Does anyone know which auto rental

Actually, there is no "one size fits' all response. It depends on the contract....

So my Hertz contract may allow a spouse as a free driver, but the one you use doesn't. You will just have to check.

Now, National Emerald Aisle, if you use that contract does give that benefit to everyone.

I heard from a few friends that Alamo doesn't, but I read that they do. ????

If you join the Alamo Insiders Club (which Is free) you can add another driver for no cost.

With National Emerald Club there is no charge for additional drivers.

That is really not accurate. Here is what the master agreement of 2/2012 says:

Unless applicable law requires otherwise, the Vehicle may only be driven by you or an Additional Authorized Driver. An "Additional Authorized Driver" is an individual who (i) is a capable and validly licensed driver for the type of Vehicle being rented, (ii) is at least 21 years of age (a young renter fee may apply for drivers under age 25), (iii) has your prior permission to drive the Vehicle, and (iv)
is either a member of your immediate family who permanently resides with you, or a fellow employee who drives the Vehicle for business purposes. You will not allow use of the rental vehicle by any driver in violation of the requirements set forth above. Your immediate family members includes your parent, child, spouse or a domestic partner. In addition to the above, Additional Authorized Drivers who otherwise meet National’s qualifications can be added at the time of rental. The Additional Authorized Drivers and you are referred to collectively in the Agreement as Authorized Driver(s).

Nope, they don't.

We have routinely had trouble finding a company that will allow us to add a spouse, free of charge. Just about the only time it has worked was last Oct when we booked with National..and used dh's company cc. They allow a business associate or spouse to be added free. Our issue is that I have only a debit card, so need him to use his cc to book. But, I do the driving...it's a huge hassle for us.

I only have experience with Alamo and National, and if you belong to the Emerald Club or Alamo Insiders (both free to join), you do get the spouse as additional driver. Also sometimes, you can find codes that will include an additional driver.

I've never had a problem getting a rental which included my spouse as an additional driver. Discounted codes available for COSTCO and AAA members waive the extra driver fee. I don't know if it's still available but the WalMart code also included your spouse. AARP might also include an additional driver, worth checking.
