Do you lick the bowl???

many warnings and how much proof there is.

You don't build an immune system by exposing someone to the possibility of salmonella or e-coli. You can however make someone deathly ill by doing so. Having had or being exposed to salmonella or e-coli doesn't protect you from getting it or getting it again.

Great post. I understand being willing to take the risk, but I'm surprised at how many people seem to think they're building immunity.

I'm willing to take the risk for occasional cookie dough or batter. I won't do it for eggnog made with raw eggs though. However, I did avoid the risk during pregnancy and didn't allow my small children to risk it either.

I don't, I used to but now I'm just grossed out, I've seen too many things on TV about how eggs are harvested (?) and... EWWWW.

I'm going to look into Egg Beaters though. :goodvibes

Yep! and my kids do to, best part of baking.
When I make chocolate chip cookies I scoop out 3 giant spoonfuls of cookie dough & put them on the cupboard for when my girls walk in to the room. Even at 21, 18 & 18 they are still excited when they see the spoons laying there.

I also freeze the cookie dough in "cookie balls" so they can be baked fresh daily if we want. They're always sneaking cookie balls to each!

We're all still here!

nope, 6 years aqo i watched my husband go through a 2 week battle with salmonella and 1 week of that was in the hospital. i see what he goes through now with the lingering damage done to his body. i know i can't avoid it if i eat out (that's where he got it) but i can avoid risky behavior in my home that could lead to it-especially with all the eggs recalled last year.

Cookie dough is the best part about homemade cookies-gritty goodness. That being said, I did not eat it when pregnant and don't let the kids eat it.

We always used to lick the bowl, beaters and spoons after our mother baked something. Actually, we used to fight over it! Now, though, I don't do it if I've made something with eggs nor do I allow my DS9 to do it either. :goodvibes

I don't let my girls but I have caught them sneaking dough though. When I was a kid, I remember (he has admitted to doing this) my father taking a piece of raw hamburger, sprinkle it with a little salt and eat it. I have never done so, too gross! He never got sick from doing that. He said growing up on the farm, he, his three brothers and Dad used to do it all the time. Although my Grandma denied she allowed this! lol To my knowledge I haven't gotten sick from licking the bowl, beaters and raw dough, but I don't want to take chances with my girls though.

:thumbsup2 And I also sometimes during certain times of the month:rolleyes1 buy some Nestle raw cookie dough and just eat that for dinner. Boy that's good. :lmao:
Usually it's breakfast for me. And after reading this thread I could kick myself for not buying some cookie dough when I was at the store today. :goodvibes

I'm 43 and yes I do. However, after the recall of Nestle, DD12 stopped doing it. More for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl2:
What Nestle recall are you referring too?

Ive gotten food poisoning from Chicken Pot Pies- still eat those

Ive gotten Salmonella from Tomatoes from a hoagie at sheetz- still eat tomatoes and still eat the hoagies.

Ive never gotten sick from licking the bowl/spoon or beaters but even if I did, with my track record, Id probably still be doing it.

Lifes to short for the what ifs. Heck Im allergic to bees and still go barefoot most of the summer.

Of course! I take much bigger risks everytime I walk out my front door.

Now I'm craving chocolate chip cookie dough...

I am bad about eating cookie dough, *knock on wood* it has never hurt me.

Growing up my sister and I would whip up chocolate chip cookies and split the dough. Mom always gave a beater to each of us for all kinds of batter.

I do this with my kids. I don't even give it a second thought.

Same here. Love me some white cake batter. Yum! I usually end up making a small cake because DD8 and I are too busy eating the batter. Sometimes for dessert, we don't want to wait for cookies to bake so we will just eat the raw cookie dough. We are still alive and kickin!!

This is one of those "dangers" I don't worry too much about. We don't bake often, so the risk is no greater than anytime we go out to eat - or for that matter, anytime we eat! E-coli and salmonella can be present in food that is cooked or prepared at home too, not just in restaurants. I'm not prepared to limit my life to that extent over a very small risk.
