Doctors or Nurses, can you clarify for me?

My DH had what we thought and still think was just a mole below his knee cap. He went to the derm to get it removed. It was scraped out and biopsyed for routine sake says the derm. We got a letter today saying the biopsy revealed that this lesion showed atypical vascular proliferation with rare mitotic figures. The lesion extends to the deep margin on the biopsy, therefre while it may appear to be removed, microscopically it has not been. A conservative compete excision is highly recommended at this time.

Can anyone please tell me what this all means. I tried to look up atypical vascular proliferation but I have no idea what these sites are talking about. It is not in terms that I can understand.

Any help would be great. We scheduled is appointment for Nov 12. I guess what I am after is, is this cancerous? Is this a bad thing? TIA

I don't know what the dx is, but the margins part means they need to go back and remove more tissue until they have a clean margin-the edges of the tissue section need to be completely untouched and clear of whatever the abnormal tissue is. Sorry I can't help with the other. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply............much appreciated.

Now I am not a doctor, nor do I play on on TV and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Anyway.... I've had a couple biopsies that had the work "atypical" in them and my Dr explained it to me that it was almost like being in a pre-cancer state. The cells aren't normal cells anymore, and yet they're not cancerous, but different enough to cause alarm and should be removed.

Thank you very much. When I read the letter, it scared me. And it is still a little scary to me. I hope this time they get it all out and it will not be an issue anymore.

yes they need to go in and excise the tissue to get clean margins, the clean margin will mean they got all the atypical tissue out.
mitotic figures are what they see under the microscope, normally they see cells with a nucleus, but when they see mitotic figures it looks like scrambled up, like a tangle, it means they are seeing the cell divide.
vascular proliferation means growth of more capillaries feeding the tissue in that area.
hope this helps

That does for sure but does that mean that it could be cancerous if not taken out? Can it spread or have already spread? Can you tell I am worried. LOL

Thanks for your reply.

they should remove it entirely or it could continue to grow. the pathologist can usually tell if the cells are malignant or benign, I am assuming this is a benign growth, and they want to remove it completely to prevent further growth and it turning malignant. only a malignant growth would have the potential to spread to other areas. and again, from what they sent you ,my guess is this is benign.
he will probably be asked to come in every year at least for skin checks since he will now have a history of atypical growth.
I can understand the worry, my hubby had one removed and he also had to go back to get the clean margins.
he now goes every year at least for skin checks.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your response. Thanks for saying it in a way I understand.
