My dd9 came home with a low grade on Wednesday, then Thurs, Fri and Saturday (today) has had a fever between 100 - 103. Took her to urgent care for a strep test and it's negative. She has a very slight cough, not bad, and a fever and feels terrible. Nausea comes and goes but that's it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for any input.

Too bad they did not swab her for the flu. Hard to say really. I lean more toward not a flu virus. Keep an eye on the chest/coughing. Flu can bring on pneumonia PDQ.

I got my flu shot last week.

I know, it was urgent care and they didn't have a flu test there. I hope and pray this fever breaks today but if she is still sick on Monday (already missed two days of school!) I'll take her to her doctor and get a flu test. Luckily she is not coughing much at all. Just low energy and generally miserable, no appetite.

Thanks :)

I would say virus too. Flu is pretty incapacitating. I had it a few years ago and I literally had to crawl from my bed to the bathroom and couldn't even make it to the lounge to watch tv or anything for about 2 weeks. (Get the flu shot every year since, never want to feel like that again).

Hope she gets better soon!

Thanks so much for the input! :) Those dots look like chicken pox at first glance, but they aren't itchy and they are flat.

Sounds like the virus that has been knocking kids out here. Mine had it last week and my DS is still fighting it off but he has respiratory issues and the cough got pretty bad for him.

At least if it was chicken pox and she has been vaccinated, it would likely be a mild case.

I would guess virus or ear infection. My dd tested positive for strep at urgent care last night. Great way to start the school year

I was worried about that and took her to urgent care last night. They checked her ears and for strep and both are clear. I'm with you - she already missed 2 days of 3 this year because of this virus. So far no one else has caught it in our family.

I don't t think it sounds like the flu at all....
And, Flu does hit very quickly and hard...
I wonder if that STREP result was valid???
Does sound like some kind of virus or infection.

It sounds like the virus I had last week/weekend. I had a temp around 100-100.5 and other symptoms that were similar to seasonal allergies--slightly sore throat, headache, congestion, and ears felt sort of itchy inside, if that makes sense.

Could be influenza, the common cold, or any number of bacterial infections, although the latter is supposed to be less common. A test is going to be rare because most of the time the illness is "self-limiting". That's why homeopathy is legal even if it's basically a placebo. It usually gets better through the human body's ability to fight the infection.

Symptoms sounds more like strep than flu. Did they take a swab for culture? I use to work in family practice and the Rapid strep test is notorious for coming up negative and then the culture coming back positive.

Thanks! They did take two, one rapid (negative) and sent the other to the lab. I'm not sure when we'll hear back. She has had this fever for 3 days and is sleeping now. It is so hard to see her like this!

I've seen viruses like this in myself and dd. Not fun!

Hope she's better soon.

I did want to say the flu is already making its rounds in the college an hour away! Theyve already had a big outbreak. This is very early for our area.

Sounds viral. My coworker has what sounds like the exact same thing last week. Hit her slowly, fever, on Tuesday night into Wednesday. She was off work Wednesday/Thursday. She was improving on Friday and came to work. She was better over the weekend.
