OK- I needs some advice. After seeing your beautiful pictures I would like to upgrade our family camera. Any suggestions on what I should purchase? I am looking at the $200-500 dollar range. Thanks! Joanne

I am going to assume you are talking point and shoot? And as I am also looking to upgrade, mainly because I want that razor edge sharpness I see in the really kick your butt photos, I have done a LOT of research over the last few months.

And just recently, a new 'generation' of cameras has been released- and maybe some even after my last exploration, but this is the top bunch as of a couple of weeks ago. Have heard rumors of a new Panasonic...

Note that one thing I learned is that it is NOT just the lens, it is the sensor! And one of these P&S cameras is using a sensor normally only found in a DSLR. The other thing I look for is format and capacity for vid. Also, what type of batteries- it is much easier if it uses double A's, but note that one of these- forget which, uses double A's BUT will NOT use rechargeable double A's! How that happens, I have no idea!

I read lots of reviews, and then DL sample pics usually from Steves and I find that quite often the two do not match: I go with the sample pics.

Top 5 by CNet Australia;
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
***Canon PowerShot SX1 IS*** (My choice at the time)
Nikon Coolpix P90
Olympus SP-590 Ultra Zoom
Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR

Another group I looked at on Amazon and noted since then is:

Fujifilm FinePix HS10 10 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 30x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 3-Inch LCD Buy new: $499.95
Nikon Coolpix P100 10.3MP CMOS Digital Camera with 26x Wide Angle Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" LCD (Black) Buy new: $399.95
Olympus PEN E-PL1 12.3MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens (Black) Buy new: $599.99
Nikon (Pocket) Coolpix S8000 14.2MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" High Res LCD (Black ) Buy new: $299.95
Nikon Coolpix L110 12.1MP Digital Camera with 15x Wide Angle Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0" LCD (Black) Buy new: $279.95

Note with the Canon you must be VERY careful with the exact model name as they have several that are very close, varying by only a digit and it makes a LOT of difference!!!

Happy hunting!

ejud,

I recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 and all the photos I'm posting here are from that camera. One thing I learned about posting here is much of the sharpness in the posting is based on how I save the photo into my photobucket acct. I don't have the pro account, so that might even make a difference.

So far with the FZ-35 I am happy with the photos, but I still have a lot to learn. I'm a total newb when it comes to having a decent (definitely not a pro type camera) camera.

Another area that I have to learn a lot of is editing. I look at many of the photos here and I can tell they have been edited quite heavily, however that's what you need to do to get those killer shots.

I'm actually running out of photos to post, so good thing I'll be heading to Disneyland in a month or so.

I like this one so much it's on my mousepad. :goodvibes
