Does this sound like the flu? ** UPDATE post #54

Did she have a cough? My dd doesn't really have much of a cough. Just a dry one every once in a while. Did they give antibiotics? How did they diagnose her? Thx!
If that's what it is, no antibiotics needed. It's a virus.

Hope she is better soon! Just keep up the fluids, that's the most important part with a fever. If she's resistant, it's time for popsicle bribery.

We all woke up this morning with something, not sure yet what, but we were all just fine yesterday. Gag, back to school germs!

The Dr. took blood to check for viral vs bacterial. They also gave her an antibiotic in case it's bacterial. And eyedrops because she said it feels like she has an eyelash in her eyes. Here are the possibilities, from best to worst:

- Virus of some sort, maybe foot and mouth
- Pnemonia
- Kawasaki disease
- Meningitis

I have to bring her in tomorrow and if she still looks bad with a fever, we go to the ER for further tests for the above. I am so worried! I pray the antibiotics will make her better and mainly she needs to have a lower fever and her eyes need to clear up. The rash seems like it's better, and the mouth sores don't bother her as much as yesterday.

Thanks, everyone!

Her cough was minimal, and she didn't "sound" congested but after ruling out mono, UTI and strep they did more blood work (found high white blood cell count) and ordered a chest xray and that is how they found it. Gave us antibiotic, had me give her big doses of Mucinex and drink tons of water and after a couple days her headache was better and her fever broke. She is still coughing up junk but it is a ton better than it was. Now she just needs to regain her stamina!

Sounds a lot like my case. The Dr. said one lung sounded a little suspect. The blood work will come back tomorrow but she already started the antibiotics just now.

At 6 days of fever I was insistent we solve the mystery and got the xray done that day. The issue with pneumonia is that the body isn't coughing to move that stuff out, so it lingers and builds. Once the meds started she coughed herself sore (said it was like the worst ab workout ever) in a day and then kept coughing for a week.

Been reading your thread but hadn't commented yet. I hope your daughter is soon better and that it is nothing too serious

She seems to be bouncing back already after her first dose of antibiotics! Her fever is now 100, last I checked. I'm cautiously optimistic!

My HERO: Alexander Fleming
The first antibiotic, penicillin, was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. He noticed that some bacteria he had left in a petri dish had been killed by naturally occurring penicillium mould. Since the discovery of penicillin, many other antibiotics have been discovered or developed.

What sort of infection did they decide she had?

They don't know yet. They took blood and results will come back tomorrow. The dr suspects it might be bacterial so she started the antibiotics now to give her some relief just in case. If it's not they will stop them, I think. She definitely seems better after the first dose, so not sure what to think about that. Coincidence maybe?

Hope your daughter wakes up tomorrow feeling much better. Poor thing isn't feeling well and then had to get her blood drawn. It's so hard when they're sick! It really makes me anxious not to know what exactly is going on.

Sounds like a virus to me. My grandson (age 4) had some sort of virus last week. Stuffy nose, congestion, low fever, felt overall miserable.

She has both a viral AND bacterial infection! She is on antibiotics and yesterday her fever was down to 99. Thank God! Thanks to all of you for your support! So, fever can last 5-6 days and it can still be okay! :)

I really doubt the flu. It comes on fast and strong usually.

Yes, this! Even children are knocked off their feet fast, and usually (in our experiences) have higher fevers and very achy. Many things cause the symptoms she has - just be watchful! Hope she's better soon!
