Dining Experience... Am I being too critical?

We (my parents, DW, DS-2.5) recently had a mostly-wonderful experience on the Wonder.

I say "mostly" because of our dining experience. Maybe my expectations were too high. I'll recount some of the situations and I'd appreciate your feedback.

When we booked the cruise only the late seating for dinner was available so I requested that we be on the wait list for early seating. We were notified on embarkation day that our request was granted and that we would keep our same rotation but dine at 5:30. Fine with me. There's no way our son could survive a 2 hour dinner service at 8 or 8:30. Our 4-night dining rotation was Tritons, Animator's, Animator's, Parrot Cay. We were seated with another couple and their 2.5yo son.

Triton's: Being the first night, we were all in get-to-know-you mode. Service lasted a little more than 2 hours. The other family bailed immediately after the entrees. When dessert menus were passed out, my wife didn't get one. When the server returned to take our dessert orders, though we didn't ask for it she brought a Mickey ice cream for my son. My wife chose not to have a dessert because she had to wrangle our son and a mostly-melted ice cream. She was mildly irritated with this situation. We might have chosen fruit or another type of dessert for our son. After the Mickey ice cream was consumed, but before the rest of the desserts arrived, my wife took our son out to the atrium to see Goofy. When the server returned to our table to find only 3 of us left there, she was visibly irritated and dropped off 6 plates of desserts without regard to whom had ordered what. When the head server stopped by to ask how everything was I asked if there was anything *we* could do to expedite the service. I explained that there was just no way we could make it through a 2 hour service with a toddler. This is our problem so what can we do to make it better? He assured us that the next evening's service would be faster.

Animator's (1): As soon as we arrived the server stood at our table until I had chosen and ordered an appetizer and entree for my son. The assistant server began to bring everyone's beverage of choice and everyone but me received something other than water. The previous night I had ordered a Coke and was thinking I would get one this evening. Eventually I got his attention and asked for a Coke. He returned to the serving station and brought one over. Several people at our table ordered iced tea but there was no sweetener on the table. We had to ask for that. As we consumed our beverages, no refills were offered. We had to ask for that. My father is a meat-and-potatoes guy. He did not order an appetizer. He didn't care for anything that was offered. The server seemed offended that at this. When the appetizers were served, the item I ordered was placed in front of my father. Since he didn't order anything I took it from him. When the server returned with the rest of the items, she again placed a *different* appetizer in front of him. He explained that he didn't order the item. She said it was for him to try. The service this night lasted about 1.5 hours. The head server stopped by and I told him that things were much faster this evening.

Animator's (2): A repeat of the previous night. We had to request refills, we had to request crayons, and my father was served food that he did not want. Food was presented to the wrong person. Each time we made a request for something the server noted it but was making faces like she was completely overwhelmed. She was fanning herself as though she was overheated and rolling her eyes and talking to herself. The service lasted about 1.5 hours this evening. As we were finishing, the server asked how everything was. I said it was "mostly ok." She asked what could have been better. I mentioned the food being served to the wrong person and the missing crayons. My father explained that she ought not be offended if he didn't order something and that she ought not bring him something. He felt that was wasteful. He is a very happy man with a steak and a potato of some kind. She sort of scowled at all this and asked if the speed of service was acceptable. We said that it was.

Parrot Cay: Things finally seemed to click this night. The only 2 bobbles were that I didn't get a dessert menu and desserts were again served to the wrong people. Service lasted a little under 1.5 hours.

Without getting into actual amounts, I chose to tip less than the recommended amount for the server and assistant server. If every service had been like the Parrot Cay service, then I probably would have tipped the recommended amount. I didn't experience anything that led me to tip more than the recommended amount. We presented the tips, as is "customary," on the final evening. Needless to say breakfast the next morning was a somber event. I don't know that any words other than those absolutely necessary to take an order were exchanged. It was terribly uncomfortable.

The overall feeling I got at all the dinner services was that we were a nuisance to the server. As always, there are 2 sides to every story. You're only getting mine, but I've tried to be fair and only report actual events and observations. Is mine a typical dining experience on DCL? Were my expectations too high? Did I do the server a disservice by not tipping the recommended amount?

Thanks for reading my novel.

We've been on 2 - 7 night dcl cruises and have never experienced service like that. I will say for us the meals have always lasted 2 hours. Now the faces and comments etc should have not have happened. I hope you filled out a comment card before you got off the ship even if you didn't please email dcl to let them know. And I don't think it was wrong for you to tip less then recommended. If we had received that service we would have done the same thing.

