I married at 25, just after obtaining my Ph.D.; my DH was 27 and also had just obtained his Ph.D.
My DH wouldn't marry me until I defended- afraid I wouldn't finish. Glad he made me finish 22 years later! We are both profs and have, after 22 years in the business, finally hit around the $50K mark each. I would actually be making significantly more if I had stayed a teacher in the public school system or gone into private practice. My husband's salary would have been at least triple if he had stayed with industry. Oh well- there are other perks of the job (although don't ask me what those might be as we approach finals week!).
BTW- we science profs do NOT have the summers off. We are expected to continue research, supervise students and work on committees; only pay we might get is what we supplement off of our grants or pick up from teaching an extra summer course. Although are contracts specify 10 months, in reality we work all year. What I would GIVE for a REAL summer off!
