Do your kids attend a sleep away summer camp?

Can’t you just stick her on a plane and then pick her up at the airport? Dd21 started flying alone at 10, it was fine. Especially with 2 of them.

This thread really isn't about what I thought it would be, not sure exactly what the OP wants help with.

But as for the actual question - my kids have done a sleep away camp since they were in 1st grade, its always been the highlight of their summer. I'm sure that next year they'll start doing the junior counselor stuff and woulnd't be surprised if they didn't spend a summer or two as a full time counselor during college, they seem to love it that much.

Mine never did but only because she's not a camp loving kid. She tried day camp a few different times over the years and mostly tolerated it. She's in college now so her sights are set on semester abroad.

Camp Grandparents House is the best!! Good memories of going to mine for a couple of weeks in the summer when I was little. Daily ice creams and the beach only down the road, what's not to love?

Both of mine attended 4H camp locally, my son attended many FSU Music Camps and my daughter spent several summers at 3 week long Duke TiP programs at various Colleges. One did involve her flying, the others involved overnight car rides to drop off and pick up.

I think if you can swing it, these experiences are important. If you can't, there are lots of other summer enrichment experiences for kids that are worthwhile.

If I read the OP correctly, she's hesitating on that that because the local airport near the camp is a very small one with little competition, so the airfare to get to it is much more than the nearest major airport, AND the camp is going to charge her an additional fee from ground transport to get her to and from that local airport.

One possibility might be to check out coach service from the major airport, assuming that the camp is held on a university campus. Coach services like Megabus do tend to provide service between airports and universities. Kids who are competitive-level athletes are usually pretty good at solo travel; I know mine is.

I'm guessing that the increased airfare and transportation costs would still be much less than 2 additional round trip tickets/rental car/ hotel stay. Based on the age for junior counselors around here, I'm guessing the kids are old enough to fly by themselves, especially if it's a direct flight.

We have Groome shuttles here that go from all area airports to our local university. She might want to look into that, as well.

In my opinion, the posters I quoted are the luckiest ones. Your children have the luxury of forming lasting memories with their grandparents. While my husband and I are grateful that we can send our kids to sleep away camp that they absolutely love, I would feel even luckier if my children could have had the opportunities that your children get to experience with their grandparents. My mom passed away when my kids were very young and neither my dad or my husband's mom could have taken them for even half a day, let alone a week.

Well... I don't want to be a braggart but my kids will also be splitting the time between two grandparent camps since one is only open on the weekends.

We work hard to keep riff-raff out. (This is actually amusing because my SIL really thinks that )

I am very grateful for this. I treasure the summers with my grandmother and she only live 90 mins away. My only regret was waiting until they were "old enough". I wish they would have gotten the chance to spend that time with my father before he died.

My one son started going to Ballet summer intensives whe he was 13. The other one went to Flipfest Gymnastics camp the first time when he was 11. I am a coach, so he always went with me. Now he still goes with me but as a coach instead of a gymnast.

I thought about sending my son to this; however, once he heard they use the lasso of truth every night he decided he couldn't risk having to spill all his secrets!!