Thanks for reading my novel.

This sounds more like the two RCCL cruises that we have taken:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

After 16 DCL cruises I can say with confidence that all dinners are not like what you experienced. We have great service about 95% of the time on all our cruises.

It did sound like the server was overwhelmed but who knows what her problem was.

the only thing I can say in their defense is that are really not used to people NOT ordering appetizers....they take the lack of ordering anything as a sign that something is wrong so they bring things out that they think you may enjoy...it is actually going the extra mile but I can see how your dad may think it was wasteful in this day and age. They usually are just trying to please. here is no excuse for putting the food in the wrong spots or not refilling beverages without being asked, or not have sweetener on the table...that should be a given.

Many times they will bring out multiple appetizers or desserts for the whole table to try, even without orderig them...that is just what they do. I think with the ice cream for your son they were again trying to please him and you but may not have realized that you did not want him having a messy ice cream bar...perhaps a dish of ice cream may have been a better choice.

I've been on 3 7 day cruises, and 1 4 day, and I did experience service like that (the looks, etc) on the 4 day, but that was a long time ago. Since then, the wait staff has been excellent.

It could have been any number of reasons, new staff etc, but nothing excuses that kind of treatment. I hope you filled out your survey card appropriately, and if not, or even if, I would contact the cruiseline. 1 bad day, I can see, but that kind of treatment is ridiculous.

We had kids that would run in, we'd tell the staff that they had an activity, they would bring their food out ASAP, and the kids were gone. DH and I enjoyed Getting the table to ourselves. I am sure that they understand youngsters onboard though

Hopefully the experience didn't turn you off, it wasn't the norm, by any means.

On our first 3 night cruise in August, we had an issue with the service. We discussed it with the head waiter, and the next 2 nights were perfect, and our waiter did apologize to us. We were very pleased. If things hadn't improved, then we as you would not have been happy.

On our 7 night cruise in Decemeber, we had an awesome Head waiter and Main Server. The asst server, though nice, was not very good. Wrong drinks, asking for refills. We joked about it and him being new. Well one night our head server and main server spoke to us, and we found out he wasn't new, adn they apologized to us. Seems like this guy just didn't have the knack shall we say. The other 2 bent over backwards to please us and make things better. They more than made up for the drinks being messed up. The head and main servers got a higher tip, the asst server got the suggested tip.

We don't tip at the final dinner, we tip at the final breakfast. If you do it that way, then no akward moments.

Sorry you had such issues, but they really aren't the norm.

My number one pet peeve in the WHOLE world is someone rolling their eyes :rolleyes2 at me, or at something I said :headache:  I will immediately say to them "UNLESS YOU SUDDENLY LOST YOUR CONTACT AND ARE A LOOKING FOR IT UNDER YOUR EYE LIDS, YOU BEST NEVER ROLL YOUR EYES AT ME AGAIN, OR I WILL SNATCH THEM RIGHT OUT" :rotfl: :rolleyes1 It typically gets my point across ::yes::

Y'know, I'm becoming more and more convinced as I read experiences like this that the whole dining "thing" rises and falls on the expertise/care of the server.

On our first cruise, my DW asked for Diet Coke at breakfast. I don't know how much of an anomoly that is, but our server gave us both a "What the ... ?" look before finding said drink. I wasn't offended, but it has stuck with me after all these years.

Sometimes you just want to remind folks, "I am profit, and you are overhead."

I do wear contacts and I have 'lost' them under my eyelid before and BOY does it hurt. :scared1:

BTW, what are the consquences for not tipping the 'suggested' amount? Someone once said that they won't let you book again? popcorn::

I just recently went on my first DC and was also disappointed with the quality of service in the dining room from our server/asst/head server. They say that you should see your head server once per meal. I only recall once, the first night. The asst server left glasses empty all the time, and then would ASK if we wanted a soda refill before our main entree even arrived. There was absolutely no personalized attention at all. The server had a memorized script that he repeated (within earshot) to each of his tables. Nothing like feeling like part of the masses!!

I have been on two non-DCs and had one positive and one negative dining experience. The DC definitely fell in the middle, but I was expecting higher since I was paying more.

My trip report (link below) details more specifics of our dining room experiences. I will say to the OP, you are not alone in your experience!

Honestly, if you aren't happy with the service, mention it to your servers, they normally do everything they can to take care of you. If talking to the server doesn't work, talk to the head server.

