My father is a PhD research scientist and he never allowed us to because he knew the dangers. We avoided all raw meats and uncooked eggs. I raised my boys the same way and the only food poisoning I have ever had came from food prepared by someone else. The odds may be slim in your mind, but the reality is 1 in 6 people get food poisoning every year.
Years ago when people raised their own eggs there were almost never any incidents of salmonella or e-coli. Now with mass produced eggs in crowded hen houses, it's much more common. I love how people won't believe something until it happens to them no matter how many warnings and how much proof there is.
You don't build an immune system by exposing someone to the possibility of salmonella or e-coli. You can however make someone deathly ill by doing so. Having had or being exposed to salmonella or e-coli doesn't protect you from getting it or getting it again.
Just wondering how many of you avoid the warnings about eggs and salmonella and still lick the bowl of cake batter, brownie batter, cookie dough? I used to when I was a kid but you won't catch me now nor will I let my kids. I miss that awesome chunk of raw choc chip cookie dough though.
Yup. I try to make things when nobody else is around too so I can have the batter/dough all to myself.![]()
I do- and I dont' worry at all. We also eat our beef on the rare side, our eggs over easy and once in a while I've been known to thaw something on the counter! I don't even remember the last time anyone in the house had any "tummy trouble".
I lick the beaters, AND I'm pregnant!I also have an 11 year old daughter who has been licking the spoon/beaters ever since she was able to ask. (yep, I ate the batter when I was pregnant with her too) Gotta build up that immune system somehow!
Yellow cake batter and brownie batter are my absolute FAVORITE!! I've had food poisoning before and thought I was going to die, but it wasn't from licking the bowl.I'm still not scared.![]()

When DS and I are making choc chip cookies, we like to take a very small sample of the sugars, butter, vanilla and egg mix as well.
