Yes, they are used to keep the charms on, as well as being used to help put it on by yourself. I don't have an issue putting one on without the chain, and prefer my bracelet without the chain.
There are two other ways of "securing" your beads, one is better than the other. The first way is to put a tighter fitting "screw on" bead closest to the opening. This isn't a sure bet as it can still come off. The second way, which is what I do, is to put a "clip" bead right next to the opening. The clips are smaller and will not slip off over the treading at the opening of your bracelet. With the clip right there, no beads have ever come off my bracelet. I hope that make sense; in other words I have 3 clips on my bracelet; Two on the normal spots on the threaded parts of the bracelet and one extra on the bracelet up closest to the opening.
Makes perfect sense. Thank you! I like the clip idea best. I haven't seen a safety chain yet that I like. I don't think I'd want one on my bracelet.
