Disney Picture of the day Part 6

Mine just got here yesterday. Canon A630. 8 MP. It is way more camera than I need, but I am just tickled to pieces about it.
We were playing with it all last evening.
I also got a 1 Gig memory card. I am thinking between dd's camera and mine, we should have plenty pics of WDW to share. :goodvibes

I will probably ask this on the photo board, but any opinions on what to set the pic quality at.
I lowered it to M2 - which is supposed to support a 5 x 8 enlargement, and the 2 higher choices support a 8.5 x 11 and a 16 x 23 (the best possible).
Am I crazy to think that for snapshot photo albums that the 5x8 would be plenty enough to allow for cropping?

This is all new to me, but I am really excited of the possibilities.

No! Absolutely use all of your MP. The higher the pixel count (resolution), the better your crops will be (especially close crops).

Also, don't make the mistake of not taking full advantage of your optical (NOT digital) zoom. This will help with cropping even more. You have 4X optical zoom, use it. Just make sure you turn the digital zoom OFF. Digital zooms are worthless; I don't even know why they put it on the camera.

So this is not to say zoom everything in 4X. Just don't waste space with emptiness (i.e. stuff on the sides, top & bottom that you don't care to be in the picture). Does this make any sense? Utilize your zoom…

If you’re worried about running out of pictures, get another 1 GB card or a couple for that matter… they’re pretty cheap these days. Also, don’t be afraid to instantly delete the pictures that you KNOW don’t turn out. Leave the ones that are iffy on there, because sometimes they surprise you.

Hope this helps you...

Realizing this may not be the place for this discussion, but I gotta ask - what's the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom?

I agree with this 100%. Digital zoom is pretty much a waste of time. I never use digital zoom at all. In fact, I turned it off on my Camera the day I bought it.

Hopefully this explains it: optical vs digital zoom

Basically, in a nutshell, digital zoom is the camera's way of digitally cropping, the same as you would do post processing (photoshop). So if you zoom as far as your optical zoom will take you, and you still want to get closer, it's better to do it by way of cropping with image editing software for better accuracy and control.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my Nemo and his family picture ;) We thought that was pretty cool how they just kept swimming around and around in that tight little cluster.
