Disney break-ins, burglaries, & thefts?

No I don't think so. Those little wall safes are NOT full proof and that's what was broken into in my friends case. Even Disney recommends that if you have anything of real value to leave it at the check-in desk safe.

No you don't think so about what? You don't think it implies it was an employee (or friend of employee) for them to get into the room, then into the safe to steal? I never said the safes were full proof- but I think there would be clear evidence of breaking and entering the room, to get to the safe, if it wasn't an employee- you don't agree with that??

If I can't trust employees in the room- then I can't trust them at the check in desk safe either. Actually I've laways been leary of leaving valuables at the check-in desk safe of any hotel I've stayed at. Atleast in the safe in your room they don't KNOW what you have in there. When you check it in at the desk safe they know exactly what valuables you have- or at the very least know it's valuable enough for you to want to leave it there. Tempting I'd say..

i thought maybe the idea of a safe at the check in desk was that the hotel staff would be directly responsible if something happened to your valuables since they would be in their possession? :confused3

It was a little disconcerting that someone actually was going through my stuff..... but at least that was the only thing of value left in the room. Reported it to Disney, they checked card scans of our room and said the only two people who accessed the room (mousekeeping and a maintenence man to fix the bathtub had clean records with them) but I heard nothing more about it. Suspended service and had to deal with cost of replacing the phone when I got home.

I had no idea they could check card scans of the room and tell who'd been in there. But it's even more disconcerting that they can and when they find out that it's only employees that have been in there- they do nothing about it aftewards. Really great to keep employees from stealing (not!). :(
Clean records really mean nothing- do they STILL have clean records? I would assume so... so a clean record means nothing. It only means no one has physically SEEN them stealing while in guests rooms. :(

Maybe. But do you have to sign papers saying they aren't responsible? And if not, do you sign papers stating exactly what you're putting in there AND have the employee also go through everything and sign off that yes, indeed you are putting those items in there? Otherwise they'd have no proof you put items in there that you're now saying are missing.

Last Oct. Magic Kingdom. Was heading over to LTT for a nice dinner, Had my son in a Rental Stroller, with a Bookbag on top. (nothing important in it. Buzz light year doll, and my Sons Buzz spinner toy)
So told Hubby to park the stroller, he comes by 2 min later.. I ask where is the bag? He said Oh I forgot it, I go and get it.. not even 1 min later.. He comes back and says its gone!
We looked all around thinking it might have fallen off while we were walking and not noticed it. Finally gave way that it was stolen. Had a nice Dinner, was bothered by this. But still unsure if it just slipped off the stroller while walking.
About 10 feet away by the Liberty Bell, was the bag, thrown, and opened up. So it was stolen. Nothing taken.. What theif would want a ratty Buzz Doll?
But still Was crappy!

My best friend's SIL had her wallet stollen on the bus back from the park one night. She was sitting there with her backpack on and she thought she had it closed but when she got off to go walk to her room (in PO, I believe) she noticed her bag was open. It wasn't until a little while later when she was getting ready for the next day that she noticed her wallet was gone. She called her credit cards and bank and thankfully there was no usage on them. She was stuck without money so her friend had to foot the bill for both of them until her brother could wire her money down. She said it was a nightmare.

With the front desk safe at almost every reputable hotel all items are covered for loss. With room safes it's all at your own risk, i.e. it gets stolen your out...my friend. You obviously have not stayed at many deluxe or 5-star hotels.

3 years ago, My daughter left her new gameboy advance in the room after checkout. We were an hour away when it was realized. We called OKW, and were told the room had not been cleaned yet. We know exactly where it was, but of course it was not found when they checked the room. Last month, my daughter decided to repeat her earlier performance and left , again a gameboy, in her purse in the room. This time, they mailed us the purse, and the gameboy was gone.

Does anybody remember the story of the family, (I believe they were from overseas somewhere because part of the discussion centered on it possibly being a cultural thing for them to have carried so much cash) last year or so, where they were staying in one of the deluxes, and they said that they had been robbed from their room safe of THOUSANDSof dollars in cash and lots of expensive jewelry? I think there were some details like a record of an employee going in the room and some proof that the safe had been tampered with, and they had their key on them, but everything was gone and the talk here was that Disney was going to have to pay. I just don't remember all the details. The funny thing is that I had JUST been wondering about what ever happened with that case YESTERDAY, and today I just now read this thread about a similar topic. So does anyone remember this and know what ever came of the situation?

Well, on our trip to WDW last May, our rental car was broken into.

They got a backpack full of souviners, hats, a very expensive digital camera (with a lot of our photos still on it), and other small things.

