I am interested but don't know the first thing about where to get them. Is it worth it? How $$$ did you spend, etc.

Thanks!!

we bought ours at best buy. i haven't seen a huge variation in price of comparable units at different stores though. we bought ours almost 2 years ago, so things might have changed as well. we got one of the phillips tivos towards the mid range of storage space and i think it was around $200-300 for the tivo. then you can pay for a lifetime service (which is actually only the lifetime of the unit) or month to month. we pay month to month and i think it is around $10/month. we chose to do month to month b/c one of our friends bought the lifetime and his machine broke from a power surge 3 months after buying it and then he was out his "lifetime" fee.

for us, it is DEFINATELY worth it. we don't schedule our lives around our favorite shows anymore. if i have to stay late at work, dh has class late, i want to go work out, i want to watch a movie on hbo but don't want to watch it at the time it's aired....we just set the tivo. it is way easier than setting our vcr, and you can "season pass" things so you don't forget. for example, we have west wing season passed and it records every episode of it without us having to program it each time.

and then there is the bonus of intant replays in sports and fast forwarding through commercials!

one of the other fun things to do is set a season pass for something in syndication that airs every day. you can usually watch several seasons worth in a month. LOL

i am tivo's biggest fan! :)

I received my TiVo two Christmases ago as a gift, and I absolutely LOVE it. I don't think I could do without it now that I've tried it. It is absolutely worth the cost, and it's very easy to use. I believe that mine cost $200 for a 20 hour recorder unit (now I think it's $249 for a 40 hour unit). I pay monthly for the TiVo service, and it's $13.95 per month. As Caity said, you can pay a lifetime subscription fee, but it's now $299 for the life of the recorder. I highly recommend TiVo--go for it! :)

We got ours at Best Buy last July and don't know how we lived without it. We got a 40 hour Sony unit and did pay for the lifetime fee (it was $250 at the time). I love it for all of the reasons mentioned.

Just recently DH changed out the hard drive in it and now we have up to 141 hours at basic quality. We have ours set for medium quality and have over 83 hours recording time.

Quick question for you Tivo owners, do you have to have a phone line for Tivo? My roomate and I just use our cell phones and a cable modem so we don't need a home phone line. Do you have to have one for Tivo?

We have ours set up with our wireless network with our cable modem so it isn't hooked up to the phone line directly, but I think you do still need a phone line.

Actually, I probably should wait to answer until my DH gets home. He recently made some change and maybe it doesn't require the phone anymore. If nobody else answers, I'll let you know.

Okay, he just happened to call me and he said it updates via the cable modem. He said the first time you update after buying the Tivo you do need a regular phone line, but you could use a friends and then from then on you can use the cable modem.
