Disney Wonder to be homeported in Los Angeles

DCL pulled their application for Alaska about a month ago.. So they aren't going there at least not before 2012..

Actually, they pulled their application for a 10 year Glacier Bay National Park permit. They can still sail Alaska if they choose. It is also still possible for DCL to sail Glacier Bay, if any of the cruiselines that were awarded GB permits choose not to use all of their allotments, the NPS can award those to someone else. Exactly, what would have happened if DCL had been awarded a 10 year GBNPS permit, the 2010 season could have been used by others since DCL would not have been using it.

The shorter 3/4 night cruises also appeal to new cruisers. With 2 new larger ships to fill, DCL must attract new cruisers. The 3/4 night cruises are a way for some folks to try out DCL without a hefty investment.

For us this was true. Now, that I've gone on a 4 day, I wouldn't want to go on one shorter than a 4 day (unless it was a special offer) cruise...it just isn't enough time.

Also, the itineries are always the same. I wish the 4 day had somewhere else to go besides Nassau. I probably would not book with the new ships if they only did the 3/4 day cruises.

I don't know if it is even a consideration, but I'd love to see possible or occassional trips to Alaska in the summer. Maybe alternating? Just an idea....:thumbsup2 Cruising Alaska rocks, we'd love to do it on DCL now.

I, too, vote for Alaska! Will miss the Wonder on the East Coast, but would love to fly out west and sail to Alaska with her!!!!!!

YAY!!!!! See my one tag??? I'm getting my wish!!!

Haven't read the whole thread...but we got tired of waiting for DCL to go to Alaska and booked with NCL far cheaper and higher category than we could with Disney.....so I don't know that we'd do Alaska with them again, if they go.
Did the Mexican Riviera with Disney 3 times already.....

I'm hoping for HAWAII!!! I'll pay the Disney price for that!! :thumbsup2

I don't think it's even an option on the West Coast(a disney private island), those kinds of islands just don't exist out here like they do in the Carribean.

Actually, there are hundreds off the coast of Baja. Or they could do what RCCL did with Labedee on Haiti, just buy a stretch of isolated beach on the Baja Coast.

The only date I know is an ETA, of February 2011 for the first ship.

The ship AHEAD of the first Disney ship in the shipyard has a delivery date of September 2011 so not sure where the February 2011 date came from.

Which ship do you think is ahead of Disney Dream? The order books I am seeing are showing it like this:

CELEBRITY EQUINOX August 2009
CELEBRITY ECLIPSE June 2010
DISNEY DREAM Spring 2011
CELEBRITY UNNAMED (S. 678) Fall 2011
DISNEY FANTASY Spring 2012
CELEBRITY UNNAMED (S. 679) Fall 2012

I don't think I would like sailing on the West coast. There is no Castaway Cay and that is my favorite part of our Disney Cruises. Do you think there will be anything like that on the west coast at some point?

I just hope the prices aren't too much higher on the new ship for the 3/4 cruises. We like to do the 4 night, but I would do a 3 night just to see the new ship.

Can't wait!

Ooh I hadn't thought about that. Here I was thinking well we liked DL on our last trip- maybe sometimes we'd cruise out of CA instead of FL -but I don't think I like the idea of no castaway cay and hadn't even thought about that until you mentioned that! I don't think we'll be cruising out of CA because of this.
HOWEVER, if they'd put a ship based out of Galveston (where we could easily drive there and not have airfare or a super long drive like it is now to drive to FL- I'd consider cruising even if they weren't able to make CC on that cruise, although they should be able to. hehe The short drive would outweigh the CC in that case. But CA- is just as far for us as it is to FL- so no CC there... nope, we wouldn't do it. Unless they did repos but I highly doubt they'd do that. But wouldn't it be neat if they did do repos back and forth constantly? LOL pipe dream huh)

well this is bad news for me i was wanting the first new ship to take over the 7 night cruises. you know 3 and 4 night cruises are way too short. doing a b2b 3 and 4 night cruises is a lot more money than a plain 7 night cruise. disney will want and get a premium price for the 3 and 4 night cruises.

I don't know what credence you can put to it, but I believe I read somewhere that the Dream might be doing 4/5/4 over a two week period, instead of 3/4 over one...

It would need to be 5/4/5 to work out even in two weeks. 4/5/4 is only 13 days not the 14 needed for two week. Either way this would be better than 3/4.

When might 2011 sail dates (for either the Wonder or the Dream) be announced? And if the Dream is scheduled to set sail in 2011 (?February) what are the odds of that happening? I think I read that the Wonder (and maybe the Magic too) were delayed beyond their anticipated dates and that thewir maiden voyage had to be pushed back - yes?

I am currently debating if we should do a 4 night in April 2010 - in fact I had pretty much made up my mind - and now with this info I am wondering if we should wait for the Dream in 2011 - although I don't want to do a 7 night - the 4 night is perfect for us. So that is why I am hoiping to get some insight from the very knowledgeable folk in this thread. :flower3:

Hmmm...I just saw this tidbit - that's interesting!!

I have to say I am on your side on this one and was holding out all hope that it would be the Magic going to LA, and the Dreams taking over its route, that too me makes more sense.

However I was told in many PM's that Captain Henry was saying to a lot of people he gets the first ship and the Wonder is off to the West coast.

Now thinking about this with the Magic going through the Panama Canal four times to date and the experience of all those Panama and West coast posts of call you would think the magic would go.(Yes I know Panama pilots take the ship through the Canal and staff take orders, but my point is experience).

But the Wonder going is a clear signal that the Dreams takes over the 3/4 night cruises

Wouldn't that be a more profitable plan for DCL? It is more expensive on paper to do a 4-day and a 3-day than to do a 7-day. Plus the ship holds more people. I have no idea what turn-over cost is for DCL to port and re-load, but I would think they would still come out on top.
Is that right or am I confusing myself?:confused3

This is fantastic. Having DCL less than 3,000 miles away is going to be cool. Can't wait to see what the itineraries are going to be. DCL under the Golden Gate Bridge would be quite a sight.

That would be very exciting, I am in the bay area 40 minutes from San Francisco and 300 miles away from LA.

Can't wait!

Our first cruise was on the Magic so I feel a little attached to the Magic. As we are going on our 2nd cruise on the Magic in June, I am very happy we will have one of the ships here on the West Coast. And I am looking forward to (if the offer them) the California Resident discounts.