In all of the trips we took, we only had the one time that we had bad service. It was our first cruise. DH is alergic to fish, so we decided to skip tritons, and go to Palo's that night, it was the first night of the cruise. The servers had planned to do all of the anniversaries the first night, and were angry at us.

Every other trip, if there was a glitch, or whatever, we talked to the server. DH knows what he can and can't have with fish, and never mentioned it to the server, it isn't life threatening or anything. It came out on the last night, and she looked at us and told us we should have told her earlier, and she wouldn't have suggested fish for DH, etc. We were like it was no big deal, but to her, it was.

She was the sweetest person.

One 7-night cruise, we had a seasoned server attempt to serve me salads that had either mustard in them (allergic) or blue cheese on them (HATE it). I so badly wanted to ask, "why do you bother to ask if there are any allergies or dislikes if you aren't going to pay attention to them?"

I was sorry to hear about the OP's experience with servers on the Wonder. We recently returned from a Wonder cruise and had exceptional service. Our servers, Francisco and Carlton made our dinners a very positive experience. They were efficient, attentive and a lot of fun. Each night they welcomed us to our table like old friends and they did an excellent job of remember preferences and special needs. Since we've come back we've been telling many people about them and the great service that we received. We also had a very positive impression of Carina, the head server. Every night she stopped to talk to us to make sure that everything ws going well.

Oh no, this really bothers me to hear this about the service. Poor service and mediocre food is precisely why we choose not to eat out much here at home. When we go on vacation we are looking forward to having good meals and wonderful service!

Gosh if you were on my 7 day on 4/12/08 I would swear you had our servers.
The servers we had we both very nice and kind but we nick named them slow and slower. We would be sitting for twenty minutes before we had our drink orders taken, often they would give us a dip for our bread and forget the bread, give us food we didn't order and forget to give us our alcohol drink slip. We had to remind them to let us pay for our drinks! It is a good thing we are honest or Disney would be short on booze tabs.
We tipped them the recommended amount but next time we will not be tipping for sub par service or at least not tip the recommended tip.
In short, I feel for you.

I would say that the food on DCL is fair to good but don't expect anything fabulous. If you are looking for really good food on a cruise line you need to go to a premium line like Celebrity or luxury like Crystal

techdude, i'm sorry your experience with service was so bad. i'm also sorry to hear that this is not such an isolated event. it makes me wonder if it's alright to change servers all together if you aren't happy. i wouldn't really want anyone i've complained about handling my food :scared:

the cruise really does cost far too much to tolerate poor service. one night might be a misunderstanding, but three nights! that's really too much. i know that some people become positively chummy with their servers. which is awesome. if they can almost predict what you want - they should get a tip above and beyond the norm. but with the service described here, i'd have cute WAY back on the tip.

i've only been on one disney cruise. the service food service was good, though not memorable. i kinda thought all disney cast members were trained to leave their attitudes at the door. do cruise CM's go through the same training as WDW resort/park CMs?

We don't tip at the final dinner, we tip at the final breakfast. If you do it that way, then no akward moments.

That makes sense. I didn't remember until after we tipped that we'd be seeing them again. :scared:

Y'know, I'm becoming more and more convinced as I read experiences like this that the whole dining "thing" rises and falls on the expertise/care of the server.

We've cruised DCL before and had an excellent service experience. An assistant server that sees me take my straw out of my glass and doesn't serve me a drink with a straw in it for the rest of the trip gets extra from me.

And thanks for your trip report, Dreamfinder2. You have a way with words.

I would say that the food on DCL is fair to good but don't expect anything fabulous. If you are looking for really good food on a cruise line you need to go to a premium line like Celebrity or luxury like Crystal

Agreed. I didn't get anything that I thought was spectacular. They take a piece of fish, a piece of beef (or pork) and a piece of chicken and dress them up for the prom. Now, I ate myself full at every meal, but to say everything we were served was "excellent" would be a lie. Which is another reason why the service is so critical.

just wondering -
Do you think the servers would be offended if I say at the first meal something along the lines of "be prepared; I drink iced tea like a camel drinks water at an oasis (haha)" Our servers were super on our last cruise except for that - and an empty glass is really my pet peeve and has cost many a server a better tip! But on the flip side, I will tip great for great service. (which I went ahead and did last time)

SO...would I be doing them a favor OR being an obnoxious-right-off-the-git-go guest to clue them in???
