We have a finished basement and love it! We looked at so many houses when we moved to Kansas, and every one of them had a basement. Most were finished basements.

Here in tornado alley, I think everyone has a basement. When we lived in California, basements were very rare.

We don't have a basement but we do have a crawlspace, our funace is under there. Most homes in our area have basements. Ours is unusal.

Yep! We have a walkout...leads to the patio out back. We have it finished - it's our family room, computer room, and kids play room. and that's where our laundry room is, too. It's all actually one big room, but sectioned off by furniture (well, except the laundry - that is it's own room)

I would hate to not have a basement!

We have a basement here in MA. Fortunately it is unfinished because thanks to the lovely storm we are having, it currently has 3 inches of water in it.:sad2:

I live in a condo! No basement, but I have some downstairs neighbors that I am willing to give away for free! :goodvibes

I have one
What the builders call a "daylight" basement, The house is built on a hill and half of the basement faces out and has widows and sunlight and the other half is underground.
They are not rare here in GA -but more houses don't have them than do.

This sounds like what we have--a "walk-out" basement. There's actually a patio outside the basement door. It makes a terrific mancave.:cool2:

A lot of houses in New England have basements. Right now, mine resembles a swimming pool! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: We've had a weekend of torrential downpours and the area is flooding and for a lot of us that means the water is pouring in. Our pump has been running continuously!

That's how ours is. I love it.

If it did it would be an indoor swimming pool - not many basements in Florida. :)

We do! We had ours finished about 5 years ago when DH was pushing for a bigger house and I was fighting to stay where I knew people. It was the perfect compromise and added about 1,000 sq feet of living space onto the house. I love it and call it my 'Fortress of Solitude'. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!

Here in Pa, and even in NY where I'm from, almost everyone has one. In fact, houses without them are hard to find unless you live near water or are in a low price development/area where the contractors are trying to keep costs low. Most 50+ communities around this region don't seem to have them but condos and townhouses do.

Basements are few and far between here in NC. Something to do with the type of soil and lots of rock under the topsoil.

I grew up in Atlanta, and we had what a lot of GA homes have- the daylight basement. Pretty much everyone we know in GA has one.

Our first house was in Birmingham, AL- we didn't have a basement, but it wasn't rare to see mostly older homes that had them. Our second home in Columbus, OH, had an unfinished basement. One side was a regular basement, and one side was a crawlspace. Most homes had full basements, and most were at least partly finished.

Houses here don't have basements, but I SO wish they did! I would love to have one, we could use all the extra space.

Unfortunately, yes. Until this year, it flooded every spring when the snow melted. I had a broken footer drain and since it was fixed the basement's dry again. Now I have to pay someone to replace all the dry wall that we had to remove.

yes our house has a basement. half of it is finished and we plan on turning it into a bar/rec room area for when we have guests over, we can have drinks and watch sports games down there.

the other half is what i call "the scary part of the basement" where it's not finished, it has the washer and dryer, the heater, water tank, etc. (we're very lucky that we don't have a leaking basement tho. a LOT of people around us have leaking basements).

eventually DH and i want to move south and that's the only thing i'll miss about living up north, because most places in the south don't have basements.

No, they give me the creeps. Funny thing is I passed over many homes with basements when I was looking last year and what happens? My house was flooded on the first floor and it WOULD've been my basement IF I had one!! My neighbors had them and believe me, it's much better to have a flooded basement than a flooded bedroom, kitchen, den and living room! :scared1:

Many homes around here do, our development/subdivision is built on concrete slabs. These homes were build after WWII, I believe for GI's coming home and starting families. Other than cost, I don't know if there is a reason we don't have basements here. I kind of miss having one, but I do like having my laundry on the main floor rather than in the basement.
