Disney Cruise Line v. Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas comparison

Really? My malls are prettier. It looks like a mall. There's nothing wrong with it looking like a mall but come onView attachment 241152

Haha, yes that Mall is pretty :)
We have some really nice looking Malls where we live too. Anthem didn't seem feel like a Mall to me, but generally Royal has some kind of a "promenade" on every ship that groups shopping and cafes, bars etc - so in that regard it is like a Mall. Regardless of what it looks like, it is an impressive space. I won't say I like it better than DCL but it's not a deal breaker to me.

Woh. That's a nice mall. I don't think I've ever seen a pretty mall like that in all the cities I've ever lived in.

Like, I never got over how pretty Prudential Center in Boston was when I visited it... I find it so pretty I could actually live there (and I HATE shopping with passion).

Yep it's a really nice mall, King of Prussia Mall - biggest one on the east coast. I don't think it's terrible to look like a mall, I am surprised it looks like that though. I feel like when I watch Dream Cruises show the insides don't look like a mall? Speaking of which... my 5 year old kept asking to go to the "mall" on the our last cruise and I had no idea what she was talking about until I figured out she meant the shopping stores near the WD Theater :).

Interesting feedback on the food OP - good to know the service is great in the MDRs

It seems like the review is consistent with what others said, it's probably an equal experience between DCL and RCCL if you're an adult but perhaps for the kids it is an edge up if you are on DCL.

OP any thoughts on adult only sections of RCCL?

Just a general observation/comment on the concept of "Nickel and Diming" - so it does seem like you have to "pay" for a lot more on RCCL in terms of all of those different food choices and I can see how that would feel like being nickel and dimed however I suppose when you consider the price of the overall trip vs DCL, you probably end up still spending less $$ overall on the RCCL experience. So I suppose it would just have to be a change of mindset as one heads into RCCL. Just trying to begin to adjust my own thinking as I consider another line because personally I'd find it annoying to be constantly pulling out my wallet for the basics that you don't have to pull a wallet on when on DCL (I personally didn't like this when we were at WDW, I missed the "just grab it" environment on DCL).

I'm not the OP, but I can share my experiences with the Solarium (adult pool area) of the Radiance Class ships. It is indoors with a glass cover. Generally I saw it pretty well enforced pool-wise and lounge-chair-wise. But there is a cafe that anyone can get food from and there is always debate about if kids are allowed to sit at the tables there and eat or if they need to leave - and I never heard a definitive answer from anyone with any true clout.

In the event of inclement weather (or I guess in theory if the all-ages pool was closed s/he could make that call as well), the captain can decide to allow children under 16 in there - which removes any adult-only pool area. Also, in Alaska, there are a couple of hours each morning where under 16s are allowed regardless of weather conditions outside. (Plus...Alaska you're going to have a lot more chance for weather that would prompt the captain to allow kids.) It's just something to be aware of - that on Radiance Class ships (I have no experience with their other ships, so I don't know how they work it is not necessarily adult (16+) 100% of the time.

For the food, I find it to be the exact same thing as DCL having Palo and Remy... With RCCL having more than two options, and a lot of them being more affordable than Palo & Remy.

Does it feel like though that there is some sort of free food you can just grab when you're hungry without thinking about paying for it? I remember at our all inclusive in Aruba, the all day until 2am pizza oven came in handy when folks got hungry, just like the convenience factor of free food when you want it - sounds like windjammer is one of the only options? What about room service? is that free or relatively cheap and is it 24 hour?

On Anthem, other than Windjammer there was: Café Two70, Café Promenade, Dog House, Sorrentos Pizza and Solarium Bistro that would meet this criteria. All included.
Sorrentos Pizza was open until 3 am and the Doghouse until 1 am. Café Promenade was open 24 hrs a day.
If you were in a suite or were like a "DCL Gold castaway equivalent" you also had access to other places with food, but I can't really comment as we were not in a suite.

Room service has a charge of $7.95 per order, but the menu is more extensive then on DCL. Continental breakfast is included though - coffee, tea, cereals, yogurt, pastries, muffins, fruit etc.
I was going to write about room service too, but all we got was the included continental breakfast.

oh ok so that's actually quite a list of included, no-charge, places to eat, not bad.... for clarification - are you saying continental breakfast room service is free? That's not bad considering that is what we're used to since we can't order hot breakfasts with DCL... thanks to you both!

Yes continental breakfast from room service is free.
In my post on dining I also reviewed what was included in terms of food.

We had plenty of space on the Allure - more than we used! Plenty of drawers, cubbies, closet space, etc. Our room was always tidy! :-)

Totally agree. I loved the built in shelving on Allure in the closets...and tons of shelves and cupboards in the washroom. really impressed with storage. Not sure if all Royal ships are like this.

Sorry missed this... Anthem has an INCREDIBLE adults only Solarium area - I will review this shortly and post a few pics ;)

I asked a friend of mine today which kids club her kids prefer and she said RCCL because of the more staff interactions, as a result they had more adult free time on the ship.... interesting

I was going to do drinks next, but since pools were mentioned, let's talk pools on Anthem of the Seas. There really is no comparison.

