I have one thirty minute break at work so any snacks I have have to be portable. I love apples, but mushy slices in my pocket, just aren't cutting it!! I've tried having a salad for supper, but I'm just so darn hungry but then I have to have something solid.
I do great on water!! In fact, I get really thirsty when I don't have enough.
Here's my normal day and you can see where I go wrong.
Breakfast :small fat free yogurt with grapenuts and 1/2 banana
Lunch: lean pocket and 10 yogurt raisin (my little sweet treat)
Then it's cheese crackers while waiting for dinner then big dinner with a fudgie pop, then usually pretzels or popcorn while we watch TV.
I'd like to put more of my calories into the first of my day, but if I ask to go to the back to eat, I feel like everyone is thinking, "Does she really need to eat more?" (Probably just my problem.)
I'd appreciate any tips you can share. Hope everyone is having a awesome, skinny day!!!
I'm pretty good with the eating part of a healthy lifestyle.. the exercising, I'm no good.
Do you know how many calories earlier in the day you are consuming? I mean everything before dinner?
I would eat a high fiber cereal for breakfast if I were you. If you like your yogurt, I'd get plain FiberOne and mix it in with your yogurt. This will really help you stay full longer. But I would do cereal as cereal and milk. But really chew your food. Try to take your time and chew a lot. (FYI regular FiberOne is really bland, so I picked up some "flavored" FiberOne and a South Beach Diet cereal to mix it up.)
What do you do for your job? I find it really difficult at my job to get snacks in. I work in a clothing store and am constantly running around trying to get everything done and rarely ever step in the back.
You said you like apples, why don't you put your apple slices in something like a Tupperware container? It will help them from getting mushy. Sprinkle a lil lemon juice on them also.
I would steer clear of the Lean Pockets... even though they say "lean" they aren't good for you. Try getting Healthy Choice, SmartOnes, Lean Cuisine for lunch instead. They still aren't the best, but they are fast and quick. This is what I usually bring to work for a meal. Some are really good and some are bad! If you can, try the South Beach Diet wraps, salads or subs. In my grocery store they are with the... god what are they called... Lunchables or something. They keep me full for a long time... and your getting fiber and protein and not so much fat.
I don't know much about those yogurt raisens, but why not have a yogurt with lunch and put raisens in it? This will be more filling!
How long is your drive home from work? This may be a good time to have a snack. I think bananas are really good at filling you up. Plus they are portable!
Try to avoid cheese and crackers. Cheese is really high in fat and calories. But if you must, get whole wheat crackers and where I live you can get low calorie cheeses. They are really good, except the Sharp doesn't come in Extra...
As for your dinner, try measuring your food out. This may seem a bit over the top, but it really helps me keep control of my portions! If you don't have a scale (mine is MIA) then use some of the general rules of thumb for measuring meat... a service is about the size of a deck of cards. It doesn't seem like a lot if you are used to eating more. Take out your measuring cups and measure your pasta, sauces, veggies, etc.
I know the deal with salads... I HATE SALADS! They don't fill me up either. I've been eating them because lettuce is a cheap veggie and its fast to prepare. But there are all sorts of veggies out there. Broccoli, asparagus, peas, green/red/orange peppers.
I'd eliminate pretzels from your kitchen if I were you. They can add up fast in calories. How do you make your popcorn? Is it the type in the lil microwavable bag? Popcorn is a filling low calorie food if you don't load it up with butter. Generally I would buy the buttery microwavable kind. It was about 40 calories a cup. With 3 servings in a bag, that makes only 120 calories for the whole thing (which I can't eat, but that's beside the point). But my mom buys the popcorn... I don't know what it is, its just popcorn... you take a couple scoops and pop it. Anyways, with that, instead of using butter on it, I'll dunk my popcorn in hot sauce (which I love) or buy some Laughing Cow Cheese and put a wee bit on each piece. Laughing Cow Cheese is a good alternative to most cheeses because there is only 35 calories in a wedge.
I would set a time during the night... 2 to 3 hours before you go to bed and say NO FOOD AFTER... whatever time it is... Mine is 7 pm. When I did this, I didn't lose any weight, but I stopped putting on weight! Now I know things don't always work out like that (like at my job I may not be able to take my dinner break until after 7).
And like I said earlier, take your time to chew your food. Sometimes people eat more because they didn't get their... this sounds bad.. oral fixation on. I have that problem. I have to chew and chew and chew or I eat more. Also it takes some time for your body to recognize that there is food in it.
But the biggest thing is to just watch your portions. At first you will feel hungry... your body needs to readjust to not having so much stuff in it. But you also need to make sure you are getting enough calories and nutrients in during the day.
I take a multivitamin every day and 1000 mg of calcium a day. I heard that taking a calcium suppliment can help you lose weight. So I started and it does help me lose a couple extra pounds (I know this because I was taking them, and ran out... didn't change anything in my diet except for no calcium and I stopped losing weight). If you plan to get or already do have a calcium suppliment there are somethings you want to consider... Calcium is no good to your body without magnesium and vitamin D. I get mine from the Vitamin Shoppe.
I personally found that posting what you eat online in a thread like this really helps you lose weight and keep things under control. So perhaps if you do that it might help and we can give you our advice on maybe what will help or not. Also, I'm part of SparkPeople. I don't know if you heard of them before. It is a website that has all sorts of tools to help you lose weight! Plus there are message boards where you can go and talk about anything and everything or get help. If you haven't, check it out. You can use it to help you figure out your calories per day. My name is Beck_Why on there in case you wanna search for me!
