My Fil didn't like me at all. I don't drink and he was an alcoholic who thought everyone should drink even my kids when they were babies. I ended up not having anything to do with him for many years. He was sick for many years so I never put anything in my dh's way when he wanted to go and see him. The last year of his life I did go to see him a couple of times. It was a shame because he never knew his dgrkids or his great dgdd's. My DMIL lives across the country now with her dh. Sometimes she is good with me and sometimes not. I go with the flow. I hate to say it but my dh is a good person but is a wimp when it comes to confronting someone. I don't have to deal with her very much so I can be nice and enjoy her when I do see her or talk to her. Now I have 2 dsil's. I try very hard not to interfer with the decisions my 2 dd's and their dh's make. Sometimes it drives me nuts, but it is their decisions not mine. I enjoy all their company when they come and will often bring the dsil's little presents when I go to their works, (one works at the car dealership where I get my car fixed and the other at a local restaruant) like coffee and donuts. I want them to want to come and see me not have to come and see me. I have 3 wonderful dgrdd's and just adore each one for who they are and give their parents credit for the job they are doing raising them. Positive is better than negative.