Anthem of the Seas is a newer ship so it has Royal's latest and greatest, but it also is a ship that sails out of NYC even in the winter, and they really thought of that. Disney also sails out of NYC during the Fall, sails to Alaska and to colder European destinations. Yet at this time none of their ships are set up in a way where you can enjoy the pool areas in case of inclement weather. I'll be curious to see what they do with their new ships.
Anthem's pools are on deck 14 and there are several of them.

Let's start by saying that all Royal ships now have lifeguards. DCL used to be the only one.
Lifejackets for the kids are provided by the pools, 2 sizes same as DCL.

The outdoor pool area on Anthem has a large pool, an H2O splash zone for the wee ones in swim diapers, a circular lazy river type pool, and 2 hot tubs. There is a height requirement for the lazy river circular pool, I believe 48 inches. My DS lived in this pool as it swirled him round and round, great fun. All pools are heated.
There is a huge movie screen by the outdoor pool, similar to Disney's funnel vision.
But it was a bit disappointing because they never played any movies on it during the day. Only shore excursion ads, or some other Royal Caribbean facts etc. Occasionally sports. At night they did have outdoor movies at 7, then around 9:45. The first movie was intended for children, for example they played Moana one day.
The pool areas even had kid-size chair loungers.
Of course there is a pool bar called the Sky Bar and you could go up one deck to the North Star bar right above it. In the absence of anything interesting on the movie screen, I found myself watching the North Star go up and down. North Star is a pod that takes you for a ride 300 feet above the ocean. More on that later.
During sailaway from NYC and from Bermuda, they had a great live music band playing, as well as some other staff-led activities like a dancing contest, belly-flop contest etc. Belly-flop contest I believe happens on all Royal ships. NOT something you will ever see on Disney ;)

From the outdoor pool, you walked through glass-sliding doors to the next one which is a pool under a retractable glass roof. This area has a large pool, a smaller wading pool next to it, and 2 more hot tubs.
There is also another pool bar creatively named "Pool Bar".
During our sailing the outside temps were low to mid 70's so the glass roof was closed, but the side windows of the indoor pools were often open to let in the breeze. I was told by the bartender when it's really hot they retract the roof.

It was great to know that no matter what the weather, one could enjoy the pool area and with the glass roof you don't feel like you're at local community indoor pool.

From indoor pool walk over to the Adult-Only Solarium, also under retractible glass roof. It is pure bliss and relaxation, although a couple of times it did get crowded. Get there early as it's popular.
There are 3 tiers of pools here with water spilling over from the heighest to lowest. Couple of huge hot tubs right next to the glass walls.
Of course another pool bar called the "Sunshine Bar". Solarium also has a bistro serving healthier options such as smoothies, salads and other healthy meals. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it's included in the cruise fare.
The Solarium is all the way at the front of the ship offering incredible views of the ocean.
We often found people sleeping in the Solarium on huge wicker loungers.

While Anthem beats Disney swimming pools and it's not even close, Disney does some things better in my opinion:

- Pool towels. Each pool on Anthem has an area where you check-out as many towels as you like using your SeaPass card. There was never a line here, but it was a bit of a pain. If you don't return the towels by end of the cruise you are charged $25 each. Were guests walking off with these towels?

- Soft serve ice cream. Anthem has it too, but it's 2 or 3 flavours at a time only and not open all day like on Disney. It was open from I believe 11-5?

- Pool-side quick service. Nothing like what DCL has on Anthem. There is Johnny Rockets burgers by the outdoor pool, but it's an extra charge. Then there is the Solarium Bistro, but it's not a place you can grab a slice of pizza or a hot-dog. Sometimes between swims all you want is a slice of pizza without having to walk over to the Windjammer Buffet (assuming it's open) or Sorrento's pizza all the way on deck 4.

Water slides/rides - not much else to say other than there are none.
Aqua Duck on DCL is awesome.
Edited to add: Anthem has a surfing stimulator called The Flowrider, but it's not in the pool area. I will mention it again when I review activities on the ship.

Outdoor TV screen - I already mentioned Anthem doesn't play movies on it during the day. There is less kids I get it. Even if they played music videos or some PG shows.
Often times this screen just proudly displayed the Royal Caribbean logo.

Smoking Area - there is one near the pools, a few times we walked by it to get to where we were going... wish Anthem had this out of the way like Disney does.
Although once we figured out which side it was on, it was easily avoided.

Below are some pics of the adults-only Solarium and indoor pool on Anthem of the Seas.
I had to post outdoor pool pics in next post.

Interesting... well ... when I review Adventure Ocean you will find out what my DS8 thought about it. He's been on 4 Disney cruises in the last 3 years and spent A LOT of time in the Oceaner Lab & Club. Loved the childrens programming on Disney.
He did go to Adventure Ocean on Anthem as well... stay tuned :)
