Dinner at Shula's-expensive, but worth it.

Uncleromulus had been planning to go to Shula's for some time now. I always liked the YSH for steak, and I was interesetd in comparing the two. And this time we had 2 other couples with us--fans of Ruths Chris and Mortons, meaning fans of good steak!!
Our PS (made that same morning) was for 6:30 on Friday nite. Uncleromulus was FORCED to wear a collared shirt this time around, as the 2 other fellows had purchased Disney "golf" shirts and were wearing them. So I opted to do the same --but we were all in shorts, so that made it somewhat more acceptable(!)
Anyway, we were seated immediately and I noticed the place was about 1/2 full that evening. Seemed to be mostly groups of 4-6 men at the tables, tho we did see several couples, and several families with kids in the 10-14 year old range. But no infants or high-chair age kids this nite.
We all decided to have steak and due to the reported size of appetizers, we ordered two appetizers for our table--a tomatoe and cheese plate, and some BBQ shrimp. Both were excellent and were quite enough for the 6 of us (especially considering what was to come).
Steaks we ordered were 4 Filet Mignons, one Prime Rib, and the 24 Oz Porterhouse (which was my choice). One of the ladies ordered the Filet "well done"--many times the wait staff will make a face, etc. when this is done, but our server was just fine with it. Also due to the reported size of the alacarte vegetables, we ordered just 2 of the creamed spinich for the table. Again-it was quite enough!!
We had to wait a bit for our entrees due to the "well done" order, but the wait was worth it. The steaks were simply out of this world good!! My Porterhouse was huge, with a very large tenderloin section. The Prime Rib overflowed the plate it was on. And the almost fork-tender 12 OZ Filets proved too much to eat for all 3 of the ladies--I only wish they would offer a "petite" or "queen" cut of Filet. The spinich proved to be an excellent addition to the meal--I have no idea where a potato would have fit in!!
Desserts were all very good--3 Creme Brulees, one vanilla cheesecake (mine) and 2 ice creams. Must admit I should have gotten the ice cream also--the cheesecake was a bit heavy after all that steak (but it was smooth and quite tasty, so I did finish it off!)
Drink-wise the ladies all had wine--they have an excellent wine list and a pretty fair by-the glass selection. Uncleromulus of course had beer--the one major area where Shula's could improve. The best I could do was Sapporo--and that's not my favorite Japanese beer.
Service was very good thruout our meal. We had sort of a "team" of 3 different servers (all men). They were just a shade under "Disney Friendly" (no mention of our new Disney shirts, no small talk about of what we did that day, etc), but they did a fine job of serving us and I guess that's what really matters.
So all in all, I can recommend Shula's as a place for good steak. The meat itself seemed better, (and the portions larger) than YSH. The atmosphere is a bit "mens clubbish" and you don't really sense you are at a Disney restaurant (which you aren't, I guess).
The $$ for all this--well, with tip lets just say it came to a LOT of money--our second most expensive meal after V&A.

Your report should make Mitch happy! I can see him wiping his chin now!LOL Where is he anyway?

Thanks for the review!

Uncleromulus...I enjoy reading your reviews! We dined at Shula's in August and I agree with eveything you said:) We went the chocolate route with dessert (chocolate cake and a chocolate souffle) and they were excellent.;) Those filets are wonderful. I couldn't finish mine but my DD 12 ate every bite!

You hit the nail on the head about the service...very good service but certinly not "Disney" friendly. It almost seemed as if they had a "script" that worked and they were not going to deviate from that script. I made small jokes, my DH and DD thought they were funny...but absolutely no reaction from our server! Certainly no big deal...and that is the perfect description: "men's club" atmoshphere.

Keep those reviews coming!

Thanks for the review. My DH and I have been to Shula's and think it is one of the best. We have been to many of the steakhouses and this is our favorite. We were at Shula's last year and glad to hear it is still excellent. We will be dining there over the holidays with our 27 year old son who is a big steak lover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to your other reviews.

Here I am!!! LMFBO. Yes I'm drooling!!!!

UR, I feel better now after reading you review. It validates my feelings. I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope others who enjoy good beef will try it.

Thanks for the review, UR!:D My birthday is later this month and I have PS at Bistro de Paris (I noticed Filet on their menu when I was at the pastry shop Sunday), but now I think I may have to try Shula's. Aaahh, so many restaurant choices, so little time!;)

Uncle-

My DH and I often go to Morton's...and we do love it.

When we go to Disney, we like to go to restaurants that are unique and different from what we can get back here in CT.

So my question to you is...Is it different enough from Morton's so that we would experience new flavors or is it basically just like a Mortons?

If it is the same, than we'll stick to Mortons at home and at Disney try unique places like Jiko and Artist Point which we've been DYING to try but haven't had the chance.

BTW, I've been eagerly awaiting your reviews...thanks, they're great!

Erikarate...I am interested in Uncleromulus's opinion too. I have never been to Morton's ... but I am a fan of Ruth's Chis Steakhouse. And there are definite similarities: the high prices, the large portions, etc. But the steak tasted totally different. They were both delicious...but different.

So I guess my opinion would be...if you don't get to WDW very often, try the more "unusual" restaurants: Jiko, Boma, Artist's Point, Narcoossee's, Citricos, California Grill, Flying Fish, Les Chefs de France, etc. :D
But if you go more often, and have tried those restaurants, go for Shula's. I enjoyed it, too, being a footbal fan. And a Buffalo Bills fan at that!:p

Thanks KelliR, I think you're right. We'll skip it for now until we try some other restaurants.

One other thing I want to say though is:

let's go jets Jets JETS!!! LOL!!!

Thanks for the review!! I think we will add this to our Christmas trip.

Could you tell us a little bit more about the decor?? DH and DS are football fans.

Erikarate and kelliR:
My opinion is that it is very similar to Mortons, such that you would probably feel that you had just been to Mortons if you went to Shula's. So I agree that doing some of the other places first would be a good idea. I do rate Shula's better than Ruths Chris, and on par with Mortons.
LVStnk:
You'll know who owns the place when you go in, and the menu is printed on a football. And there are pictures on the walls. But it isn't anything like an ESPN Club, so go to Shula's primarily if you are really interested in fine steaks. The football stuff is mostly secondary.

Thanks, DH will love it! Wanted to try this before but reviews were luke warm. We have been to Mortons here and once in New Orleans so I think this is just what we have been looking for.

There is Shula's in New York. I think we will give it a try.
thanks for the reviews as always I really enjoyed them.

Thanks for the website, it's not open yet, it is opening in November at the Westin in NYC. It's been advertised a lot in our area.

Cool. You will absolutely love it.

Hey Uncleromulus! I am so happy you liked Shula's!
I cant wait to go again in November! It will be our 4th time.
I like the mens club atmosphere, it throws a little variety in our nights out! :)
The service we receive is always ver professional, yet friendly, perfect!
never small talk about Disney, but probably on purpose, because it isnt a Dsiney restaurant, and they want to keep it "separate" !:)

thanks for the great reviews, I'm enjoying them!

Laura :)
