Do ALL things have souls?

I was debating abortion on a Catholic board and was told that ALL animals and plants have souls. (Needless to say I had to control my laughter at her claim, which she never backed up.)

So what you think? Do all things (animals and plants) have souls?

I don't believe they do. I believe that only humans were created (yes, created!) with souls.

I believe all humans have souls at the moment of conception but I do not believe that plants nor animals have souls.

I thought most Christians do not believe animals, much less plants, have souls. Doesn't having a soul allow you to have faith? Isn't that supposedly what makes us unique from other creatures?

Personally, I think animals may have souls! My furbabies definitely do! And it has nothing to do with their ability to believe in a higher power.

Really nice, you claim to be such a good person, yet you come here and ridicule another's beliefs. Unless and untill you are in total contol of all things great and small,you have no way of knowing or proving that anyone has a "soul". You have chosen to believe that humans do, yet there is no scientific proof, thus it is your faith that is your basis of belief. The person at whom you were laughing may have the same faith system, thus believing all living creatures have souls. I don't understand why you feel the need to laugh at someone's beliefs.

The answer to your question depends upon the the religion in which you believe. Buddhists would have a very different answer than the Christians. Which of the world's religions is correct? Time will tell.

First of all, the belief that plants and animals have souls is not a Catholic belief, so I don't understand why you're pointing out that the person is Catholic.

Second of all, I don't see what's so funny about the belief that all living things have souls. As someone pointed out, Buddhists do believe that. I don't relate to mocking other people for their religious beliefs.

Finally, I'm a Catholic (and as such, a Christian), and I believe animals have souls. I know lots of other Christians, Catholic and otherwise, who believe animals have souls. There's nothing ridiculous about it, IMHO.

She can't back her BELIEFS up any more than you can back your BELIEFS up.............because they are just religious BELIEFS. You can't prove or disprove them..............Remember..........God created the universe.............Man created religion..............

I'm going to say as a catholic I was'nt taught that.
I'm not sure but I think Buddhists believe all things have souls as well as alot of other religions, its their belief and faith and I would never laugh at someones beliefs, I actually find other religions fasinating.

Update: I was just reading online about buddhists and I dont think they believe all things have souls but they do try to avoid killing any living creature directly, which is why some but not all are vegeatarians.

I believe pets have souls.

That being said, I don't think I would laugh at anyone's religious beliefs. There are so many out there with such different beliefs, and no one can prove that their's is the correct one.

Unless one is vegetarian, it would be hard to justify everything as having a soul, wouldn't it?

In Buddhism, it states that the souls are passed on, even souls of trees or birds. Or a persons soull can go into a tree, after death. It's really unique.

I'm Catholic and have always been taught that only humans have souls. I remember being very sad by that because I wanted my wonderful dog to be in Heaven waiting for me.

I think animals have souls. Just look at their sweet eyes. This is the biggest problem I had at Christian school. My kindergarten teacher told me that animals don't have souls and my dog would NOT be going to Heaven with me. I was devastated.

I've never claimed to be a "good" person, just a forgiven one

The person at whom you were laughing may have the same faith system, thus believing all living creatures have souls. I don't understand why you feel the need to laugh at someone's beliefs.

Because the belief that plants and animals having souls is ludricrous in my eyes, and this person keeps on trying to convince me that plants and animals have souls. Animals? Maybe. Plants? No. People laugh at my beliefs that there are UFOs because they think that is a ludricous belief. Do I care? Nope.

Anyway, back to the question at hand. Do you believe that plants and animals have souls?
