Do people ALWAYS spell your name wrong?

My name is Rory... typically people spell it correctly but sometimes I do get Rori. That's a little annoying, but hey, I can deal.

What's really annyoing is how when I introduce myself or someone learns my name they always say "Rory.. Like Rory from Gilmore Girls?!" and then gush about how much the love the show.

Also, I have a pretty common last name. It's typically spelled with 2 L's but everyone always leaves off the 2nd L.

I have had to spell my name for people my entire life. Both first and last name. Ditto for my wife, although only her first name until we married, now she has to spell both. And we just gave an alternately spelled name to our son, so he'll have a life of spelling it out out too, which he was already stuck with given our last name. None are difficult to spell, just different from the norm.

I've gotten used it. No big deal. But I do understand. It does get mildly annoying when people who've known you a long time still cant get it right.

People constantly spell my name either Patti or Pattie. And my son has a unique spelling to his first name. His name is Benjamen Sean. People are constantly writing his name Benjamin Shawn.

People are always spelling and misprouncing my last name. I can understand that as it is an unusual name.

But ... my first name is another matter. People are always tring to add an I to thus making it a completely different name - which I hate!!!

My first and last names are spelled very conventionally -- if you speak Irish. If you don't, they are a wee bit difficult. As my parents emigrated to the US in the 1950's, I've been spelling it aloud all my life. I'm used to it and I got over the aggravation when I was about 6. It's always mispronounced, too -- I just let that roll after ascertaining that I am the person being spoken to.

However, having gotten used to reflexive out-loud spelling, I decided NOT to change my name when I got married. DH's name is short and very easy to spell, but it is not pronounced at all like it looks -- so back to the spelling we go. I figured that as long as I'd have to spell anyway, I'd just stick to the one that I've been spelling since I could speak.

Of course, I wasn't thinking ahead to the possibility of children. They have his last name, so now I get to spell them both.

My DS's name is Isaiah. I got the name from the bible. I have been amazed at how many times his name is spelled wrong. I had him enrolled in a Church day care, and they always spelled his name Isaih. I have gotten cakes half off at Walmart because his name was spelled right on the order sheet, but wrong on the cake! Is it really that hard?

Our DS is that way too but his name is even easier......Micah......we have seen Micha, Micaih, etc. and usually by Sunday School teachers at church,it's like "hey, haven't you all even read the old testament?"

My name is Kathi, with a K and an I, but I always get Cathy. It really doesn't bother me that much any more.

What does bother me is when people botch my last name. It has an apostrophe in it. Yes, it's the legal spelling of my name. You need to program your computer to accept that apostrophe in the name field.

My sister's name is Loretta. She's 49 and my dad still spells it with 2 Rs. Drives her right up the wall. Maybe someday he'll figure it out.

Not really. My name is Jennifer and I go by Jenny or Jenn (2 n's, yes). Pretty common.

My last name gets a letter cut off from it all the time.

Yes, my name is Ami. I also have a last name that is spelled 2 different ways, mine being the least common. My school yearbook finally got them both right when I was a senior. Although, my married name is an extremely common last name with very simple spelling and people still misspell it.

Since...well...always...I have had to spell my name for people.

Me: Hi, my name is Teena. T-e-e-n-a.

Often I say T-double e-n-a. That gets a sarcastic look usually.

My name isn't short for anything either.

It's still misspelled quite regularly.

My name is Tonya and everyone always spells it Tanya. I learned when I was about 11 to stop correcting people and to just go with it, it's easier that way I do make it a point to spell out my name if I'm ever reserving something over the phone and ask them to spell it back to me. I kid you not, probably 4 times out of 10 or so, they will read back to me T-A-N-Y-A even though I JUST spelled it out!

I gave my daughter a different spelling for her name, so I know she'll be in for it. You're probably wondering why I didn't spell it traditionally when I know from experience, she'll have problems with it. I just don't like the traditional spelling of it. Love the name, hate the spelling. It can be pronounced 2 ways and I don't like the other pronunciation, so I spelled her name phonetically (no, nothing like LaFawnduh ). I'm sure she'll still get called all kinds of crazy things by not having a traditional spelling.

LOL, this is a funny thread. I got tired of correcting people, so I just tell them you can spell it however you like, just make sure it sounds correct when you say my name out loud.

Misspelled and mispronounced. Not only that, my first name took up too many spaces and was cut off and changed to a boy's name--the selective service kept sending letters threatening to arrest me for not registering!
