Can't stand them! It wouldn't bother me so much if those who have them could talk or do ANYTHING with out playing with them and clicking them! YUCK!

Maybe the next trend will be wearing a clothespin on your tongue! They even come in fashion colors...

Like any piercing the hole does go away when the ring is removed

From what I understand, that's not completely true. The tongue is a muscle and it won't close the hole completely unlike cartilidge in your ear.

YUCK YUCK YUCK

Though I did have a boyfriend once... ;)

:crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:

Eww. Ick. Yuck.

They just turn my stomach. Every now and then I'll be somewhere and the cashier will have one, and I have to just look away. Every time I see them my stomach fliip-flops and I just want to ... ick can't even think of it.

DIZNYFAN, you are probably right! My husband was very supportive when I got my first tat on my left shoulder blade. Fortunately we agree on that area in what we like and we don't. Good luck to your wife... I hope she won't be in too much pain!

Nancy, you reminded me, I do think they are cool when they glow in the dark or black light :teeth:

Oh and fwiw, except for my best friend who called me the day after she got it done, I have never noticed anyone talking funny with one. They are actually quite easy to hide if those who have them want to!

HATE HATE HATE THEM.

Funny story. A couple of years ago I worked with a high school student. She said she was getting one for her 18th birthday and I hassled her about it. Told her they were disgusting. She got one anyway (of course). A couple of weeks later she came to work and admitted that she had accidentally SWALLOWED the ball! She had to go pay to have another ball put in her tongue. I laughed so hard.

They are NASTY. Nothing is worse than sitting in a class listening to the kid next to you clicking that thing on their teeth. YUCK:crazy2: And I've had a chipped tooth fixed. I have no desire to do anything that would put me through that again. No tongue piercings for me ever.

Wow, seems there are lots of misconceptions about tongue piercings.

I've had my tongue pierced for 9 years now. Most people I meet don't know I even have one (and honestly I've never even met one person that does have one that I could tell by their speech..), most of the time people don't realize until i'm either laughing so hard that I open my mouth wide and they see it, or I'm yelling with my mouth open and they see it. Infact, my parents didn't even know for 2 months that I had had it done, until one day we were all sitting around laughing. Most of the jobs I've had it was months before the people I worked with even knew.

Also, I've never once chipped a tooth with my piercing, and considering it's a 4g (which is larger than the average tongue piercing), I'd venture to guess that not THAT many people actually do chip their teeth. Again, I know a lot of people that have had them, and never heard about someone chipping a tooth. I've also been to atleast 3 different dentists since having it (fillings/checkups/cleanings) and not one of the dentists has ever made mention of how it could be detrimental to my dental health.

Also (as per the other thread), I did not get my tongue pierced to be different, I manage that just fine on my own. I got it because it seemed interesting. I think tongue piercings (if done correctly, with certain barbels) can look very nice. It was my first piercing (aside from ears), and the piercing experience can be very exciting and thrilling (much like riding a rollercoaster).

As for what it will look like when I'm older, well it will probably look exactly the same. Considering it hasn't changed much in 9 years (aside from the modifications I made to it), I doubt it's going to look much different in another 9 years, or 20 years, etc.

My mother was adamently against my getting pierced, but I went ahead and did it anyway. She was so hell bent on thinking that people that did these things were 'trashy' or drug addicts, or couldn't get a job after they did these things, and other random things I've seen mentioned on this thread. Since then she's realized that I'm a good human being, it doesn't change that. It doesn't change my love for my family, and luckily for me she opened up to it and decided it wouldn't change her love for me either. I think now she thinks it was almost silly to think something like that could make a person into something else.. I hope I've helped some other people realize this too.

tricia.

From what I understand, that's not completely true. The tongue is a muscle and it won't close the hole completely unlike cartilidge in your ear.

The tongue is actually one of the fastest healing parts of your body. When I removed my tongue ring after having it for 4 years, it healed within a few hours to the point that the barbell would not go all the way through, by the next day it had healed completely and was not even visible that there ever had been a peircing. I also never had chipped teeth or any impact on my speech.

I don't think theres anything wrong with the piercing. I got one, not to be different, but just cause it seemed neat. Hey, I was 18 and it was something to do... Literally, I tagged along with a friend buying new belly jewelery and decided to get pierced then and there. I'd much rather have my child get something like that then something like a tat (which I also have... and don't see anything wrong with, just shouldn't be an impetuous decision), thats permanent.

I really don't mind them on others... it's just the thought of having it done to ME that puts me in the 'Hate them' column. I couldn't imagine the pain! Eeeeeekk!!!:faint:

Wow.. thanks for the memories. The hottest guy I ever dated had a tongue ring. I don't remember it getting on my nerves..

I cannot understand this fascination with body piercing. I work with lots of young girls. between tatoo's and body piercing. It's a contest to see who can have the most things done to their body. Week after week they spend their pay. Not one saves a dime. Their body is covered with decorations, some glow in the dark. Not one is content with their life.

So someone tell me why?

As far as tongue piercing they all sound like they have a speech impediment.

hahahaha

yes...many MANY moons ago...way back in highschool I dated a guy with a tongue ring...very fun to kiss.

I honestly don't mind them...I wouldn't get it done to myself, but I don't mind them at all. (I do remember when I worked at a fast food restaurant during college that i had to yell at some of the kids "playing" with their tongue rings in front of customers "keep it in your mouth, the seniors don't need to see that!")

I had my eyebrow pierced and that totally grossed out my parents - because it was on my face. I took that out when I got my "real job" and got my navel pierced. (all back in my early 20's). DH actually had his nipple pierced for a few years...he had to remove it though when we went through Firefighter training...THAT was hot! :) (also - that's one place I'd never pierce on my body either...owie!)

"So someone tell me why?"

Body art is a personal thing...piercings aren't permanent...and they were very "in" back in the 90's. (not sure how much so now...seems like EVERYONE has something pierced). I thought long and hard about my tattoo...wanted one for many years...waited nearly 10 years until I finally got it.

for me - it makes me unique...who I am. I have 13 earrings between my 2 ears...I took them all out once...and people actually said "put them back in - you look different...weird".
