Disney pediatricians? Weekend hrs?

I have a baby who gets ear infections frequently. During our last vacation he got sick on the weekend and I had to scramble to find a ped with weekend hrs. and our insurance (I prefer not to take him to the ER). Lessons learned -I try to have doctor information before I travel just in case.

Does anyone know where I can easily find this info on WDW? I performed a search here and didn't see what I was looking for. With all the info that exists I can't imagine there isn't information on medical care options.

If it is that frequent and you know what to look for would your own ped be willing to RX a prescription for a just in case issue?

They have express medical services in Kissimmee there (I'm not sure of their number or location though). I would take him to your ped before hand and then have him write a prescription for you to take with you. Especially if they know your child gets them a lot - I know mine would give me one. (Hoping mine doesn't get one either before we go next week!)

When my DS was 5, he got sick while we were at WDW. We took him to the Centra Care clinic near Gooding's supermarket in the Downtown Disney area. We have Blue Cross insurance, which they accepted. The doctor we saw was great and I wouldn't hesitate to go there again if one of us got sick.

If that doesn't work for you, maybe your insurance co can give you a list of possible providers in the WDW area?

I second the idea of getting the prescription before hand. Is it an option to get the prescription filled beforehand, just in case? (keeping it in a cooled insulated lunchbag with ice packs?)

Another vote for asking your doctor for an Rx ahead of time. And just b/c I'm nosy, how many infections has he had and how old is he? On my mom board, several babies/toddlers have gotten tubes and it's worked wonders for them!

we had to have a prescription filled while at ASMovies resort 2 years ago, and were able to have it delivered to the hotel for us. I think the pharmacy name was Turner Drugs. They even sent a medicine dispenser with it so we could dispense the appropriate dosage. The front desk at your hotel should be able to give you the phone #. I would think your ped could call one in to them if you needed it, and they could deliver it to your hotel. Maybe call your ped and ask if he/she would be comfortable with that?

Now, I haven't read the fine details, but when I was talking to WDTC earlier this week making our reservations, the CM said their travel insurance will even cover a dr coming to your hotel room if needed. Again, I haven't read the details, but that might be something worth looking into at the very least! I hope you don't need it though and have a happy, healthy vacation!

I took my kids to centra care when they were younger. Both had ear infections on the trip. The DR. was really good-much better than the ones at our Urgent care here. I was able to get the prescriptions filled at the supermarket next door and we also got a ride on the centra care van since we were onsite with no car. Our youngest also went there with tonsillitus a few years later and had great care. They even picked us up at MK. The wait time was short, too.

Although I'm right 90% of the time when I suspect an ear infection, the symtpoms are very similar to teething and I'm not comfortable diagnosing and treating him with antibiotics on my own (and I don't think his ped. would be either).

For the pp who asked, he's 7 months old and has had 4 bouts with ear infections. He's only had 2 colds that have not morphed into infections. He's a pretty sheltered baby so the chances of him getting sick between the travel, visit with extended family and Disney trip are high. I'd just like to be prepared in the event I need to have his ears checked.

wow, four infections in 7 months? Whew. I think I'd be bugging the doctor about tubes. Most of the moms on my mom board with kids who have tubes had similar problems where a cold would morph into an ear infection every single time. Just might be something to pick your dr's brain about.

Question for you, not sure if discussed on other board. My daughter is now 4 1/2 years old and is still getting bad ear infections. I was told she is too old for tubes. What do parents do for an older child?

Hmm...I have no answer to that b/c most of the kids on my mom board are 5 & under. I think the oldest age for tubes on there was about 2.5ish. But I can ask. I'll let you know!

I think 7 months is a bit too young to get tubes, and that may be why the OP's son has had several infections but not been offered tubes yet. My son was 13 months when he got tubes in, and he never had another issue with ear infections. As for older kids, I'm not positive, but I think there may be some adenoid/tonsil surgery that provides some relief. I'd ask for a referral to an ENT if it were my child.

OP, I second the advice of the PP who suggested you contact your insurance company. Someone there should be able to tell you who they prefer you to use. That'll help to make sure you stay in network and aren't charged out the wazoo. I also think it's a good idea to do as another said, and make nice with the front counter at your resort to get their input on who to call.

Hehe, long time lurker around here. Don't say much, but babies with ear infections are just so darn miserable I had to chime in.

My DD4 has and appointment with an ENT for next month but I was hoping to prepare myself before the appointment. She had a different ped for the first 3 years of her life and he never diagnosed them. New ped is finding them, you can't miss them because her personality is completly different.

As for getting a prescription onsite, DON'T use Turner Drugs. I repeat DON'T USE TURNER DRUGS!!!! Hire a taxi to take you to CVS. We used Turner 2 years ago for a script that normally costs $5 through insurance. Turner takes NO insurance and they want you to lay out the money up front. My insurance said they would pay what ever they billed me but even my insurance company would not pay their bill. They charged me $287 for the same script that I have a $5 copay on. My insurance only repaid $185 which they said was the maximum that should ever be charged for that antibiotic. They called Turner Drugs a bunch of crooks.

We had an antibiotic filled at Turner Drugs, and it only cost about $4 or $5 more than we would have paid at home. I'd rather pay the $4 or $5 bucks and have it delivered.
