Does your home have a basement?

They are not common here. A few department stores have them, and some older homes have basement flats, and cities with limited space, such as London, have underground parking.

We do. The vast majority of houses around here have them.
I wouldn't buy a house without one, we have an office, a laundry room, a big playroom and a huuuge storage room. I like having space where the kids can make a big mess and no one who walks in the house has to see it.
And the storage room can not be beat.

ETA: The reason why a basement is an absolute must for us-my husband plays the drums and his drum set is down there where at least the sound is slightly muffled-I don't want a drum set on the main floor of my home-way too loud.

It is much more common to have them here then it is not to. I have one but it is only under half of the house.

Almost no homes where I live have basements (about 25 miles from the ocean). Basements freak me out, except for the ones that have windows and/or a second door to get out. I get this weird "trapped" feeling when I've been in basements with no windows (or those teeny tiny ones) and only one door.

When we were in TX, I missed having a basement so much. Basements are the norm here although you will find slab homes but they are the "cheap homes".

No, my neighborhood was built post WWII and was promoted as cheap housing for the returning men & women. They were built on slab on a assembly line type method and were very small.

What the builders call a "daylight" basement, The house is built on a hill and half of the basement faces out and has widows and sunlight and the other half is underground.
They are not rare here in GA -but more houses don't have them than do.

I have a basement and while I love it most time it gets really damp down there. When we run the fireplace in the winter it is perfect, but in the spring and summer it gets damp and smelly even with the dehumidifier running.

yep, I am in Illinois...tornado territory. Generally, basements turn into junk rooms or teen hang outs. They are valuable square footage, but they can cost a bundle to finish off nicely enough make it feel like the above ground rooms of a house. I am more of a bonus room girl, like being above ground. Matter of fact I call our basement the dungeoun...rarely go there. I force myself to go down into the depths to get luggage if it means I get to go to Florida!

Yes, very uncommon here. We do have a cellar though. They're a must have here in tornado alley.

We live in the midwestern United States and almost everybody has them. We're in tornado alley and would never buy a house without one!

My basement is the teenage hangout and the place we run to when those darn tornado sirens are blowing!

Our current house doesn't have one but it's getting knocked down this week and we are going to build a modular home with a full basement. I cannot wait!! We plan to have a big family room, storage room, and an office. It will be approx 1200 sq ft!

Here in the DC area that would be known as a walk-out basement which is what we have......we have a rambler and our basement has a great big rec room which leads to our backyard, a separate office/bedroom(I use it as my craft studio), and the storage/workroom/laundry area which although it's technically underground does have two windows(one in the workroom and one in the laundry).....I couldn't live in a house without one as long as it was a walk-out version.

I think most homes here have basements. Ours is not very useable, but we would go down there in case of a tornado, but not for much else. DH used to work on his radio controlled airplanes down there. He has a big table, and there is electricity for lights too but it's usually damp and dark down there, not really much good for anything. There are shelves of canning jars, old crocks, old junk, etc. down there.
