OK That's it! We need a new camera!!!! :lmao: There is no way that we could possibly take the quality of pictures with our little camera. Thank you everybody and keep them coming!!!!!! Seriously though, if anyone has any suggestions for purchasing a new camera please pm me. My DH and I would appreciate all of the help that we can get! :rotfl: Thanks! :yay:

After seeing some of these shots I may have to break down and put a fisheye lens on my wish list.

I am going to assume you are talking point and shoot? And as I am also looking to upgrade, mainly because I want that razor edge sharpness I see in the really kick your butt photos, I have done a LOT of research over the last few months.

And just recently, a new 'generation' of cameras has been released- and maybe some even after my last exploration, but this is the top bunch as of a couple of weeks ago. Have heard rumors of a new Panasonic...

Note that one thing I learned is that it is NOT just the lens, it is the sensor! And one of these P&S cameras is using a sensor normally only found in a DSLR. The other thing I look for is format and capacity for vid. Also, what type of batteries- it is much easier if it uses double A's, but note that one of these- forget which, uses double A's BUT will NOT use rechargeable double A's! How that happens, I have no idea!

I read lots of reviews, and then DL sample pics usually from Steves and I find that quite often the two do not match: I go with the sample pics.

Top 5 by CNet Australia;
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
***Canon PowerShot SX1 IS*** (My choice at the time)
Nikon Coolpix P90
Olympus SP-590 Ultra Zoom
Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR

Another group I looked at on Amazon and noted since then is:

Fujifilm FinePix HS10 10 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 30x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 3-Inch LCD Buy new: $499.95
Nikon Coolpix P100 10.3MP CMOS Digital Camera with 26x Wide Angle Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" LCD (Black) Buy new: $399.95
Olympus PEN E-PL1 12.3MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens (Black) Buy new: $599.99
Nikon (Pocket) Coolpix S8000 14.2MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" High Res LCD (Black ) Buy new: $299.95
Nikon Coolpix L110 12.1MP Digital Camera with 15x Wide Angle Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" LCD (Black) Buy new: $279.95

Note with the Canon you must be VERY careful with the exact model name as they have several that are very close, varying by only a digit and it makes a LOT of difference!!!

Happy hunting!

:)

Jud,

I for one would be very interested in your search and eventual purchase of a new camera. I too would like to upgrade my camera. I am not wanting to go full professional DSLR but I would like a little more that the Canon P&S I have. Keep us informed :thumbsup2

Hehehehe... Well, you can see my post quoted on page 51 for what I have.

I also want to point out a couple of things that one should keep in mind with great emphasis.

The best camera in the world is not going to get you good pictures: the picture comes from you. If you can't get a good picture out of the cheapest camera, you are not going to get it out of the most expensive with all the extra lenses and filters in the world.

And, a lot of the 'punch' you are getting out of some of the photos here also have nothing to do with the camera, but with editing programs- and that is a whole nuther set of skills and talent and again, having the program does not equal results.

And third, I should identify the parameters of my new camera search: first, I want a P&S because I do not want to have to mess around with settings and lenses and filters- I just want to shoot- I like the candid shot. I used to shoot with a pocket instamatic- all my earlier posted 1973 shots of MK were from a Kodak Pocket 40. I always carried it and was ready to shoot at a moment's notice. Later, I was given an SLR and shortly thereafter I simply stopped shooting for years- it was simply too complicated.

I LOVE my Olympus C-740 Ultra zoom but it reacts too slow (shutter lag) and it doesn't have the sharpness I want and envy, so I am looking to improve on those two points. And related to that, I recently learned that with a digital camera, the sensor is as important to that as the lens, so one 'go' button for my next P&S is having the better sensor usually only found in a DSLR.

Then, I want good video- with sound and without time limits. One of my early cameras would only shoot 10 second clips- you wouldn't believe how many runs I made on Test Trak to get the vid!

And finally, I greatly prefer, but do not require, that it be powered by double A's, as opposed to a propitiatory battery.

Hope this helps! Your needs/wants may be quite different and the price-point I am looking at is close to that for a starter DSLR, so for some that might be a preference.

Thanks! We have already had some great shots (Alaska, rain forest, Disney, etc) with a point and shoot camera, but...I like your pictures!!!! :woohoo: I can't get the vivid colours of the fireworks or even to shoot the fireworks properly. They just don't look right! :confused3 Some of the pics on here should be in magazines- seriously! I also like the wide angle lens pics. But most importantly the colours- absolutely beautiful! :lovestruc I am too busy to take a class, but appreciate any advice given. Thanks to all of you that have been nice enough to give me some assistance- I really appreciate it! :3dglasses

Thank you. BTW, I love (and totally agree with) your last tag line! :)

Fireworks are tricky, but two different tricks I have used to overcome the limitations of my P&S are 1) to set for flash- it quickens the exposure; and 2) and more successful, set for fixed focus to infinity, set for multiple exposures, and shoot three or four at a time. The first one will be trash, but the rest go with that setting and often come out good.

VERY seldom have I succeeded in getting the colors of the bursts to register. Digital is especially weak on low light situations by nature and fireworks are possibly one of the most trying of shooting situations.
