I've never stayed at AKL before. How are the standard rooms. I've read that they have parking lot views. Do they have balconies? Is there a certain floor or area I should request? Any info would be great.

Zandy..........
We stayed in a standard room (savannah view) last fall, with bunk beds, and I was very pleased with the room. The bunk beds at AKL are "normal" sized twin beds, so my two 6 ft sons were quite comfy in them, and it gave us a lot of extra floor space. The bunks in WL are smaller for some reason. I'm sure there are bunks available in non-savannah view rooms also?? Hope that helps!
PS; We absolutely loved this resort and everyone in our party of 8 says we are staying there again next time! The food court was great, the animal views fantastic, and Boma is such a great experience.

Did you have a problem with mosquitoes when you went on the balcony?

Didn't see a bug! Not one problem. And no "animal odors" because they keep it so meticulously clean. You'll see the crews coming out several times a day feeding, cleaning, etc. But no bug issues what-so-ever. Now it was the first week of November, so that may have something to do with it...?
When are you going?

October 12. A couple of years ago we visited friends at AKL at night, in November and the mosquitoes were terrible when we went on their balcony.

We've stayed at AKL 3x now and absolutely love it! We've been in Sept, Nov, and Dec and are headed back Nov 30-Dec7th, staying concierge....we've NEVER had any problems with bugs>

I have stayed at AKL five times, during the months of November, January, April, and July (2x). I have never had a problem with bugs on the balcony or any other areas of AKL.

I decided to call back and request Ostrich Trail. Should I ask for a specific floor? I'm not sure I want to be below the lobby level, at least not on the first floor. Please give your opinions.

For those of you who have stayed in standard parking lot view rooms, where was your room? Did you like the location? FIL has a bad knee and would like to be close to buses, Mara, and the pool, but not at the expense of having a bad room. We don't want to be in a heavy traffic/loud area either. I also don't think I want to be on the first floor.

If I'm too specific about where I want to stay will that hinder my chances of getting a possible free upgrade. Has anyone ever gotten an upgrade when their reservations were linked with two other rooms?

I would love to get some opinions.

Zandy,

I have stayed at AKL many times, with many views. I think I can help you. One time we got a room overlooking the north side of the "port-o-cochere," and it was not terribly noisy, although the balcony was really funky. We did not have a standard balcony, but more like a cubby. It was weird. The room, hence, was very dark. That was the only complaint. I think if you want to be near the buses and face the parking lot, it won't be as noisy because we contended with those box trucks which haul all the luggage as part of the new program they started. The south side of the lodge is not as bad (near the buses).

Yes, I have been upgraded because they promised us non-smoking due to my son's asthma, and they had none available when we checked in except for a savannah view. And, with the FL resident rates, it was a steal.

You can't really "stay" on the first floor either. Technically, the lowest guestrooms available are on the third floor. All rooms are fully accessible via the elevators.

Good luck!

PS Fiance from Buffalo area. You?

I guess I'm kind of confused about the first floor. I read that the walkway to the buses is right in front of the first floor rooms. So, this isn't correct? Which floors in the Giraffe and Ostrich Trails have standard view guest rooms?

BTW, I'm originally from from East Aurora.

Hey,

I just wanted to say I am from the WNY area as well!!! We are staying at AKL in October at the end of ou trip and can't wait!!!

Hey

When you walk to the buses, there are absolutely NO guestrooms on street level. They are all above the street level. Technically, you walk into the lobby already on the first floor. The basement, if you will, houses the restaurants (Boma, Jiko, etc.). There is a mid-level which has a bar (Victoria Falls). So, that being said, even if you were to walk to your room, say just to the right of the giftshop, without climbing stairs, it is bringing you up beyond street level in a gradual slope. I am not sure which is Giraffe and Ostrich. I should know, shame on me, because I have stayed on both, but can't picture them. I do hope this helps.

By the way, my fiance lives in Salamanca.

The main lobby is on the second floor, officially. Man, I am really confusing you, aren't I? LOL

Actually, the Lobby is on the 3rd Floor. There are only a handful of rooms on the 1st floor. There are more on the 2nd floor, but I think most of those are Savannah View. You can see a map HERE that should help you to visualize it. :sunny:

Someone posted on another thread that AKL no longer offers bunk beds in standard rooms. Can anyone else verify this? :confused3 :confused3

I don't think I saw an answer to this question so I'll ask again - is there high speed internet service at AKL?
