Do you lick the bowl???

As a matter of fact, I just finished licking the bowl from a cake I just put in the oven. I've been doing this forever and so have my kids and we are no worse for wear :)

My father is a PhD research scientist and he never allowed us to because he knew the dangers. We avoided all raw meats and uncooked eggs. I raised my boys the same way and the only food poisoning I have ever had came from food prepared by someone else. The odds may be slim in your mind, but the reality is 1 in 6 people get food poisoning every year.

Years ago when people raised their own eggs there were almost never any incidents of salmonella or e-coli. Now with mass produced eggs in crowded hen houses, it's much more common. I love how people won't believe something until it happens to them no matter how many warnings and how much proof there is.

You don't build an immune system by exposing someone to the possibility of salmonella or e-coli. You can however make someone deathly ill by doing so. Having had or being exposed to salmonella or e-coli doesn't protect you from getting it or getting it again.

I'm a licker -- bowl, spoon, beaters, etc.. We are all lickers in this house!

When my mom was in high school back in the mid 1950s, she used to bring raw beef and onion sandwiches to school in her lunch every day. Several of her friends did, too! No one ever got sick. They were lucky, I guess!

I'm still not scared. :thumbsup2

I do! I've probably eaten my weight in cookie dough and cake batter, but I have never been sick. I've let my kids do it as well. Maybe I have an iron stomach, but I've never experienced food poisioning at a restaurant or in my own kitchen either.

Just wondering how many of you avoid the warnings about eggs and salmonella and still lick the bowl of cake batter, brownie batter, cookie dough? I used to when I was a kid but you won't catch me now nor will I let my kids. I miss that awesome chunk of raw choc chip cookie dough though.

I do every time, and have never been sick yet...

Yup. I try to make things when nobody else is around too so I can have the batter/dough all to myself.:thumbsup2

That's what I do!! :thumbsup2

I do- and I dont' worry at all. We also eat our beef on the rare side, our eggs over easy and once in a while I've been known to thaw something on the counter! I don't even remember the last time anyone in the house had any "tummy trouble".

Same here.

I lick the beaters, AND I'm pregnant! I also have an 11 year old daughter who has been licking the spoon/beaters ever since she was able to ask. (yep, I ate the batter when I was pregnant with her too) Gotta build up that immune system somehow!

Yep, it's been awhile since I was pregnant, but I ate raw cookie dough then too.

I can't believe there are actually people that don't eat the cookie dough. :confused3 Yellow cake batter and brownie batter are my absolute FAVORITE!! I've had food poisoning before and thought I was going to die, but it wasn't from licking the bowl.

Agreed.

Like I said before, I am not willing to live my life worrying about what might happen. If I did, then I would have to wrap myself in bubble wrap (and then worry about the possibility of cancer from the plastic or worry about suffocating...) and never leave the house (what about carbon monoxide poisoning or fumes from the carpet).

I taste as I bake - I don't lick the bowl cause I'm just not a sweets person. My husband and the kids however wait for the bowl. spoon and anything else that may have some batter on it.:rotfl:

It also it not unusual at all for them to eat cookie batter before I even get to bake them.

I lick the bowl, beaters, spoon - pretty much anything covered in cake batter, cookie dough or brownie batter. Mmmmmmmmm.

Heck yeah! DH doesn't (he's diabetic), but DS8 and I do. I love the brownie batter the best.

When DS and I are making choc chip cookies, we like to take a very small sample of the sugars, butter, vanilla and egg mix as well.

I have been known to make brownies, cakes and pumpkin pie (my absolute fav) and none of it ever got to the oven. Still alive to DIS about it and no adverse effects.

Yup, we lick the bowl and even eat the dough! I dont believe the 1 in 6 ratio. I've never had food poisoning and no in my family has had it either.

I did get food poisoning once as a kid: from a hot dog at a country music jamboree my dad was playing at, actually alot of people got sick that day.

I may have a hot dog maybe once a year, mostly grilled. just for that memory of me having to get a needle to calm down the wonderful symptoms of it.

I am 48 years old, been licking bowls and beaters since I was about 7. I have never had food poisoning and neither have my kids, they oldest being 14 and boy to they fight to lick. Sorry, but I just don't know anyone this has happened to, but I know it does. But then again, so does mad cow and I haven't given up red u red meat either.
Top each their own, but licking the bowl is something I will continue to do.

Yep, but I also make eggnog and French silk pie from raw eggs, though, so I guess I just live life on the edge....

Microbiology major here.. and I lick the spoon or beaters every time. As long as you properly store eggs, the chances of getting salmonella or e.coli is so slim that I don't stress about it. Now I have a hankering for cookie dough.. and I'm on crutches and can't go downstairs :(
