Have you tried melting the ends with a lighter? That is what I do to rick-rack and ribbon to keep it from fraying.
Yeah, that didn't go so well!! It must be cotton stuff because it just burned and smelled bad, but still frayed.

So cute, that looks like a Russell Stover chocolate bunny  Isn't it bad enough that after Sawyer's chocolate chip cookie face I had to go and make chocolate chip cookies yesterday? :sad2:
So, if I tell you that Sawyer was eating ginger cookies, would you make some of those today? ;) My husband made them. I was astounded!! I have never, in the 18 years we've been together, seen him bake anything! They turned out really good, though!

applique help now that I have your attention. I recently got an ariel wall hanging (not quilted) that I am turing into dresses for dds. On the edge there are extra of flounder and some flowers that I want to put on the dress. My question.... how much selvage (edge) do I need around the applique to sew it on properly. Do you put anything on the back to adhere it to the dress, like heatn'bond? I think those are the only ????s I have about it. Oh wait, I have just a regular kenmore sewing machine, no embroidery machine, what stitch can I use to edge it? TIA
Lori

I don't leave an edge, I just cut right on the lines for that kind of applique (if you're piecing together a picture, you do it a little differently). I use heat 'n bond lite and I bond the fabric I'm using to that first (leaving the paper on), then cut it out. It's easier to cut the fabric when it has the paper backing from the heat 'n bond on it. Then, I take the paper off and iron it on.
You'll need to experiment with you machine a little to get the right settings for applique. Use your zig-zag stitch and set it to the shortest stitch length you can get it to work on. I usually use a width of about 3. HTH!

th_IMG_1002.jpg

Wow! That looks great! Especially for something you whipped up in 45 minutes!

I went to joanns for the sale over the weekend and this somehow ended up in my cart
M_14389_singercg7541.jpg
along with 10 yards of muslin (to make photo backdrops) numerous spools of thread, 7 yards of tulle to make a pettiskirt, (which I finally bought the pattern from ycmt.com) so all in all a very expensive trip! LOL I got the serger set up and it works great! I'm going to tackle the petti this afternoon. We'll see how it goes.
Wow!! Congrats on the serger!! I want one!!

I'm a lurker and I love to lurk on this board. You have done such a wonderful job of making it so easy for me to be a really good lurker. I've been inspired many times but have only made 2 outfits and have gotten many compliments. I gave everyone on this board credit for the outfits.

OK, I will go bach to lurking now.:surfweb:

So glad to have you here! Why haven't you posted pictures of the 2 things you made? We'd love to see them! You don't have to give us credit for the stuff you've made. Most of the things on here are CASED in one way or another!

oh no you won't we need pictures of those 2 outfits! Pretty please?:flower3:

OK this is why I am a lurker. I don't know how to post pictures..I just know how to lurk..But I am slowly learning...And even though I did get compliments these ladies have not seen your outfits...My outfits are in the category of below preschool level..and when it come to trimming I got an F..I had to carry the scissors w/me because I kept seeing strings hanging out. I learned from my mistakes and am attemping another outfit w/out strings. I want to learn so much I just don't know where to start.

I asked this in the other thread, but not sure if we are still supposed to post there...so I will repost my question here...
For those of you making button down shirts for your ds..which pattern do you use? I use a McCall pattern, and for some reason, I just can't seem to match up the notches and dots for the sleeves....yet when I put the pattern on my fabric, I have marked them all correctly. I tried another boys top this past weekend, and again...I have problem matching up notches/dots on the sleeves again...so I am thinking it must be me...doing something wrong or not understanding the pattern?
Jenny

I haven't made a regular sleeved shirt in awhile, but you are suppose to clip the edges of the piece that is bigger, then pin and stretch the heck out of it to make the pieces line up. At least, that's what Mrs. MCDonald taught me in 8th grade hom-ec!

Ok here are the pictures of DD's room.

th_S2010070.jpg
Lydia is loving your daughter's room!!!
I guess I'll subscribe here so I don't miss anything!

Denise, those gauchos you made were cute!!!

Thank you - if no-one has answered there is a tutorial on Revrob's site (think the link is in her siggy :)

I have the tutorial linked in the bookmarks too. :thumbsup2

A project finished is a day's accomplishment! Here's my day's accomplishment - the Ariel outfit finally done. Boy I love that tiered skirt - it's quick. I finished it while watching My Dad's better then your Dad. Unfortunately the Dad we wanted to win didn't. Go Kang Family!!

th_IMG_0174.jpg

So now I'm on to the Ltd too shirt. New pattern so I'm alittle nervous about it, so wish me luck!

That turned out cute!!!

It's hard to follow Aimee's Evil Queen, but here's one thing I've done lately. This is for my dgd2. I need to get dd2 to try it on, but here it is for now.
th_RyleeEaster5.jpg

I also made some of these for dd2 to wear with her Minnie outfits. Since I took this pic, I've added red/white ribbon for laces. Looks really cute!
th_shoes.jpg

th_dumbojeans2.jpg

MMMMMMMMMMM chocolate................ Cute outfit!!!

