It would be hard to believe if you saw me "live" but I rarely, if ever, eat dessert. Is there any way I can have an app instead of dessert on the DDP?

I believe it's at the restaurant's discretion, but, yes. I have ordered an appetizer instead of dessert. Have also ordered two appetizers instead of an entree.

I've also made the suggestion to the good folks @WDW several times that the definition for table service meal should be entree and dessert *or* appetizer. I am told they are considering that. Might be even more likely if they hear that feedback from lots of people--hint, hint.

If you are on the dp, most restaurants will NOT allow an appy subbed for dessert.I know that they are pretty strict with this. They will sometimes prepare sugar free desserts or fruit, but no appetizers in lieu of dessert

I haven't seen any reports from people on the 2008 dining plan who have been able to do this. If it has happened, it's been an extremely rare occurence.

I would even take a slight upcharge if I could sub dessert for appetizer. You can always try, but I doubt if you will be able to do it. I would love to hear from those who are able to do this and where they ate at Disney on the plan recently for it.

I will say I've substituted a drink or shake at some places for dessert. Of course, Disney is ahead on that deal. I'll take the extra drink to go. Some places may not have a drink to go.

I try to stick with a healthier dessert. Also, you can take a dessert to go and have a snack later with it.

This reference by an earlier poster

is the only reference I have seen this year of anyone being able to get an appetizer in place of dessert. And that poster does not mention whether or not they were able to do it this year. In 2008 it's been reported that such substitutions are not allowed under any circumstances (even medical ones).

Some of the signature restaurants have a cheese selection that may be ordered as a dessert.

You can get the deluxe plan (which includes appetizers), eat at buffets and family style meals, and book the Fantasmic dining package at the Studios at either Mama Melrose or Brown Derby; all of these options include appetizers. Of course all of this includes desserts, too.

Not in 2008. A Cast Member who attempts to get around this restriction is subject to discipline, up to job loss - and none of us wants to cause that, do we? :(

Buffet restaurants will give you all the appetizers you want, and you could totally skip the desserts.

Or you could buy an appetizer OOP and give your dessert to another member of your party who has a sweet tooth.

Or you could check for fruit or cheese options, as others have suggested.

Or...you might want to seriously crunch the numbers and see if the dining plan is even worth it for you :confused3 Part of the "value" is that desserts are included at CS and TS meals. A lot of the CS desserts I could take or leave, but I'm almost always up for dessert at a TS restaurant when I'm on vacation. :goodvibes

It's not likely you will be able to get an appetizer instead of dessert. I wish you could as I don't usually eat dessert everyday, nor does anyone in my family. We don't even want one of the more expensive appetizers, we'd all be happy just with plain garden salads. I keep hoping Disney will change this and give the option to choose.

Keep in mind Disney's "contract" with those of us on the DP is for an entree, dessert and beverage on the plan. There is no obligation for them to allow for an appetizer in exchange for a dessert. You are always free to decline a feature of the plan, but Disney really doesn't have to offer substitutions as such.

I am a vegetarian (35yrs) and have done a lot of declining over the years. Sometimes we've gotten substitutions or a price break, but not always. I've taken the stance that it is my choice to eat this way and my responsibility to feed me. With that in mind I've either avoided certain places or events, lived with the options or simply eaten before or after an event.

If you really don't "value" dessert then do your DP "worth" calc assuming no dessert. If its that big a deal don't do the plan and pay for your meals OOP. That way you'll be sure to get appetizers when you want and won't feel like you have to eat desserts because you paid for them.
