Does your job allow you to vacation anywhere?

My employer says Travel is our personal choice and if we come back from one of the states NY has listed as a quarantine upon return, then I have to work from home for 14 days. I am not even back in the office since March and have been wfh anyway. Not even sure when our offices will all open up.

They don't tell you that you can't go to any certain place. However, you will not be allowed back for 14 days after you return. You may be able to work from home for those 14 days. There are also options of using PTO for those days, or taking the time off without pay.

I’m in MA too. The quarantine says that all travelers, including MA residents are “instructed” to self quarantine for 14 days after traveling to another state.....unless it is from ME, NH, CT, RI, VT, NY and N.J. They are not following up on this, however, but leaving it up to individuals to comply. Private companies have their own policies.

The OP works for the state...which they didn’t clarify in their first post, which is what I believe led to some confusion.

We live in NY which has a state mandated quarantine period after visiting most states. I'm able to work from home, but DH's employer is complying with and enforcing whatever the state mandate in effect is.

Am I the only one who doesn't tell my job where I'm going on vacation? I mean, it's really no one else's business.
No co-workers that you chat with? No friendly personal conversations with your boss? I don't list a reason when I request PTO, but through normal conversation, it usually comes up where I'm going. Or someone will notice I'm off or have been off for a week or two and will ask if I went away somewhere. Or they notice I come back to work with a tan. Its all just friendly chatter, no one being nosey. I can understand not sharing the details if there's a reason you don't want your employer to know, but I don't think its that peculiar to share it with people we spend so much time with.

ETA: I also like to make my boss aware when I'm on vacationing or traveling out of town so that she doesn't call me with questions or anything like that. I don't vacation with my work laptop.

My employer, since March, requires a travel form to be completed online before going anywhere out of state. I don't know if they require any quarantining, however, except from out of the country. Our state just instituted some self-quarantine rules, depending on the state traveled to, but I don't recall what states are on the list yet.

The state has hired tracers. If the person is suspected they will call everyone they can to simply ask. Like sickness police lol
My husband works for DOD. On a large navy base.
Dunno who does it, the bade, government, a little birdy, but they track using online sources. Someone tags you on Facebook, Twitter or whatever platform. They have been known to use geo tags on ur pictures and posts.
To my knowledge only one person lied.
They were put into quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to VA.

Curious. How would your employer know where you went? I’ve wondered this about all the states that are mandating 14 day quarantine post travel. How do “they” know where you traveled to?

lol. I’m not paranoid, I don’t think we are being tracked. But I think this is something that people are being expected to self report. And I don’t trust that everyone is going to honor these mandates.

BUT it is a requirement for NONE NON-state employees to also quarantine when returning from out of state?

In MA, all the electronic road signs were stating the 14 day quarantine rules for out of state travelers. Now they direct you to look at the state gov't website as well.

It's the business's business (that looks weird, LOL) if you come back with COVID and infect the whole office and they lose money. They can also fire you if they have a policy set in place and you ignore it. Is it worth the risk of your job (and other people's health and welfare) to break work policy? BTW, that wouldn't go with your online name at all :)

Well, at my workplace they have made department managers responsible for their direct reports. It’s now my job to ensure the compliance of my staff members but of course when it comes to travel it all depends on their honest self-reporting and it has been made extremely clear to everyone from our national executives on down to the janitors that non-compliance with any part of our Covid protocols is grounds for immediate termination.

Wait wait wait! Are you saying that contact tracing is not just asking an ill person who they’ve been around and where have the traveled? But that the contact tracers are stalking people? That’s creepy actually.

All this time, I thought we were taking people’s word for it and self reporting.

