Do You Hunt?

Yes you are totally right that there is no way to be absolutely sure that no animals are dying because of you (general "you"). Being vegetarian or vegan is just the most direct way to cut down on that number, and by a lot I might add!
Also, see my other post about how a huge portion of the veggies grown are actually grown to feed animals. So we are growing food to feed food and in that way eating meat is actually "consuming" more plants than a vegan ever would. Think about how much corn it takes to grow one cow, or one pig, and then the fact that each pig only has two shoulders and how many of those you have eaten in your lifetime!

But I digress, and more to the point of this thread I actually find hunting to be much more humane than buying meat from the store.

Not trying to argue or be snarky. I am asking an honest question here: You obviously have an issue killing any animals and that if fine. Your belief, your life and all that. But my question is this, what do you think we should do with all the animals instead?

Take the deer here. There are no natural predators. We have coyotes but they cannot take down a full grown deer and go after few of the babies. The deer would honestly get to the point of moving us out! There is an area close to my MIL's house where they decided to stop all hunting. People started seeing malnourished and in bred deer by the dozens. They opened up hunting again and soon the sick deer were gone and the herd was healthy again.

Texas and they problem they are having with feral hogs is another example.

Not wanting to judge your opinion, just honestly interested.

I have to say I think that a lot of commercials are stupid, but there's one recently from Maaco that made me chuckle. Driver on a dark road, deer jumps out and he slams on the brakes only to stop 3" short of hitting it. Driver looks relieved. Deer looks at him and starts to kick the car (there's an alternate one where the buck leans over and scratches the hood with the antlers). Those made me LOL.

As for the vegetarian thing, each to their own. Definitely not a vegetarian. I think it's unhealthy and unnatural. I'm eating boneless/skinless chicken as I type this...seriously.

I think if i saw a boneless skinless chicken I would think it is unnatural too!! Hahahahaha.....I crack me up. :P

He must have edited because when I read his post it reminded me of my ds years ago told me that KFC bred chickens without heads or feet. Talk about unnatural :rotfl:

But, wouldn't that create a shortage of McNuggets?

Yeah I think this is a totally valid point and as I had mentioned in an earlier post I actually find hunting to be much more humane than buying meat from the grocery store.

I think overpopulation of certain animals and hunting is actually a different issue altogether than the business of animal agriculture, which is what I have a real problem with.

@Klayfish

Did you edit? I swear the unnatural part was AFTER the chicken part when I started typing and then after sumpbmitting it moved.

Yes, I did edit it, because I proof read it after I hit submit. When I read it, I quickly realized how incredibly wrong...and funny...it came out. I'll go back and put it back the way it was, it's funnier that way. :upsidedow

But, wouldn't that create a shortage of McNuggets?

Do you remember the old chicken nuggets? Before they were "all white meat"? To me they tasted so much better back then?

Anyone else remember that?

I know it's off topic but it made me reminisce about the old "beaks and claws" chicken nuggets as we called them.

I don't just like this, I LOVE IT! Reverse editing for twisted humor!

My bil is like your family. LOVES to hunt. Deer, turkey, rabbits--pretty much anything. And they eat whatever he kills. I don't like ground deer or sausage. I do like fried steaks and deer roast. Bil and Sil took a deer he killed and a wild boar their son killed and had it made into sausage. They say it was really really good. One of the reasons I don't like deer sausage is that it can be dry and they said the boar meat kept it from being dry.

I will say that I have thought of encouraging dh to take up hunting more often when I see their grocery bill compared to mine!! lol

Yes, venison (ground) is quite dry. When I cook up a pound of it for goulash or spaghetti, etc. I have maybe a tablespoon of grease to drain off. I like to make meatloaf using a pound of ground venison and a pound of ground pork, delicious! And I understand what you mean about the grocery bill, it's shocking how much ground beef costs these days, especially the 80/20 or better. I love having a freezer full of ground venison. :)

The big thrill these days is seeing a bald eagle. Still rare, but not unheard of like in my youth. Maybe one day that too will become commonplace :)

Bald eagles are making a comeback here too, we see them in the fields quite often, and sometimes in their nests and flying. So beautiful!

A thrill for me would be to see a moose when we're traveling in the upper peninsula. I've never seen one in the wild before and hope I do before I die. :)

I don't hunt, but my husband does. My twin boys are just getting started as well. My husband follows all the rules. He only hunts where he has permission. He hikes in and carries out. He refuses to hunt with a 4-wheeler (very popular around here. He considers that the lazy way to hunt). He does get excited when he gets his animal, but it's more a thrill of the hunt excitement. For him, there is a lot of tracking his animal, predicting movement based on past movement. He has hunted deer, antelope, elk, and black bear. We ground the meat, make sausage, steaks, and roast. He makes a ton of jerkey (himself) as well. If he happens to get an animal with a good rack, he will mount it, but he primarily hunts for the meat. If he gets the rack, that's a bonus. I've had badly prepared game meat, but wish I could invite all of you that say you hate wild game over for dinner. I am positive that if you were just invited for dinner, you would never know it was wild game and not beef. My husband is an amazing cook. He also loves to BBQ or smoke the meats he prepares. So yummy!

With all that said, my daughter can't bring herself to eat any of the meat. She will eat beef, which is so weird. I wish she could see the living environment of the cows/steers that are raised strictly for slaughter. The wild animals that her dad hunts have lived a far better life, and killed much more quickly and humanely than most of the cattle that end up in stores/restaurants.

This came up on my pinterest today and it made me think of this thread

I'm not the one you quoted, but the reason there are no natural predators is also our fault. The hunting of SLEEPING bears and wolves was just approved on protected lands in Alaska. They have called for the culls of wolf packs in various of the lower 48 states as well. Even when not killed directly by hunting, predators are killed by poisoning or driven away by habitat loss. We messed up the balance. If there were enough predators, there wouldn't be so much prey. There's been quite a lot of research done on the positive effects of reintroducing predators to various locations for the entire ecosystem. Here's an awesome short clip about reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone:

I'm also vegan and I am opposed to hunting. I grew up on a farm and while I hear hunters say how humane it is, believe me we often saw injured animals during hunting season who came onto our property. Yes, I know all the hunters say they wouldn't let that happen, but in reality, many do. And that is horrible to see. Also, while I'm sure any DIS hunters are extremely careful, a great many are not. Many of our neighbours had dogs that were shot, horses that were shot, cattle that were shot. One women on our street was shot while working in her backyard by a stray bullet (not killed, it just got her in the arm). I saw people in the back of pick-up trucks driving down the road and shooting into the bushes as they went along.

As to what would happen to the animals if the numbers weren't kept down by hunting - if you look at some of the studies done on places (like animal preserves) where hunting is stopped, the natural balance will resume over time. The numbers will increase to the maximum capacity and then decrease. New predators will move into the area. And predators take the sicker, weaker animals rather than going for the biggest, most impressive ones.

Sooooo that is your answer for the insane overpopulation of feral hogs In Texas? Let nature take its course? Sorry but the initiatives put in place previously to control aren't even making a dent. Allowing it to continue will only make things worse. It's a rose-tinted glasses perspective to believe that .

Predators don't create a "balance". They contribute to an endless cycle of boom & bust. Predators will overpopulate just like prey, the prey will be in short supply, and the predators will die of disease & starvation. Eventually, the prey will recover, overpopulate and begin to die of disease & starvation until the predators recover & the cycle restarts.

Eventually, it does "generally" work itself out, but the balance we often hear about is a rarity, and a temporary situation when it does occur.
