Do people actually EAT fruitcake?

I love fruitcake with a nice glass of wine.

Shoot anything with a nice glass of wine!! :flower1:

I love fruitcake. But, only homemade and only my husband's grandmother's recipe. I have to make about 10 of them every year for family members that request them.

I actually had a pretty yummy fruit cake a couple years ago! It was still very sweet and I couldn't eat much, but it was very moist and had a good flavor. But in general, I don't eat it.

My MIL had a really great fruit cake recipe that she passed on to me and I made it a few times years ago. It's very moist (made with wine) and doesn't use fruit peel, just the candied fruit, so it's not bitter at all. I haven't made it in several years, it was just getting so expensive to make.

I like fruitcake -but it has to be loaded with fruit and very moist. I like the one that looks like a Cracker Barrel Cheese loaf - can't remember the name. I don't like the ones that are round.

There are some very, very good fruitcakes out there. The ones my aunt makes are fantastic.

And there are some truly horrible fruitcakes.

I love fruitcake - only if made by my wife. It has to be moist, and it has to be full of candied fruit like citron and cherry. It has to have large hunks of stuff - like a whole half of a pecan, not just crumbs. It has to have just enough "cake" to hold the fruit together.

And did I mention moist? = That is no problem with my wife's fruitcake - I eat it before it has a chance to dry out.

Fruitcake in a tin can that comes by mail?? forget it - not worth opening.

LOVE fruitcake

I think fruitcakes are banned from some airlines. It seems there hard to pass through the x-ray machine.

I've bought it at a grocery store - YUCK!!!!

But we make it by scratch every year, and it's great - but only people who a "fruit cake worthy" are allowed to have any (it's really expensive to make.)

I LOVE good fruitcake. I've always liked it -- used to pick out and leave on the plate the things I didn't like when I was little. My father-in-law had a patient who gave him one every year that was the absolute best I've ever tasted. We threatened to not let him retire b/c of that cake.

cattlegazer -- You probably mean Claxton fruitcakes. I think those are pretty good but not on the level of the one the patient baked.

I love sultana & currant cake from our local supermarket. I don't like the heavy fruit cakes, like Wedding or Christmas cakes, that have a ton of ingredients like nuts, cherries, marzipan, thick icing, etc.

My step-mother makes it...I refuse to eat it. She says that it is raved about--so that must mean people eat it. But I'm not big into dried fruit (or dried cake ;) ) to even attempt to try it.

I love fruit cake. My mum makes lovely fruit cake which we traditionally eat with a slice of cheese (it is a tradition from where I was born and raised.) All my family and friends love fruit cake.

This topic made me laugh because my mother in law actually LIKES the stuff!

After reading this thread I got a craving for....................you guessed it!!!
Fruitcake. I just ordered one from the Collins Street Bakery in Corsicana, TX.
Now all I have to do is WAIT for it to be delivered sometime next week. I hope that it is as good as they say it is.

And I like FRUTCAKE! Please someone give me thier recipe as I would LOVE to make one this year! :D I want a nice moist one, with not too much fruit, thanks!

I have 2 recipes I like, but the one has very little to hold it together - mostly fruit.

This one is made as mini muffins - kind of 2 bites & you're done. You could cut back on the fruit if you think it will be too much. These are really good! :teeth:

Fruitcake Bon-bons
Yield: 70 minis
6 oz orange juice concentrate
½ c dark molasses
15 oz raisins (3 cups)
2 c candied fruit (reserve ½ cup for garnish)
1 c chopped dates
½ c butter
2/3 c sugar
3 eggs
1¼ c flour
1/8 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp allspice
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
1 c chopped walnuts

Combine orange juice, molasses & raisins. Cook on medium heat, stirring often to prevent sticking, until it boils. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in candied fruit (less ½ cup for garnish) & dates. Set aside.

Cream butter & sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Sift dry ingredients & stir into creamed sugar mixture. Add the orange juice mix and nuts. Mix well.

PoohBear, I have a great fruit cake recipe from Taste of Home magazine...my mom used to make it...I was just getting hungry for it...

Festive Fruitcake
1 cup Butter (no substitutes)
1 cup Sugar
3 Eggs, separated
2 Tablespoons Lemon Extract
1 1/2 cup Flour
1 1/4 cup Golden Raisins
1 1/4 cup Red and Green Candied Cherries, halved
1 1/2 cup chopped Candied Pineapple
2 cups Whole Pecans

Cream butter, sugar and egg yolks. Add lemon extract, mix well. Gradually add flour. Fold in fruit and nuts. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form, fold into batter and mix well. Spoon into a greased 10" tube pan lined with waxed paper. Bake @ 200 for 1 1/2 hours, increase to 250 and bake 1 hour, increase to 300 and bake 30 min. Remove from oven, cool completely in pan.

it's very good, a light colored cake, the only one I've ever liked!