The tough thing was that my to-be mother in law always gives her children a special little packet of metals/crosses and things like that when they travel. There was some stuff from her childhood and included a rosary that was blessed by the pope at the vatican. That was not an easy call to make and tell her about them. She was wonderful about it and was just happy that it was only the car that got broken into and not anything worse.
Kimberly,
If you don't mind me asking, where was your rental car parked when it was broken into? Resort? Theme Park? DTD?
Thanks

I have never heard of anyone I know being robbed at WDW. We have left the daiper bag on the stoller during every attraction (a nice lands end black basic book bag) and we have left the laptop out of the safe in our room. I guess I'll be more careful from now on.

While at Epcot this spring I lost my check card and my ID. I had them in my front pocket of my pants along with my small cell phone. I thought to myself that I shouldn't have them all in one pocket, but then I got distracted and forgot about it. Later when I got another call, I realized that the only thing in my front pocket was my phone. They either fell out, or I just left them on a counter when I made a purchase. A blonde moment I guess. I panicked and transfered all of my money out of checking into another account and then had the bank close my checking account. It made me sick because they had both my check card AND my ID. After closing my account I was able to relax a bit and enjoy the rest of the day. Upon leaving the park, I checked with guest services, and sure enough someone turned them in!! Good story, eh?

In February 2004 my 15 year old son somehow lost his wallet either in or around the Haunted Mansion complete with $50 dollars in it. The next day we went to lost and found and there it was with $50 dollars still in it.

We have never been robbed or had anything stolen while there. But I never forgot once when I was about 10 or 12, my parents had taken us to Epcot. They bought me several dolls from the different lands. Well being young and careless I left them sitting somewhere. We looked and looked for them. We checked lost and found several times and they never showed up. I was so disappointed. I did learn a good lesson about keeping up with your purchases no matter where you are! I still think Disney is one of the safest places I have ever been. But even there a little precaution isn't a bad thing.

How can your room be robbed at night while you are in it? The doors have 2 locks on the interior side of the door that only a person on the inside can unlock..unlesss of course, the inside locks werent locked. I feel safe in the rooms at disney becasue of the two inside locks.

My DD's girlfriend had $100 stolen from her purse on a trip with us in 2004. They are college age and had one studio and DH and I had another studio at BCV. It happened the afternoon we checked in and we knew it was only left in the room unattended for about an hour. Seems like they had 2 or 3 other breakins that occurred that same weekend. Disney was very nice and reimbursed DD's friend her money and moved us to adjoining rooms at the Yacht Club (only thing available) and gave us some other nice perks. Awful experience but turned out ok. Since then we've made sure to lock things in the room safe. Now I'm wondering about them too . . .

I beg your pardon? You obviously don't know what assuming does, because you shouldn't assume that I haven't stayed at deluxe or 5-star hotels. I most certainly have- I've just never used the front desk safe because I don't see HOW they could be covered for the loss. As I said in my previous post- unless they document every item you are putting in their safe and sign that it was received... not just that 'something' was received... I could see them fighting it if you say your diamond necklace has disappeared (for example only). It would be very easy for them to say we have no proof that there WAS a diamond necklace in the bag you had us put in the front desk safe- things like that.
I asked if they do that (document everything they are putting in there so they would be liable for everything), because I've never USED the front desk safe. I just have never liked the idea of them KNOWING what I'm putting in there.

A room safe shouldn't be stolen from- unless there is clear signs of breaking/entering in the ROOM and breaking the lock on the safe. Short of that- it's an employee issue, period.
And please stop assuming things... what you think I 'obviously' have and haven't done. geesh

I was...though it wasn't that big of deal. When I was in my early twenties, I owned a Jeep Wrangler and we were staying at the Contemporary Resort. Someone broke in, basically unsnapped my top, and stole my car stereo and about 20 cassette tapes (that's right cassettes...now you know it was a while ago :teeth: ). I didn't report it or anything...I just chalked it up to one of the many problems with Jeep ownership.

Shah.

Now you've REALLY dated yourself.

Again.

:teeth:

Never been robbed. I'm just heckling Laugh O. Grams.

I've been going to DW since the 70's and only had 2 incidents. The first was many years ago at Poly. Someone broke into our room but I woke up and they ran away. I heard that they took a pocketbook from a room across from us. When my son was a baby some mean person stole his baseball cap off of the stroller. That is all in an awful lot of trips. I feel very safe there.

How can they break in a room with those big lock things that secure you from inside?

Oh and I forgot to mention the time we went in 2003 when my son lost his Buzz sunglasses the first day we were there. He just left them somewhere... at Epcot. Later that day we went by guest relations TOTALLY not expecting them to be there but checking just in case- sure enough, they were there. Disney magic for a little 5yr old boy that day. :)
