Do people ALWAYS spell your name wrong?

All the time, my name starts with a C, not a K, so I usually head them off right away... and if they do start with the C, they almost always come up with a different name? It doesn't bother me much, but I do correct them, how else will they know?

Do you have a name that's spelled differently? Can you relate?

I can absolutely relate, my name is Debbi and I constantly get the mispelling. For people who you know or for people that you communicate with on a regular basis it is infuriating. Even my mother-in-law, who I have known for 24 years ocassionally mispells my name. I truly believe it is a lack of respect.

Yes to all three names. The first and middle names I can sorta understand. The last name is NOT difficult. It is Angell. Just like the heavenly beings. I get Angel a lot. That one doesn't bother me. The misspelling that does bother me is Angle. How is that even close to Angell?

My name is Terri. I have an aunt who keeps spelling it Teri.

Other people keep spelling it Terry.

No people, it's T- E- R - R - I!

Of course, that's short for Teresa. Tons of people keep trying to spell it Theresa. Sorry, no H in my name.

Hi! I am also Teresa with the nickname Terri. I rarely meet other Teresas and my dad's family ALWAYS spelled my name Theresa.

So, when giving my name I either say "Terri with an I" or I say "Teresa, no H" It doesn't really bother me, but the email issue does. My name is in my email address AND my email signature at work and people still reply to my email and start off " Hi Terry,"

On the other hand, that makes me hyper-aware of names and students often tell me I am the only person that spells their name correctly or asks about proper pronunciation.

My name is Jodi. Everyone asks is that spelled with a y or ie. I say just an i. Happens every time.

My name is Jodie. Not Jodi or Jody. I understand if people I meet for the first time (or have only spoken to over the phone) spell my name wrong when they address me in writing for the first or second time. I get that. Honest. Jodie isn't the most popular spelling of my name.

This is what bothers me: if I've written you an email and clearly signed my name, or I've sent you an IM when my name is clearly listed in the header of the IM window, or you've bothered to contact me by looking me up in our employee directory where my name is spelled right, some people still spell my name wrong, even after immediately seeing it spelled correctly. It bothers me most especially when they spell it wrong on rosters other people reference.

I had a manager for 2 years (who knew me for 7 years before that) who would write my performance appraisals with my name bouncing back and forth from Jodi to Jody to my favorite Jodee. I have several colleagues I work with regularly via webmeetings (my name is on the attendee list) and emails and IMs who never spell my name right. Ever. Teachers, neighbors, friends .... it's always been the same.

I have never said a word to anyone, except for that manager who wrote my performance appraisals. But it matters to me, and obviously it bothers me. Especially at work when you communicate with someone and your name is all over the place and they still can't get it right. I actually get excited when people spell my name correctly!

My company preaches "Respect for Individuals" as one of our core values. Would that not include learning how to spell my name?

Are names just not important to some people?

Do you have a name that's spelled differently? Can you relate?

Yes I can. My first name is Merryl. Even family spells it wrong...a pet peeve of mine. I usually get Meryl.

My daughter is Larisa with one s, not Larissa. Now, while I do not mind strangers misspelling it, my DH's family should know how to spell it since the child is already 9 YO and I have been spelling it the same way since she was born. :sad2:

Its a small world after all ... I'm Larisa with one s, too!!! :thumbsup2

Oh goodness yes. My first name is Elisabeth, not Elizabeth. But I'm pretty used to it by now.

Yes yes yes people misspell my name and mispronounce it! It Y-v-o-n-n-e. Pronounced E-von. No one gets it right. My husbands family doesn't pronounce it correctly. When I was in my 20's a friend of mine said it unpronounceable if you look at it. He started calling me Evan. It stuck. In certain circles I"m still Evan. When I order something where they ask you your name I say Evan or use one of my kids names. Makes life easier that way. Now the issue of my last name it's a simply easy to pronounce name but my DH's family spells it the traditional German way so everyone always tries to put and i or a y at the end. I just say "no just e" To think I swore I would marry a man who's last name was easy to spell and pronounce. Maybe I went too easy :lmao: Then there's the having to spell the street that I live on but that's another story.

My name is Michele..one L not two. I have relatives who spell it wrong, people who have been my friends for over 50 years spell it wrong; my daughter-in-law, whose name is Michelle..two Ls not one..spells it wrong even thought we have joked about having the same name with different spellings. I sign things and they get typed up wrong..annoying sometimes but what can you do?

Yes, and it's very common so I don't understand it. My name is Jennifer and I go by Jen. With one n. People always seem to spell it Jenn. Since when is that common?

um - I'm so glad to have read this! ME TOO!!! I never saw Jen spelled "Jenn" until a few years ago! I hate when people do that. Also, I spell "Jennie" with the "ie", not "y" and one of my bosses REGULARLY emails me with "Dear Jenny". I always respond "thanks! Jennie" -- then make my name a font or two larger than everything else. :rotfl2:

I get "Rachael" all the time, rather than Rachel; it's like people are sticking the end of "Michael" to the beginning of Rachel for some reason. It's become a habit, when people ask my name, to say "Rachel, R-A-C-H-E-L". And sometimes that doesn't work either LOL

My daughter is Jen too, and she gets Jenn a lot as well ;)

Me me me... My name is Helene... NOT Helen that was my grandmother (actually 2 of them).. they are 2 totally different names! I automatically spell my last name.. Polish/Lithuanian I know people are going to butcher it.. I dont even tell them it when they ask I just go straight to letters

Yup. My maiden name too. My married name rarely gets misspelled so at least I only have to spell my first name.

Count me in - I'm Diana and you would think that after Princess Diana's name was all over the newspapers for years people would be able to get it right- but no - I get:

Diane (probably the most popular)
Dianna
Dianne
Deanne
Deanna
Dyanne
Dyanna
and Di (perhaps my least favourite)

My name is Katie...not that difficult, the only other spelling is Katy. But the problem is how I say it. I am from England and say Katie with an English accent: KAY-tee, pronouncing the T. Over here it seems to be said KAY-dee with a D sound. Whenever I say it, people hear Casey. When I sound it out, "Kay Tee" people tend to right down the initials KT instead. I've taken to saying my name in an American accent to avoid confusion!

My aunt and uncle actually spell my name Katy, not because they don't know how to spell it, but because they think that's prettier :confused3

I also can't seem to convince people that my given name is Katie, not Katherine or Kaitlyn or anything else, just Katie!

No one seems to know how to spell Valerie. I thought it was fairly common, but most often I get "Valarie" or "Valery," or a mixture of the two. :confused3

my name is valerie to! and i always get people who spell it valery especially down here in latin amierica ! it gets on my nerves :rotfl2:

People rarely spell or say my name correctly. I've just gotten used to it over the years. That is probably the reason all 4 of my children have common, easy to spell names.

I'm a "one-l" Michele. MY BFF from 5th grade still isn't sure how to spell it:confused3

I definitely gave the kids phonetically spelled names.:thumbsup2, and names you don't need an explanation with.

I don't think I've posted on this thread before but I sure should have. My mother decided to go with a different spelling for the name "Stephanie".

My name is Stefanee.

Try finding that on a little license plate for your bike back in the late 70s to early 80s.
