Hi everyone! I have lurked for ages and finally registered today because I need HELP! We go to disney world every year. A few days ago we decided to plan our first trip to Disneyland in feb.

I'm already confused and slightly lost (okay completely lost) on all the differences between the two. To be honest I've never really looked into Disneyland before.

So to start, what are the can't miss food stops at Disneyland? From counter service to table service and best character meals too.

I apologize if there is already a thread out there w/ this info that I have overlooked. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sure you will get quite a few different opinions here.
Here are my picks for can't miss.

Table service : Blue Bayou crab cakes!!! Make reservations, check in early and wait for a waterside table. It's worth it.

Counter service : Hungry Bear fried green tomato sandwich (or a burger). Sit by the the water and watch the boats go by.

Quick service : Award Wieners in DCA for the portabella mushroom hot dog.

Snacks : Jolly Holiday Bakery for a lemon bar or Pooh's Corner for a Tigger Tail.

Table Service: Blue Bayou. Last time we had dinner and the surf and turf was yummy!

Counter Service: Jolly Holiday. Lots of yummy things to choose from! Chicken salad sandwich and caprese sandwich are yummy! Flo's in Cars Land is yummy too.

Quick Service: Corn dog cart!

Snacks: Dipped cone at the Cozy Cone in Cars Land, beignets from the Jazz Kitchen Express in DTD, dole whip, anything at ghiradelli, vanilla or cherry or raspberry coke at coke corner!

They redid the menu 3 months ago and they're no longer on it.

It's a vegetarian portobello mushroom sandwich. There has been some confusion in the past about whether or not there is a veggie hot dog, there isn't.

Check the Parks Blog before your trip, there may be some limited time food during your trip.

We have been there after the change. They will still serve it for lunch.

yummy!

The "hot dog" does not contain meat and the menu calls it a hot dog... no actual wiener involved. ;)

Here is mine..
Table service : Blue Bayou, get a waterside table and you'll love the ambiance of the place! It's an experience for sure

Counter service : Hungry Bear fried green tomato sandwich! Delicious, and the seating area is relaxing and shaded for a break during the day. I also tried Flo's cafe in DCA last trip, they had a pretty good meal and it's fun to watch the cars go to and from their meet and greet.

Quick service : Corn dogs!! I think it's the corn dog cart in DL, or the corn dog castle in DCA.. But may be wrong with the names.
Bengal BBQ also has some awesome bacon wrapped asparagus. Yum!

Snacks : I love churros, so that is my go-to snack when I'm walking around

Thanks for the info thus far! I'm not sure how to reply to individual post just yet but so far all sounds good (minus the dole whip, please don't hate me... I just can't w/ them lol)!

I've been checkin out the menus but just didn't know where to start w/out my dis world standbys.

This might help:

"What WDW Vets Need to Know About Dining at DLR" http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2914467

Thank you so much! Looks like a great thread to gobble up! It's already answered some of my questions that would have been asked after I finished my list of "must eats".

I love the fried chicken meal at the Plaza Inn. This might sound weird, but the chicken tastes so yummy dipped in honey!

The Coca Cola shop has really good jalapeno cheese pretzels. It tastes extra yummy with mustard!

The Dole Whip (pineapple frozen yogurt) at the Tiki Room bar is really refreshing on a warm day.

Fresh baked Bourdin sourdough bread & butter. They slice the loaf & provide butter pats. My favorite snack. Also corn on the cob from the cart is really good.

I like the tzatziki sauce on the chicken kabobs at Paradise Garden Grill.

Dole whips on a hot day. Chicken dinner at Plaza Inn. Rita (frozen) Margaritas.

Can't wait to go back!

WDW vet here. From our WDW perspective, we think that Minnie's breakfast is hands down the best character breakfast at either WDW or DL. Unlike WDW where for every character meal which characters appear are set in stone and it is never more than 5, at Minnies we have never seen less than 7 characters (we have seen up to 12!), and you never know who you are going to get. We've seen Minnie, Captain Hook, Fairy Godmother and Max (Goofy's son) about every time, but the rest there is a big variation. We've seen Chip and Dale, Mad Hatter, Alice, Rakifi, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Sleeping Beauty, Tweedle Dee, Pinnochio, Penguin from Mary Poppins, Brer Fox, Gepetto, and probably more I'm forgetting. We love the surprise aspect! The interactions are usually more than we get at WDW, too. Just about every trip, at least a couple of the characters will dance or play with DD(7) for quite a bit. I can remember her doing the macarena with Captain Hook a couple of years back which was hilarious. This year, the Fairy Godmother was on the floor teaching her how to tie her shoes, and how to do it so they wouldn't come untied (double loop them- I guess she taught me something too!). We usually like to go around 10:00 or 10:15. You can do some things in the park before breakfast in the early morning low line time, and it seems like the breakfast crowd is winding down so that the characters have a little more time to interact.

