Does this sound like the flu? ** UPDATE post #54

I'm sorry to hear about your DD, hope she gets to feeling better real fast. From what I understand, when you have the flu there is NO DOUBT that you have it. Symptoms are severe and you feel like you wanna die. Hope you can figure out what the deal is, but if it's a virus you pretty much treat the symptoms (fever reducer) and wait it out.

Sounds like a back-to-school virus. Between being exposed to everyone else's germs after a summer at home, and likely not getting enough sleep because of transitioning back to an earlier schedule, their little immune systems just get hit really hard that first week.

Hope she feels better soon!

I'll be the dissenting voice that says...it could be the flu? A couple years ago I had a raging fever (103) going on 2 days; zero other symptoms, tylenol wasn't touching it. Went to urgent care and they ran a litany of tests since I wasn't giving them much to go on, everything negative...until my flu swab came back positive. We were all surprised!

Whatever is ailing your DD I hope it's resolved soon!

Update: It's day 5 and she has a fever of 101.2 still. She has a slight cough but sounds dry. Her rash is fading. She had bad sores in her mouth yesterday but she said they are better today (fever blisters?). She also is sensitive to light. She is somewhat normally sensitive to light but it's worse now.

We took her to urgent care on Friday evening and their rapid strep test came up negative and her ears were clear. I am taking her to her doctor today.

Has anyone had a fever this long before? it is scary, even though it is 101 and could be higher, it is still scary that it has gone on this long.

Thank you so much for all of the comments and well wishes. It's her birthday today, too! What a lousy birthday!

It sound like coxsackie, hand foot and mouth, which most people get as kids, but it's awful for adults. My youngest 2 never had it, which worries me.

Hand foot and mouth.

Guys - thanks SO MUCH for your input. You are really truly helping me through this. Do they give antibiotics for Hand, Foot and Mouth? I really hope that is what it is. I want it identified so no intrusive tests have to be run. How do they diagnose this for sure?

:) Thank you so much.

Yes, my neighbour's kid got hand, foot and mouth. http://www.webmd.com/children/tc/hand-foot-and-mouth-disease-topic-overview#1

The link above says it doesn't usually last more than a week, but I remember my neighbour's kid had a fever for longer than that. After awhile he'd wake up in the morning without a fever, only to have it return in the evening. Eventually the sores in his mouth healed and all the other symtoms went away, but the fever lingered. His doctor wasn't concerned, and I'm happy to say the boy is a healthy young man today.

The only treatment was Tylenol.

It sounds like they test by swabbing the throat. This might explain why no one else in the house has gotten it - if it affects mainly young kids. I hope this is what it is!

My DD just had this happen, turned out she had pneumonia. I pushed the doctor's office for a result other than seems like a virus once her fever had been over 101 for 6 days...

Did she have a cough? My dd doesn't really have much of a cough. Just a dry one every once in a while. Did they give antibiotics? How did they diagnose her? Thx!

Not to be alarming, but did they consider meningitis? Your mention of a fever, rash, and sensitivity to light led me to think meningitis first thing.

I hope you figure out what is going on with your DD! What a lousy birthday indeed :( I hope it is just something simple. My DD got hand, foot, and mouth disease last year at age 9. No one else in the family got it from her, and I don't think any of us ever had it before, but they do say it is extremely contagious. My DD got it when a girl in her class had it. That girl's mom sent her back to school the day after she was diagnosed, and she touched my DD's hand (she had blisters on her hand). My DD came down with it in a few days. It was SO miserable! Her mouth sores bugged her for days. She got some on her hands and feet too that were mildly itchy, but nothing like the mouth sores. I can't remember if she had any other symptoms (like fever, congestion, or anything like that), but I think it was mainly just that very sore throat and painful sores. She missed about a week of school. It's a virus, so they can't really do anything for it. They did prescribe her an Rx mouthwash she could rinse with for pain relief, but I don't know if it helped a lot. I read up a lot about hand, foot, and mouth last year, and I do remember reading that they were reporting large outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth in college kids.

I agree with being tested for meningitis too, but hopefully it is not that. Keep us posted, hope she's better soon!

Sorry to hear that the saga is on-going. Seeing the doc is the right thing and you'll both feel better when there's a diagnosis and a light at the end of the tunnel. Tell your DD that the Dis voted & she gets a do-over on her birthday.
