Do your kids get 104 days of summer vacation?

Our school district adopted a balanced calendar a few years ago. I love it! While we have a short summer, we also get fabulous breaks throughout the year. 2 weeks in the fall, 2 weeks at Christmas, 2 weeks at Spring break as well.

We finished the year on May 30. School starts back up on July 31. 8 weeks of summer vacation isn't bad.

No matter how long it is, I'm always ready for them to go back!!!!

Back to school shopping starts after Independance day.

I would like this schedule a lot with such longer breaks in the middle of the year!! Though I am never ready for them to go back.

.

I wouldn't like that- I like the long summer and a shortened summer or round the year school would really mess with the summer camp schedules! The kids here can not go to school in July or August--- even June is pushing it. Schools here are not air conditioned so the kids are miserable in there in June.

My students have 61 days this summer (Thursday was their last day)

My own children I think have 66

We had a lot of snow days

Our kids just got out and will go back after Labor Day. After a good amount of snow days and hurricane Sandy days to make up, our kids certainly don't get 104 days of summer vacation. We will try to squeeze as much summer fun as possible in though the next few months!:cool1:

We're switching school districts so the kids are only getting 5-6 weeks this summer. The new district has a really long school year. But on the upside, a lot of time off, so more off season trips to Disney World (and other places, too).

2 months in Belgium.

School stops June 30th, and will begin September 1st (or later, if the 1st is on a Saturday).

63 days here because of snow days. My kids got out June 25th and go back August 27th. At least we have WDW to look forward to in October!!!!!

We have 85 days off this summer. We were out May 31 and go back Aug 26th. This year I'll be sending all 4 kids to school.

Oh, I like this one!

We have 67 days off. last day was June 21st and first day back is August 27th. I think our last day would have been June 13th but we had 4 snow days and 2 hurricane days.

71 days here. Kids got out June 11th because we had 6 snow days to make up. They go back Aug. 22nd.

No wonder the U.S. education system is struggling to keep up with the rest of the world. They fail to see that actually school attendance plays a key role :rotfl2:

I wouldn't count on the accuracy of that poster or use that information as the standard for the entire US. Our district had the kids in school for 183 days this year. That's pretty normal for us. The minimum is 180 days.

Our district starts just after Labor Day and gets out around June 20th or so. This year it was 6/25. We get a few days at Thanksgiving, about a week at Christmas, a few days for President's Day, a week for spring break, plus a few single days here and there for other holidays and teacher in service.

This would be AWESOME! DD got out of school on May 23, and her first day of the fall semester is August 19. With her being in AP classes, there's NO way we can take her out of school for vacation, and summers and spring break at WDW are too crowded for DH, who has a crowd phobia. It would be totally cool to have a break mid-semester!

That's not really true. If you are simply looking at test scores, the US isn't lagging behind. The US tests everybody. Students will IQs of 61, students who live in poverty, students who don't speak English, etc. Many other countries will only test their cream of the crop. Here's a link to an interesting article, with additional links to test scores of the world. http://dailyhowler.blogspot.com/2012/12/fooled-about-schools-black-kids-beat.html For those who don't want to sift through the whole article, it basically says that American kids are doing pretty damn good compared to the rest of the world. In some instances, we even beat Finland, who is held up as the holy grail of educational systems. Here is a quote from the article:
American fourth-graders outscored their peers in Canada, England, Germany and France; each is a large, well-known nation. They also outperformed their peers in Spain, Italy, Australia and Taiwanfour other rather large nations. (Technically, Taiwan is still part of China.)

They outscored almost every smaller European nation, including such lights for the world as Ireland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.

They outscored Israel and New Zealand. They outperformed The Czech Republic and The Slovak Republic. The outperformed Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Lithuania and Poland. They bested their peers in Portugal and Belgium (Flemish region only).

If you're talking about factors other than testing, in many countries, students are chosen to go into different "tracks". The "bright" students go on an academic track, while the less bright students go on a vocational track. Thankfully, in America, every student has an opportunity for an education that best suits him or her. We have special education programs for students who struggle. Many countries write off their special education population. Granted, American education isn't perfect, but let's not say that the rest of the world is kicking our butts.

In any event, have you seen the number of posts on here from parents who pull their kids from school to go to Disney? If schools didn't offer vacation time, there would be an uproar. :rotfl:

To address the original post, our students go to school for 181 days. We got out May 31st, and the kids go back August 16th. Teachers go back much earlier.

I am from the UK and I only get 47 days of summer vacation. 21st of July to 6th of September. all you children in America are lucky with your 80-day summer vacations.

This year they only got 72 days of summer vacation. School started a week earlier this year and will let out a week early, which lead to a short summer. Add that to the fact that the last 2 weeks of their summer vacation was colder than normal, they felt like they really got a short summer.
