This is so cool. I have to go to NYC for work at least once a week and my office is just a couple of blocks away from the Disney Store on 5th Ave. I know where I'll be going on my lunch hour!!!

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to Bring A Piece of Disney's Theme Park Magic to New York City

World of Disney to Open in October 2004

BURBANK, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The beloved Disney characters will have a new home away from home on New York City's historic Fifth Avenue.
Beginning October 2004, some of the most adored Disney characters will meet
and greet New York's residents and visitors every day.
The Disney Store located at 711 Fifth Avenue will close for renovations on
Thursday, May 13, 2004. The store will re-open in October with a new look,
new product offerings, and a new name -- World of Disney. Like its
counterparts at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and at the
Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, the World of Disney will be operated
by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts merchandise team.
"The Walt Disney Company has a long-standing commitment to New York City,
and as a native New Yorker I am particularly proud to reaffirm that
commitment," said Jay Rasulo, President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We
are dedicated to making the World of Disney location on Fifth Avenue a
flagship statement for our organization."
The new World of Disney on Fifth Avenue will offer uniquely Disney
entertainment experiences throughout the day, and will include Disney characters. The World of Disney will also feature one-of-a-kind merchandise
offerings including New York City-specific fashions.
"We are thrilled to bring Disney storytelling, entertainment and a taste
of our world-famous theme park experience to New York City," said Rasulo. "We
anticipate that the World of Disney will become a magical destination in the
midst of the Big Apple."

We have heard rumors that similiar stores are planned for Chicago, Las Vegas and Honolulu. I guess when they sell the Disney Stores a few cities will still be the real Disney.

That is terrific news. Hope they do it in more locations:earsboy:

If they do decide to expand, I would think Chicago and Las Vegas might be logical choices. Chicago, as you know, is the birthplace of Walt Disney, and they did have a DisneyQuest for a while, and still have an ESPN Zone downtown. Las Vegas?? Well...it's Las Vegas. That's all that needs to be said. Honolulu might be a stretch, but with the success of Lilo and Stitch and the tourism there, I wouldn't rule it out.

Slowly, but surely, some of the Disney stores have been bringing more adult things in such as shirts and jackets. I know our local store in Orland Park has had more of a selection of shirts than in the last couple of years. I yearn for the days, however, when you could find a great deal more than just t-shirts.

I"m a bus ride away and can"t wait for it to open.....

Continue to watch the stores over the next month for ALOT more adult product. We are discontinuing all infant product, but explanding the adult offerings.

We just got in new 3/4 sleeve baseball style t shirts, in Mickey, Grumpy, Eeyoure, and STITCH. Very nice.

:D

I found out about this last week when I had asked if anyone had heard the rumor. I got the phone # to TDS and asked if it was true. The lady told me that they would be re-opening as the World of Disney on October 4. I think it will be pretty cool. My girlfriend and I were going to go there next week weh nwe go into the city to celebrate our anniversary, but I guess we'll have to cancel that and find something else to do.

Now they are getting more adult merchandice. .

I just found out yesterday, the Disney Store close to us just closed. My DH was there 2 weeks ago purchasing AP vouchers. I went there on Saturday and it'a all boarded up. The Sunday paper had an article about it closing

I don't like the idea one bit. Part of what makes the Magic Kingdom and DL so special is the moment you first see Mickey Mouse shaking hands and hugging guests. If, eventually, we can see him at stores in NYC, Chicago, Boston, Houston etc etc etc it just will not make it as special. Maybe in 10 years every city will have Mickey and Co. greet the locals. This is the start of something not so great in my opinion.

I think that this is an excellent idea! People come to NYC from all over the world, and many different companies have very unique stores and experiences in NYC. I love TDS, but they were lacking "merchantainment" as I believe they call it in WDW & DLR. Now this will be a unique experience for all guests who come to the store, just hopefully this won't end because of cost cuts or anything like that. I don't think that going to the WOD in NY will ruin it for me in Florida. I could see them only doing this in NYC, Chicago, and Las Vegas. I don't see them building too many more of these WOD stores, so I still see it as a special thing.

BTW, does anyone have any construction photos of the new WOD?
