Disney YES Program Open to non-groups

Thanks for the info! I re-did the signup and added all family names but only marked the two that would be attending class (myself and son). It allowed me to purchase 5 tickets. I was previously only entering the names of those attending the class thus the reason why it would only allow me to purchase 2 tickets.

Now to save this info for when it's time to go and we all require a ticket :disrocks:
Yeah!

This is awesome! I'll definitely look into it. Our dates are the 12th - 18th so the timing is perfect. I wish they had the animation class, but you know what they say about beggers and choosers! Do you know if other groups do this kind of thing too?

This is the only one that I know of. I read about here, on this thread. :goodvibes

I'm not sure, because I haven't done it yet. Google Carolina Homeschoolers Disney and the website will come up in the search results. I've looked around a bit on their site, and there's a lot of information there. :goodvibes

Please, _please_ don't sign up for that group unless you _actually_ homeschool your children. Space will run out and families who actually homeschool will not be able to participate. Don't ruin another family's chance at this program if you don't really belong in that group.

We homeschool. Our homeschool group schedules many wonderful classes, trips and experiences. We never limited anyone who is able to participate. If they do not homeschool but are able to participate, then they are included. Before you assume that this group limits other families from participating maybe someone should ask directly. Just a thought...:confused3

What a wonderful homeschool group. I am glad you mentioned it. We homeschol and would love to visit NYC in the future. Their trip seems like a perfect excuse to go sooner rather then later!!

We've already seen Disney cracking down on these programs due to people using it to get cheap tickets and then not showing up for the class. What do you think will happen to this group's program if the same thing happens to them? :confused3

None of the local groups around here limit participation to only homeschoolers either. We frequently have PSed friends or cousins along. However, we aren't talking about a local group here. Unfortunately, I've seen far too many people posting in this thread and other threads on the DIS that are only concerned with what they can get out of something and to heck with integrity.

If a nonhomeschooling family wants to go on their trip, at the very least, they should contact that group and ask if that is acceptable.

I emailed the YES people today and asked about November classes. The response I got was that they should be adding them mid-summer. So, it appears there will be some.

Love this thread...hope to sign my son (14) up for the photography class in October. Question that I didn't see an answer to here:

Do one of us need to attend the class with him? We've also got a 1 year old so I know we both couldn't go. I think my teen would prefer to NOT have a parent there to cramp his style.
:goodvibes

Thanks!

No, you don't have to attend if the child is 13 and older. I have 2 older kids and a 2 yr old. The older 2 will attend a class at Epcot while I take the baby to eat at Akershus.

I wondered about the ethics involved but on their site (not sure if I can post the link) it does state that they welcome non-homeschooling families and families from out of state, including Canada. They also mention that classes may be canceled for lack of enrollment, so I'm guessing they open it up to others to meet minimum group numbers for YES programs, hotel discounts, etc.

Glad you found something that addressed it. All I could find on their site was "Homeschoolers from other states and countries are welcome to join us. We enjoyed meeting homeschooling families from around the country and Canada on previous trips."

One important note on going through a group like this, there are restrictions on parents attending with their kids. "Parents will not be able to attend these programs with their children unless they are assigned as a chaperone. Disney programs allow one chaperone for every five students. Chaperone spots are assigned on a first-registered, first-served basis. If you're not one of the chaperones, you will not be able to attend the program. In that case, your child will be well-chaperoned by other homeschooling parents - we've never lost a child in the five years we've done these trips."

Thanks for posting that! I will anxiously await the dates! DD is interested in the animation class.

Will there be any classes from Sept 24th to Oct 2nd? I have some friends who want their son to attend a class. How soon do you think they might open the one Oct 3rd class that says "registration coming soon"?

ok, I have one more question... I was going to sign my kids up for Wild By Nature - not only because I thought that would be the most itneresting for them but also because it was for ages 7-15 and my kids happen to range from 7-15 so it would have been nice to have them all do the same class together....however that is now full for out dates in August. So now, if I sign them up for Ocean Discoveries which the age range is 8-15 - how does that work with my families tickets? Can I just put my older kids in the class I I chaperone them, while my husband takes the 7 year old somewhere else? and DO my husband and my 7 year old still qualify for YES tickets as immediate family?

Check with YES. Your 7 year old may be able to take the class. It seems they were only being rigid on the age for things like the chemistry class where there are safety concerns. That could have changed. If so, you can purchase tickets for husband and son even if he does not take the class.

I was just checking my confirmation numbers for my trip next month, and I'm afraid I screwed up! I have my older 2 kids booked in a class at Epcot starting at 8:30, and I made an adr for me and the baby at Akershus, at 8:30! I was thinking the clas was at 8:15. For those of you who have done this before, can I check them in for the class a little early, or do I need scrap the adr?

*****Just canceled it. No need worrying about something running late, and this one has a credit card guarantee. Oh well, she'd probably rather do Nemo and explore the Seas while we wait anyway:-)
