Would converting a Target e-gift card to a physical Target gift card protect me from being drained? I was going to wait to convert my gift cards in case they ran the buy 2 get $5 offer again, but I have one $300 e-gift card that I purchased with Target gift cards. Would I need to convert it to Disney to protect it? If I went into a store and used the e-Targe gift card to buy a physical Target card, could Target track the purchase and drain the physical card?

ALERT: for anyone holding a Target egift card purchased with a Target gift card during the 10% off promo. Reports online that these cards have been/are being drained by Target. More info: http://www.doctorofcredit.com/target-draining-e-gift-cards-purchasedrolled-online-recent-10-promo/
ETA: claims are Target reps are saying they won't refund the original payment. Shaping up to be a mess, I hope no one here is caught in this!
Thanks for the warning! :thanks:

I'm so sorry idk! I didn't see any reports of physical gift cards being drained yet fwiw but I have no idea how their system works. I'd convert to physical gift card at minimum.

Wow that's crazy. I can see they refunding the purchase to the original card for saying people abused the promo but I am shocked if they can legally withhold the $270 from the original gift card.
Yeah. I'm wondering if some Target lawyer is gonna get wind of this when they come into work Mon and be like "we did WHAT?!"

An in-store Target card was reported drained on twitter! Now I'm freaking out. I had no plans to transfer these to Disney gift cards (we're not going to Disney anytime soon), we're using them for groceries, Xmas purchases etc.

Is it only people who got a filler item?

I think we will have to wait and see how the Target gift cards play out. I wouldn't worry about the physical gift cards yet based on one person's report. I'm not sure what Target is trying to accomplish; I read the terms of their 10% off offer and it did not have any exclusion of purchasing a gift card with a gift card. And it's not like they didn't know it was going to happen, as people did the same thing last year. So everyone just breathe calmly until this all plays out.

Honestly I've come to the conclusion IT tried to close the gift card to gift card loophole and screwed up majorly & weekend customer service is at a loss.

Just converted $200 of my physical cards to disney. Needed $25 cards for the rest, so I'll try that at another target tomorrow.

Report of Target GCs bought online with other Target GCs being drained panicked me, so we went out in a snowstorm even though we weren't planning on it. We were able to convert my $300 Target eGiftcard to Disney giftcards this evening. The first store only had $100 in Disney giftcards and told me I had to have them rung up at Guest Services. Guest Services said I couldn't buy giftcards with a Target GC so I told them to call a manager. The manager replied via radio that it was OK. I went to another nearby Target and converted the rest without any problem at all in the regular checkout line.

It happened to me. I had an order with a filler item and I forgot to pick up the filler and the whole thing was cancelled.

Any order from target that is for in-store pickup has to be picked up otherwise they cancel and refund the money.

I wonder if this is what's happening. On Slickdeals, I saw some people suggesting adding a filler item for order pickup to get Target GC>Target GC to work, and then not picking up the filler so that portion of the order will get cancelled and cost them nothing. If the entire order is getting cancelled, that's unusual but might explain the new Target GC getting "drained" or "cancelled." But I wonder if a gift card can get drained or "cancelled" once some portion of it has already been spent.

P.S. I've noticed quite a few $300 denomination Target GCs on reseller sites like Raise. I'm guessing some people are cashing out after the big sale. But if this draining news is true, I'd be very wary of buying Target GCs on reseller sites right now.

Usually only that portion of the order is cancelled and refunded. Not the delivered or picked up portion.

My gift card was emailed to me. It's now invalid. When I saw that refunded the filler item I wasn't too upset but I looked at the refund more closely tonight and saw at the bottom they also refunded the gift card that was delivered within a couple hours of ordering it. I have not checked to see if my credit card has been refunded yet. I assume it has. Too bad. I received Ebates on the whole order.

Why did you order a filler item if you were paying with a credit card?

Not my experience. The first time it happened I ordered some Lysol wipes with a free $10TGC. I actually picked up the wipes and was waiting for the promo GC to come in. Next thing I knew the entire order was cancelled because they forgot to log it in that the items were picked up. (It actually worked in my favor cause I got to keep the wipes which were more than $10)
Another time I forgot to pickup the item in time and all got cancelled- even the stuff that was supposed to ship. Got my money back within a couple of days.

If it did work on portion of the order like you say- then maybe they fixed that and the entire thing gets cancelled unless you pick up in time.

Hope all get their money refunded.

So just to share an experience I had with a target.com cancelled order recently. I made a merchandise purchase late one night using a target gift card. I got the email confirmation immediately but when I actually reviewed it the next day I realized it had an incorrect shipping address. I clicked the link in the email to view the order details and hopefully cancel the order before it shipped. Apparently something went wrong on the website when I placed the order as the confirmation email I received contained the correct item info but listed the shipping name/address and confirmation/order # from a previous order. I assumed the order never went through but the funds were gone from my gift card. I called target.com immediately and spent a rather lengthy time on the phone talking with two different people who could see no record of the latest online order. Finally they transferred me to gift card services who was able to track the usage of my gift card. The lady explained that there was a website glitch which resulted in a cancelled order but when that happens the funds are temporarily frozen. She immediately released them so I could place a new order but she said if I hadn't realized and called the refund would have eventually posted back to my gift card within a few days.
My point is that the customer service reps telling people the will not receive a refund to their original gift card due to "promotion abuse" may simply be misinformed. The gift card department told me when an online order is cancelled the money is not immediately released to the gift card used for payment. This was never conveyed by either of the target.com specialists so perhaps they are unaware of the delay with gift card refunds.