We like doing the World of Color Dining package too. WOC is not to be missed, but as it is all standing if you are short like me, you are going to want to be in front somewhere. With the dining package, you don't have to line up quite as early.

Blue Bayou is basically the same atmosphere as the San Angel in Epcot (outdoors inside), but with a New Orleans style and obviously a different kind of food. It is fun to sit and watch the POTC boats go by, if you can get a table near the water. As far as the food, some people rave about it, and my DH is a big fan of the Salmon there so we always go there, but my food has always been what I would describe as just okay (I'm not really a seafood eater, so I can't vouch for the salmon). DD just likes the light up ice cubes in the dark room- that is why it makes her list! To us, like the San Angel, it is all about the atmosphere.

Goofy's Kitchen is a fun character meal too, but we typically see more characters at Minnie's.

Ariel's is pretty much a standard Princess meal just like at WDW. The pictures with Ariel turn out really well usually (much more so than at the new dark Princess meet and greet area at DL). There is some variation in what Princesses you might run into other than Ariel though.

We've been pretty happy with the counter service options at DL too. We are not usually very big fans of most of WDW's counter service, but we have been happy with DL's. We really like the chicken at the Mexican place on Pacific Wharf at CA, but you will see some criticism about that place on here. We did not like the Chinese food from the place on the wharf, to the point where it got thrown in the trash after a couple of bits and we got something else.

I'm not a dole whip fan either-- never fear they have plenty of Mickey Head Ice Cream bars! Also, the churro is considered a DL staple for a dessert/snack.

Have fun! I hope you love DL as much as we do!

I'd second this statement. We ate there last week for a late breakfast at 10:30 and had 11 characters come by our table. the resteraunt was dead by then so they spent a fair amount of time with us. Eyeore kept stopping by ever few minutes; he was great. and Rafiki and Captain Hook kept playing pranks on each other by our table (not a sight you see everyday).

My family enjoyed the Paradise Garden Grill for quick service. We had skewers with the different sauces. We also loved Bengel's BBQ. We ordered 4 Skewers and split the 2 ways (DH and I).
For table service fav was Ariel's Grotto. We had such a nice time! We got the WOC pkg and ate dinner there. It was pricey, around $200 for 4, but we ordered 3 beers and a mixed drink. The kids really loved it too. Got a close-up view of WOC and it was the highlight of my trip!

My favorites:

Bengal BBQ - the spicy beef skewers are something I have to get on every visit. SOOO good.
Tiki Room - Dole Whip float. Every single time I visit, whether it's hot or cold out, I don't care.
Plaza Inn - Fried Chicken dinner is both delicious and an EXCELLENT value (three whole pieces of chicken, plus sides! It's easily enough to share between two adults who don't eat a ton, or an adult & a child).
Corn Dog - either at the red hot dog cart near the hub, or at one of the places in DCA (Corn Dog Castle or Award Wieners).
Carthay Circle - the food is quite good, and the drinks are strong. :) But you definitely pay for it.
Flo's - Pretty tasty. Both my son & I really enjoyed our turkey meals.

I also LOVE the Minnie & Friends Character Breakfast. I've done the Storytellers Cafe one (not my favorite) and the Ariel's Grotto one (for lunch; good food but I'm not a big princess person).

Also, if you find yourself at the Disneyland Hotel, I'd hit up Trader Sam's (bar near the pool). The ahi tuna poke is delicious, and the drinks are tasty.

What is the difference between the Dole Whip and the Dole Whip Float?

Also, many people say Flo's is good. What on the menu is good?

The float has pineapple juice added to the Dole Whip, just like a Coke float has Coke and ice cream.

Dole whip is the pineapple-flavored soft serve ice cream. The float is the ice cream plus pineapple juice. It's great, but only if you love pineapple. ;)

As for Flo's, the only thing I've had is the turkey dinner, with mashed potatoes and I think the peas & carrots. It's really tasty - salty, but tasty. My son and I are both salt-a-holics, so we enjoyed our meals there. I've heard good things about the pork w/BBQ sauce, and mixed reviews on the vegetarian casserole. The breakfasts with eggs seem to be the standard park fare, nothing special, but the banana caramel French toast was good for a super sweet tooth (if you can handle lots of sugar in the morning). There are lots of good reviews of the food at most DL & DCA locations on the DisneyFood Blog, so you might want to google that. :)

We love a break at Carnation Cafe when it's cool out to have potato soup & cinnamon hot chocolate it is so good!
