night. Seeing the packed parking lot upon arrival just cemented our delight.

Overall thoughts: this dinner show is a hidden gem. Fantastic food, hilarious entertainment, great drinks, and incredible staff. For the price, I don’t think it can be beat by anything else in the general area. It was the surprise hit of our vacation and probably one of the things we have talked, and laughed, about most. Several people brought children to the show (and they are completely welcome, though infants are not permitted in the VIP sections) but I wouldn’t think that most under-12’s would get much from the show. While it was not what I’d call “adult humour” (as in stuff you wouldn’t want your child hearing at all), the jokes and content held an air of suggestivity that meant most of the truly comedic moments would go over a child’s head. The Outta Control or Hoop Dee Doo dinner shows are better fits, in our humble opinion, for families with young kiddos along for the fun. For older families or adult couples, however, Capone’s is where it’s at. We liked it so much, we returned two months later for their holiday show…..and can see ourselves repeating the experience on every trip.

14606390_10155140177956416_3519757302535555555_n.jpg

I still can’t set the table for dinner, though, without wanting to tell Steve…..fork you! :rotfl:

Coming up: the inlaws arrive for their first visit to Florida! And chaos ensues LOL. The good kind, of course ;).

But a lot of mine was from moving to from NC from WA and driving to a funeral in MI from WA. Plus living in CA, WA and NC made a difference with some of it.

We stopped at Mt Rushmore on the way back from NC But I wouldn't have made a special trip for it. So without the drives the middle would still be mostly fly over.

Don't think of it that way. Think of it as a totally self-serving ploy on all our parts to tempt you into further travels so we can all come along for the ride!

I was going to say look at it as a challenge now that you are in the lower 48 of the US!

Capone looks like a great dinner show, we tried Uber for the first time in October in Florida and it was a great service. Nice to see it was a better overall experience than the Pirate dinner show. That is funny about your hubby over indulging and going up to dance lol! You have to take advantage of the included drinks!

Lesson to all....pick up your own bags at the airport. Our flight landed at 7:20pm and our bags were brought to our room at 2am. I called to find out where they were at 10:30 and again at 12:30. At 12:30 the CM said they had just scanned 10 minutes prior as being on the truck. Never again will I use the luggage service unless I'm arriving prior to 3pm.

I figure I'll add some of the southern states when we're retired. Places like the Carolinas and Georgia will be easy to get to when we're living in Florida ;). Hey, a girl can dream.....right? :teeth:

Yes, true......ya'll have been good motivation for sure. But, neither one of us are fan of lengthy road trips, so I fear our list will never be as extensive as the ones that have posted here. But.....you never know! Ask me a year ago if I'd be living stateside in 2017 and I'd have laughed at the notion. I am rapidly learning to never say never.

Our son and his girlfriend plan to use Uber almost exclusively when they visit in September. Being under 25, it was a much better option for them than renting a vehicle with a huge age surcharge. I hope they have the same great experiences we both have.

Crappy way to start a trip after a long day of travel. I hope you managed some good sleep once you finally got your bags. We are all patiently waiting for pool pics! :beach:

Looks like you had a blast at Capones, and the VIP experience seems well worth the money.

It was a great time and a great value. Totally recommend it!

Wednesday, October 18th

Steve’s younger brother, his wife, and their three children had actually landed in Orlando the evening prior while we were at Capones, picked up their rental van, and drove to Cypress Palms. The kids were all pretty wound up after the long drive to Buffalo followed by their first time on an airplane, so they let them loose in one of the pools before tucking them in for the night. We knew that they had had a bit of a rough arrival experience (one of their car seats emerged completely mangled…..I have no idea what happened to it, but it truly looked as if it had been run over by the airplane at some point :headache:) so they ended up filing a claim with Southwest, who cut them a cheque for a new seat, before leaving MCO. We could tell they were a bit frazzled from the day’s events, so we walked over to their villa and spent an hour or two with them after Capone’s: since their kids needed to hit the sack, they were grateful that we could visit with them at their villa rather than them have to come to us. It ended up being a VERY late night (rather, make that an early morning!) so we started off Wednesday…..which we had expertly scheduled to be a “down day”, anticipating that their young family might need a day to settle in…..with a relaxing morning of sleeping late :faint:.

Okay, maybe “late” is a stretch . But, we lounged around and knew that Joe, Lisa and their three kiddos could do the same (though with a 4, 5 and 9 year old…..each excited to be on vacation in the USA….sleeping in for them, we knew, would be an unlikely event as well).

Around mid-morning, Steve and I strolled over to their villa…..they were about 4 buildings away, in what appeared to be the only villa in their building that wasn’t under renovation :confused3…...and were greeted with shrieks of delight and hugs from the nieces and nephew. Joe looked shell-shocked (the kids were VERY excited and Daddy was very over-tired) and Lisa was continuing to work on bringing order to the room, as they hadn’t done much organizing when they arrived late the night before. When everyone was ready, we offered to take them a tour around the resort so they could get acquainted with some of the facilities that the kids might enjoy while they were there. Since it had been dark when they pulled into the parking lot, they hadn’t yet seen the Activity Center, the second pool, or even the playground. It was a spectacular, warm, sunshiny morning so it was perfect for enjoying a walk in the great outdoors :sunny:. The kids were thrilled to be wearing shorts and flip flops in October :p.