I love those shoes, and the Dumbo jeans!! And, I can't wait to see your Cruella!! When's the big reveal?

I have a TOTALLY ADORABLE Ariel skirt and top that a very dear friend made for Lydia that I need to take a picture of once I find some batteries for my camera......:rolleyes1

I am glad I am not the only one. The first time I made it, I thought I did something wrong, so I tried to make a second shirt and double check all my notches/circles and still, it didn't match up. I have a Butterick pattern as well, so maybe I will try that next...I tried the McCall's one first because it said "easy" on it.

My home ec teacher taught us that you are suppose to clip the seams, then pin and stretch to fit.

Just for the record, that chocolate bunny I did was not my idea to begin with. It is defitely CASEd :)

About the shoes, I just used E6000 and a pair of tweezers. Not really any tricks ... a piece of advice though, keep your crystals in something and not just on the table!!!!! They are easily knocked off and lost! Especially the little 3mm size. How do I know this, you ask? LOL

Yes, I ask, how do you know this?? :rotfl:

Before I cut up my patterns for an outfit, I was hoping maybe someone could answer my question. It got lost on the other thread :( How do you trace your patterns so you can reuse them and different sizes??

TIA!
Sorry, I know this is such a basic question, but I am a beginner:

I get the tracing paper or fabric and I already own a tracing wheel. How does this work? Does it put little groves that indicate where to cut the lines? Do, I buy some sort of transfer paper? Or do I just put the see through stuff over the pattern and trace with a pencil?
I have a section in the bookmarks about copying the patterns.

You use the tracing wheel with fabric tracing paper (you can get it at the fabric store) You put the tracing paper under your pattern, then trace the pattern or the markings on the pattern right onto your fabric.
So cute, that looks like a Russell Stover chocolate bunny  Isn't it bad enough that after Sawyer's chocolate chip cookie face I had to go and make chocolate chip cookies yesterday? :sad2:
That is too funny! I was going to make a comment about the delicious cookies my brother in law made yesterday, but I see Heather did, so I will save my comment for her quote....

So DD10 mentions to me last night, as she is working on her oral book report for tomorrow, she is supposed to DRESS UP for her report. They are doing reports on biographies and she chose Sacagawea. All I can say is if I have to do a last minute late-night costume, thank you for choosing Sacagawea! So I ran to Wally's and found some $1 a yard fabric and whipped this up. It's not the greatest (think of what I could've done with some advance notice!) but I was tired and ready for bed. It is also very "static clingy". No time to wash fabric first! I made the "dress", belt, headband, and medicine pouch in probably about 45 mins. :scared1: It took me about that long to find my old moccasins in my closet :rotfl:

th_IMG_1002.jpg

Ummm....WOW!!!!!!!! You are one TERRIFIC Mommy!!!!!!! :worship: That looks GREAT!!!! Very very impressive, especially for a 45 minute outfit!!!! I can't even cut out fabric in 45 minutes!!!! It takes me that long to clear off the table to START sewing!!!

I went to joanns for the sale over the weekend and this somehow ended up in my cart. COOL!!! Have fun with your new serger!!!

Oh I forgot the best part about the serger! My mom (who the kids haven't seen in a year since she lives so far away) is going to come down for a week next month and show me all the ins and outs of it. I'm so excited!!!!
:faint: <-----That's me just THINKING of not seeing my Mom for a year!! How do you do it?

REALLY REALLY GOOD!!! And BIG!! No little bit sized cookies from my BIL! I was shocked to hear that he had baked cookies!

There is a tutorial for posting pictures right in the first post of this thread! So, now you have no excuse!!!

Post pictures, then make another outfit!!

There is a tutorial in the very first post in this thread. If you need any more help, just ask us!

Everyone is always harder on their own sewing abilities than other's are. I'm sure your outfits are great, especially if you got compliements (and not just puzzled looks from strangers) on them!!

ETA: My sister beat me to it and answered you first. She's good!

I've never done this before, but I think I understand what you are asking. If you want to trace and cut out your pattern in a certain size you would use tissues paper or the Pattern ease paper, place it over your pattern and trace the size you want with a pencil. If you want to mark your fabric so you can cut out the pattern you would use actual tracing paper and the tracing wheel. Put the tracing paper between the pattern and your fabric and then run the wheel over the lines on the pattern. The pressure of the wheel on the tracing paper will leave colored/dotted lines on the fabric to show you where to cut.

ETA: Oops, I see that Teresa already explained this. And we even agree! Good to know I wasn't just imagining that I knew what I was talking about. LOL!

It's perfect!

I went to joanns for the sale over the weekend and this somehow ended up in my cart

   Congrats on your new toy!! Can't wait to see the pettiskirt!

Repetition for emphasis!

