Uncleromulus had been planning to go to Shula's for some time now. I always liked the YSH for steak, and I was interesetd in comparing the two. And this time we had 2 other couples with us--fans of Ruths Chris and Mortons, meaning fans of good steak!!
Our PS (made that same morning) was for 6:30 on Friday nite. Uncleromulus was FORCED to wear a collared shirt this time around, as the 2 other fellows had purchased Disney "golf" shirts and were wearing them. So I opted to do the same --but we were all in shorts, so that made it somewhat more acceptable(!)
Anyway, we were seated immediately and I noticed the place was about 1/2 full that evening. Seemed to be mostly groups of 4-6 men at the tables, tho we did see several couples, and several families with kids in the 10-14 year old range. But no infants or high-chair age kids this nite.
We all decided to have steak and due to the reported size of appetizers, we ordered two appetizers for our table--a tomatoe and cheese plate, and some BBQ shrimp. Both were excellent and were quite enough for the 6 of us (especially considering what was to come).
Steaks we ordered were 4 Filet Mignons, one Prime Rib, and the 24 Oz Porterhouse (which was my choice). One of the ladies ordered the Filet "well done"--many times the wait staff will make a face, etc. when this is done, but our server was just fine with it. Also due to the reported size of the alacarte vegetables, we ordered just 2 of the creamed spinich for the table. Again-it was quite enough!!
We had to wait a bit for our entrees due to the "well done" order, but the wait was worth it. The steaks were simply out of this world good!! My Porterhouse was huge, with a very large tenderloin section. The Prime Rib overflowed the plate it was on. And the almost fork-tender 12 OZ Filets proved too much to eat for all 3 of the ladies--I only wish they would offer a "petite" or "queen" cut of Filet. The spinich proved to be an excellent addition to the meal--I have no idea where a potato would have fit in!!
Desserts were all very good--3 Creme Brulees, one vanilla cheesecake (mine) and 2 ice creams. Must admit I should have gotten the ice cream also--the cheesecake was a bit heavy after all that steak (but it was smooth and quite tasty, so I did finish it off!)
Drink-wise the ladies all had wine--they have an excellent wine list and a pretty fair by-the glass selection. Uncleromulus of course had beer--the one major area where Shula's could improve. The best I could do was Sapporo--and that's not my favorite Japanese beer.
Service was very good thruout our meal. We had sort of a "team" of 3 different servers (all men). They were just a shade under "Disney Friendly" (no mention of our new Disney shirts, no small talk about of what we did that day, etc), but they did a fine job of serving us and I guess that's what really matters.
So all in all, I can recommend Shula's as a place for good steak. The meat itself seemed better, (and the portions larger) than YSH. The atmosphere is a bit "mens clubbish" and you don't really sense you are at a Disney restaurant (which you aren't, I guess).
The $$ for all this--well, with tip lets just say it came to a LOT of money--our second most expensive meal after V&A.