These are the girls: Cadence (age 9), and Alaina (age 4). They were very excited that they had red sunglasses, just like their Aunt :cool2:.

Johan is the only boy, and in the middle at age 5. There is actually only 11 months between he and Alaina, so those two are more like twins than single siblings. He was eager to show us that his muscles were nearly as big as his Uncle Steve’s, now that he’s five years old .

Lisa asked if we would be interested in going shopping with them after lunch, noting that they needed to purchase a new car seat for Johan since his was mangled by the airline on the journey here. We happily agreed, and let them choose where they wanted to dine, knowing they would be better at picking somewhere their kids would like better than we would. They were all excited to give Chili’s a try, and even happier that it was within walking distance to the resort: the less they needed to load and unload their family of five in and out of the van, the better. Let those wee ones walk off some of their exited energy and breathe in that wonderful fresh air along the way.

There was no wait and lots of open tables when we arrived, which we were all grateful about. Delays to be seated are much tougher when you have hungry kids in tow. Our server found us a large table that gave us an abundance of space and had colouring pages and crayons in front of the little ones in short order.

Let’s just say lunch was a lively affair :rotfl2:. Now that we’re empty nesters, we’ve grown rather accustomed to our quiet mealtimes…..and there was a LOT of excited chatter in our little corner of Chili’s :hyper:. It was fun, though, to see and feel their genuine enthusiasm and delight: we had a feeling that every park, every meal, every experience was going to be a huge adventure while they were in town.

Lunch itself was great (as always) and a superb value to boot. Steve had some sort of Cajun chicke salad (he was eating lighter since we had a more substantial dinner in the plans):

….while I had chicken tenders and fries. I love Chili’s chicken tenders, and I figured they would be easy to share with the kids if I couldn’t eat the full serving (and I was right! :thumbsup2).

Alaina had pizza, and declared it the best she’d ever eaten. Even though she’s the smallest of them all, her lunch disappeared faster than the other two put together.

After lunch, we walked back to the resort to freshen up (at least three of us had managed to slop, spill or drip something on our shirts during lunch) and then we all piled into Joe and Lisa’s rental van and headed first toward the Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores. We decided to visit the outlet mall first, as Joe and Lisa wanted to pick up groceries and supplies at Target (along with the new car seat) and it made sense to do that last so the perishables could be brought directly back to the resort for refrigeration. Each of the kids had some money that they had saved to spend on souvenirs, and Lisa hoped that the Disney outlet might provide them with some good value items.

After combing through the Disney outlet as a group, Steve and I took the kiddos on tour while Joe and Lisa enjoyed some child-free opportunities to shop. They were so grateful and appreciative of that rare indulgence, and the kids were thrilled to be hanging off Aunt Gina and Uncle Steve while they chattered and gabbed our ears off. We took them to the Lindt outlet and bought them all some chocolate treats (that’s what aunts and uncles are for, right?) and eventually we wound our way over to the playground to pass the remainder of the time until their mom and dad were ready to roll.

Next stop was the Super Target on the 192.

Remember what I said about the kids finding joy in the little things? As we hopped out of the van and headed toward the store entrance, they whooped with glee at the Target ball and shrieked “Aunt Gina! You have to get our pictures!”. Of course, I was happy to oblige :goodvibes.

(Ah, older sisters…..aren’t they just a delight? ;))

Once inside the store, the guys and I took the kids and went on the hunt for a replacement car seat while Lisa started on shopping for the groceries that they would need for their villa. They anticipated cooking several of their meals at the resort and for a family of five, that takes a good amount of food to achieve. We easily found a good quality car seat within the amount of the claim cheque that was issued by Southwest, so that alleviated a lot of stress right off the bat. With the car seat in the cart, we toured the toy aisle with the kids (looking most specifically for some things that might be fun to use in the resort pools) and then tracked down their momma who was pretty much ready to check out.

Heading back to the resort, Steve and I headed back to our villa for a short respite of quiet time (I swear our ears were ringing by that point LOL) and then we all met up for a swim at Pool 1 :beach:.

Next: Uncle Steve and Aunt Gina escape for an adults-only dinner at a new-to-us restaurant on International Drive. Would we be able to survive the quiet? :rotfl:

oh my are those kiddos CUTE! It is soooo much fun to be able to see things from their perspective isn't it? My kids still love to vacation with us but they don't always have the same excitement!
And I would never have been able to tell that was Steve's brother if you hadn't said so :rotfl: same smile, same way of standing, nope can't tell at all:)

And here's the fun part .... Joe is one half of a set of twins. Joe and his twin look different enough that if you met them on the street, you would likely not even realize they were related, let alone twin brothers.

Steve and Joe, on the other hand, look like clones (and act like them, too). Oddly enough, though, they don't share the same biological father...so they're only technically half-brothers (despite the crazy resemblance, both in looks and personality).

Things that make you go hmmmmmmm :scratchin.

That is nuts!! Seriously they stand the same way (at least in the picture you posted) and same facial expressions in the pics! Sounds like they were meant to be brothers no matter what?