I promised a lady at Brian's work that I would make outfits for her Grand daughter's trip to Florida, then realized they are leaving in like a week! :scared1: So, I stayed up last night to get one of the dresses done. They are eating at Chef Mickey's, so I made a Minnie dress. This is for a 2 year old. I still need to make one for the 6 year old though.

All in all, I think it turned out pretty cute! I'm wishing there was maybe a bit more yellow on it, but Brian said it looked perfect the way it was (I love my husband!) and took it to work allready!
DSCF2348.jpg

The back. I retied this silly bow 4 times trying to get it just right to show you guys! But, it still doesn't look right!
DSCF2351_800x600.jpg

I was upset that I didn't have any black and white polka dot fabric, but then I found this cute little flower fabric in my stash. I really like the way it looks.

That turned out so cute! I love it! It makes me want more minnie dot...I think I have just enough to make a jumper or dress for Lily, but not as full as I'd like. Whoever said "you can never have enough Minnie dot" was soooo right!

I started it around midnight last night! That's why you didn't know! I barely knew I was doing it myself, I was half asleep!

Thanks for the nice comments guys!!! I love your approval!!!

HEY, where did the bookmarks link go in my siggy?? I need to do some editing!

Very empressive for a last minute whip up.

Since you have come out into the open you have to share pics of what you have made. We all love to go oooo and aaaahhhh around here.

This is so cute. It looks perfect for a 2 year old.

Thank you all for the comments on DD's room. We have been living in this apartment for about 6 months now and I finally had the time to actually decorate DD's room. Before the room got done DD wouldn't play in her room or anything. Now she is in her room all the time. She's actually keeping it clean too.:scared1: I should have done this a long time ago.

DD started a new school today and everyone kept complimenting her on her bows and a name tag that I had made her. Well DD then starts telling everyone who will listen that her mommy will be making her some shirts for school and that I make her dresses and shorts and shirts and everything. :cool2: She is very proud of the things that I make her. So Thanks again to you guys for inspiring me to start sewing again.

teresajoy ~ I love the dress! There aren't that many original ways to sew up that Minnie Dot at this point, but you found one. Very cute! Is the big sister dress going to be exactly the same?

jham ~ The gaucho fabric was on sale at my little quilt shop we have in town. They are in a 200 year old house and they turned the old chicken coup into the sale room! So, I bought it in the chicken coup! Does that help enough? Well if not here's what is says on the selvage edge - So you, sew fun 2006 RJR fabrics. Hope that helps.

TinaLala- I love the HM comforter that you have for your DD. That is what I was looking for for DD's room, but Wal-Mart just had the one with the big dots on it and it has a HM applique with sequins on it.

I've also created a 3pc Cruella DeVil outfit for dd7 to wear to MGM, but I can't show it yet.
cute i can't wait to see cruella :thumbsup2

I also made these for a friend to go with her Dumbo shirt instead of a skirt.
th_dumbojeans2.jpg
now those are just too cute

I am glad I am not the only one. The first time I made it, I thought I did something wrong, so I tried to make a second shirt and double check all my notches/circles and still, it didn't match up. looking out for the butterick one what number is it?

The scarriest one of all.....MALEFICENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She would totally go with the skirt! Especially when she is standing holding up her arms with her big nasty wand/spector/stick thingy!!! Her dress is kind of "ragged" around the edges like the skirt, and she is purple. That would be an easy fit. PLUS I happen to know someone who just sold an Aurora outfit, that knows how to make really good Aurora's, that could "go with" the Maleficent outfit too!
oh i second that idea how cool..

So DD10 mentions to me last night, as she is working on her oral book report for tomorrow, she is supposed to DRESS UP for her report. They are doing reports on biographies and she chose Sacagawea. wowzza That is adorable . Maybe for yellow they could find a barrette to go with it... then that would tie the outfit together... okay so if you started it at midnight what time did you finish it???;)

I have at least 10 diff fabrics in the washer right now so that i can get sewing i am so excited  esp. after mama utah showed me Norah's new one OMG!!!!!! :rolleyes1 i had to get the same material so Jayedyn and Norah will be twinners again ... :cutie: :cloud9:

You are sweet!! Thank you! I'm thinking I'll do the sister one the same. I think it will translate pretty well into a bigger size. I think I need to go get some wider ric rac for the bigger one though.

Shoot! That turned out great! If she was my DD, she would have had to wear a brown paper bag and a duster feather!

I love them all! and that Bunny...mmmmmmmmmm

45 minutes! Go Mom!! It looks great!

I went to joanns for the sale over the weekend and this somehow ended up in my cart along with 10 yards of muslin (to make photo backdrops) numerous spools of thread, 7 yards of tulle to make a pettiskirt, (which I finally bought the pattern from ycmt.com) so all in all a very expensive trip! LOL I got the serger set up and it works great! I'm going to tackle the petti this afternoon. We'll see how it goes.

WAHOOOOO! I want a serger very badly... almost as badly as I want to go to DLR NOW! ok maybe just as badly. Have fun!

so cute! I love the black flowers so small its perfect print!
