No, my neighborhood was built post WWII and was promoted as cheap housing for the returning men & women. They were built on slab on a assembly line type method and were very small.

You must live in my old neighborhood town!

Our new house has both a basement and a crawl space.

I grew up in a house with a basement. Loved, LOVED, LOVED it. When it rained we could go down there and roller skate, ride bikes, anything we did outside.

DH grew up in a house without a basement and when we went bought our first house refused to look at houses that had basements because everyone knows they all leak and get water. Well, after seeing that my parents' basement never leaked or got flooded, when we bought the new house, one of his requirements was that it had a basement.

Shame that our kids are grown and never got to "enjoy" rainy days in the basement.

Yep. I dont know anyone who doesn't have one. ours is semi finished. I'd love to finish it one day but that is just a dream for now :cloud9:

I would say in the Chicago area, it's more likely to have one that not to. Houses on a slab can be very difficult to sell.

Pretty much everyone up here has one even the people who live in igloos;)

We have a finished basement with a bathroom. It's great to send the kids down there when we have people over:thumbsup2

I grew up in Massachusetts and I don't think I ever knew of a home without one. In North Carolina, I only know 1 person with a basement. They're pretty rare around here. When we were looking for a new house the few basements we saw were moldy smelling. I assumed that because so few people have basements that the builder aren't experienced enough to do them properly.

We have a basement and our family room is down there. We also have a daylight basement with big windows above ground, but not a walkout. I love it. We had it finished 2 years ago and it was well worth it.

I have a basement. We would not buy one without it. I am surprised at the number of homes in areas without water table problems that do no have basements.

yes and until this storm came and is flooding my basement I used to like having one LOL!

Add me to that list too.

We are deciding on ripping out the carpet this time since it is that bad. Stinks for us since we have to pay as we are not in a flood area per insurance (or something like that).

We have a basement. It has windows and we added a door to walk out from. We finished off half of it and my brother lives in that area. My mom used to have to go down the basement because that's where the laundry room was. Thankfully she added a laundry room on our main floor.

I would say they are more common than not around here (Cincinnati, Ohio area). Though I have seen houses without basements.

Here in Massachusetts we have a basement finished w/ movie room, extra bath, tool room etc.

Our home in South Carolina does not have a basement.

I was always under the impression that homes at least in the North here for the most part have basements (unless its a "slab") and that houses down south didn't have basements for the most part.

No but there is about 4' under the house (DH calls it a crawl space) and our hot water heater is down there.

I would guess that 99 per cent of the homes in our area have basements.

Yes, we have a finished basement - my DH calls it "The Bunker".

Most midwest houses have basements..

I never lived in a house w/o a basement till I stayed at my DD's in Texas and Florida. It was strange to be w/o a basement.

herc.

I am not sure why the homes in TX don't have basements but in FL the water table is too high in much of the state. I could see the problem being the reason near the coats but TX is a pretty big state and I am not sure why the inland areas wouldn't have basements.

I have one
What the builders call a "daylight" basement, The house is built on a hill and half of the basement faces out and has widows and sunlight and the other half is underground.
They are not rare here in GA -but more houses don't have them than do.

Same here, live in Ga have a daylight basement. I think they're pretty common in this area b/c the land is rarely flat. It's where out home theater is, we can get it really dark in there even during the day.