For example, I took a vacation in early June. We rented a cabin and we practiced social distancing. I did not post anything about it on Facebook. However, because I am posting it here, could a contact tracer find this post and fine me for it....(Assuming travel restrictions were in place at the time, which they weren’t, buy I’m being hypothetical)

I didn’t post on social media because I didn’t want my mother to know. Lol. I’m 50 years old and I’m still sneaking around behind my mom’s back.

im pretty sure CA banned all non-essential travel. At least, that’s what our government employer has told all of us.
Not exactly. Hotels and lodging are open for leisure travel in California. In my area people are screaming to close to tourism. My county specifies leisure travel up to 50 miles (straight line on a map) for leisure is okay.

Our office is working remotely, but you can come in to the office by a pre-arranged schedule - no more than 25% of our staff at a time. However, if you travel anywhere by plane, train or bus, you need to self-quarantine for 14 days. So far, we don't have regional restrictions yet.

Not my job, no. The governor of my state calls the shots.
Our governor in PA takes the easy way with all things covid. He "recommends" quarantine when returning from a hot state, but also allows employers to do what they want with regard to enforcing/follow up with quarantine.

Straight from our state's FAQ:
How should businesses implement these recommendations? Can employers require employees returning from listed states to stay out of work for 14 days?
The Commonwealth does not dictate how businesses should implement the quarantine recommendation. However, DOH recommends implementing businesses review the eligibility criteria in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and provide flexible leave and work from home policies to accommodate the recommendation.
And:
My employer has required me to quarantine, but I am unable to work from home. Am I entitled to sick leave while I am in quarantine?
Employees should work with their employers about leave and pay issues related to COVID quarantine absences. An individual may want to also review the paid leave eligibility provided for in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. Individuals should contact their employer prior to making any decisions related to their employment.

We live close to NY, my hubby's employer is based in NY and we got a letter on July 1 informing us that "Consistent with these guidelines, we are now requiring all colleagues based out of our New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania locations who return from the states listed above to self-quarantine for 14 days, effective immediately. "

And yes, everyone is instructed to discuss their travel plans with HR before and after a trip.

In the letter, they also outlined that the employee, if they choose to travel to a state on the list and the mandatory 14 day quarantine, will either work remotely, if possible, or use up remaining vacation/sick/personal time for pay. When that is exhausted, they will not receive any pay during the remainder of the quarantine. Now think about that in regard to how many times we may have to quarantine due to exposure? Even though we "can" technically travel to one of those states, would we want to and use up all remaining vacation, sick and personal time? We've been exposed a few times and hubby had to quarantine and fought with his company to get paid for some of that leave since he was exposed at work.

And again, because our governor is a joke and won't enforce quarantine like NY, NJ and CT, all the employers of my immediate family have informed their employees that they will follow the government's "recommendation" as mandatory for returning to work.

They can't tell you that you can't travel, they only say you must quarantine for 14 days before returning to work.

PA has been following what NY, NJ, and CT are doing with regard to which states are on the hot list. So far, they haven't caught up with the newest states on the tri state list from this week, but I would think it's a strong possibility they will, given our proximity to NY and NJ. The tri states just added Virginia to the list and one of my dd's is there right now so we're watching what PA does this week and if she will have to mandatory quarantine when she gets back. Not by the state's "mandate", which is only a "recommendation"; but with her employer's mandate.

No restrictions from my employer as we are 100% WFH right now. I can go work anywhere in the US, go vacation anywhere in the world, or just stay home.

My husbands company has said if you planned a vacation prior to covid, to one of the states the governor has designated as requiring quarantine, they will work with you to allow you to work from home until you complete quarantine. If you planned one after Covid, you will be required to use additional vacation or unpaid leave to complete quarantine. I believe there is also a provision allowing for testing after a certain number of days but we just cancelled our vacation plans even though they were planned precovid. It’s just not worth it.
I work for a small firm and can work from home at will so quarantine would not impact me too much

I personally do not understand anyone planning a "vacation" for the next month or so. And on top of that planning on going to one of the states that is very obviously not doing well. And on top of that being surprised that they are asked to quarantine after coming back from a hot spot.

I have not been given anything from my job stating i must quarantine if I go to certain states.
