So why has Bush been quiet thus far?? Why has Blair been firm about their immediate and safe return, but certainly not threatening??

Quiet? We're conducting our largest military operations to date in those waters and the White House spokesman said that Bush met with Blair and offered our full support. Our State Department demanded an immediate release of the British sailors, and we're leaning on other countries to support these efforts. That's not "exactly" quiet. We've been leaning toward escalating tensions with Iran for quite awhile.

A fascinating (and I'm sure totally unrelated) side-note: Iran finalized a deal with China for oil exploration worth about $100 billion just two days prior to the British soldiers being captured. Interesting, when you consider that the oil-rich area to be explored is Khuzestan, on the left bank of the Shatt al-Arab, the location of the disputed waters where the British soldiers were captured.

What details do you want? These people who had absolutely nothing didn't want the Americans to leave. They cried, they brought gifts. The DMAT workers did not want or expect gifts. The injured walked by the tents of other countries and lined up for hours to see the Americans. Did they bring gifts to the Germans or French? I have no idea. The Americans had left by then but clearly, they were welcomed by the people and quite unwelcomed by the Mullahs and representatives of the Iranian government.

They were departure gifts, Dawn. Why would the Iranians bring gifts to the French and Germans-- who were not departing? Obviously, they passed their tents. It's nice that they appreciated the U.S.'s help, but I'm sure they appreciated all the help from every country. Tell your sis, "good job."

We always conduct war games in the Persian Gulf and we have soldiers deployed there. We don't need to be all that quiet. They broke international law. They need to comply!

My SIL's strong impression is that appreciated the American help the most. France and Germany and Russia have not been strangers to Iran.

And who set the bouys? Remember when Iran set the mines? We blew up their navy!

If I read the article right, the bouys were set after joint meetings between Iran and Iraq, but the water has been in dispute since the 1600's. Read the interesting side not about China. What do you make of that? Oil drilling in adjoining Iraq/Iran territory and the need for waterway access? Interesting. Power struggles with our enemies (Iran, North Korea) seem to more often than not indirectly effect China. Hmm.

Oh, and China supplies missiles to the Iranian navy. Did I mention that?

It's our largest military presence since the Iraq war began in that region.

Well, she was there. I wasn't. I'm glad she felt appreciated.

China has everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose by fomenting hostilities. They are a serious concern. They have gone from a brown water navy (ports) to a blue water navy in the last few years. They are definately a threat to world peace. If not someday directly, than certainly indirectly on many levels.

Why would the wounded not go to the French or German tents? That makes absolutely no sense...

Cripes! It should be 60-3. How the heck did I manage to do that?!

Maybe it's sooner. Put the British sailors in harm's way in disputed waters to force a showdown, or at least a clear definition of who controls the waters. It we wish to control the waters and the flow and transport of oil on the Iraq and Iran border, we can't leave Iraq, can we?

What a mess. If China has control of the oil fields and ports in the area, what a great point to transport arms into Iraq. That's another point. We keep saying insurgents in Iraq have Iranian weapons. Aren't those weapons made in China or Russia? Why don't we say they have Chinese weapons? I know, those are fighting words.

How do you know this? Where you there or know someone personally who was?
