Help! I have tons of pictures and kits, but I have not scrapped because it seems totally overwhelming to start! I see all the threads about organizing scraprooms, but I need to organize my computer. Please tell me how. Is there a program I need to buy so that I can sort and search? Any info would be great.

I'm finding myself in the same place as you.

What I'm trying to do is print out small pictures of the Kits (they usually have a sample page), then all the little things like papers, ribbons, buttons etc that aren't in a pre formed kit are all starting to go in their own folders.

My papers I have folders for Dots, stripes, multi coloured, then the rest are fit into folders by colour. Guess it all depends on what you have. Try to categorize them. Eventually I'll begin to print out small samples of each paper then just write the file name on it so I know what it's called. Then I can just look through a Binder and locate what I want (and see what I have).

Hope that makes sense.

I would strongly recommend checking into ACDSee. It is a program that sorts and organizes your digital scrapbooking items (as well as photos, fonts, etc. if you want to do that). I have been using it for about 3 weeks and don't know how I survived without it!

The only drawbacks are 1. it is not inexpensive and 2. it does have a small learning curve. But my guess is, that if you are into digital scrapbooking, you are probably computer savvy enough to learn the program with little effort.

I am using an on-line tutorial that I purchased to teach me how to use the program. It has been well worth the monetary investment. Now I can open ACDSee and search for anything I am looking for.

I am about half way through my digital stash in getting everything sorted and organized in ACDSee. I try to spend 15-30 minutes every couple of days and I'm getting there. Feels great to be organized!

I find that the best system for me is to keep kits together. I have folders with the major shops that I visit, and then subfolders for each designer. Under each designer I have kits separated by kit. I used to separate by item type and colors too but I found it took way too long to find coordinating items and then it took forever to refind things to credit, that I changed to this system which works perfectly for me.

I also have ACDSee, but I never tagged anything, and I have had it almost a year. It takes a long time to tag all your stuff. If you are just beginning, then I would say go for it, but my system seems to work for me and I rarely ever need an item so badly that I wish I had tags. Now, mind you I have a good memory for my items, so others may not. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, but I can pretty much tell you where any little scrap item is on my hard drive... go figure!

If you progress into this addiction farther and eventually end up on Creative Teams, you will want to keep your kits and designers together, since you will using their stuff exclusively on layouts. I had also found that when I wanted to do challenges at various scrap sites, that I had a hard time finding that site's designers to use their products on their challenges (some sites require that), which led me to my current system, which makes that task simple.

My scrap folder looks something like this:

And yes I know not all those designers are still at SM. Eventually I move designers to their new shops. And if a designer sells at more then one shop, I keep all their stuff together and put it under the site I use them most frequently.

I'm just starting in digital and don't have too much stuff but I think I organize it the same way I do my craft room - by category.

So I have folders for:
Ribbons
Tags
Pins/Staples
Clips
Pens
Animals
Floral Paper
Striped Paper
Dot Paper
Brown Paper
Blue Paper
etc., etc.

That works for me because I like to mix and match a lot, but I can see how it wouldn't work for everyone. If I really get into digital I know it could easily get overwhelming :scared:

the way I did it was to make cd's and each cd has each kit preview printed (2 per page) and then I have written on top of each page the cd #. I can fit about a dozen or so cd's in one binder. Hope this helps!
This way when you're looking for a kit, you can easily flip through pages and see what would go well for what you are doing instead of just opening file after file on your pc....

I also sort by category. But I have a folder called 'PREVIEWS'. First I look at my previews to determine which set I want. Say it's called "brits_something".

Then I do a computer search for "brits_something", and all the elements pop up!

Or, if I just need 1 ribbon, I can go to my ribbons folder.

It's not the greatest organization, but it's working so far.

I used to have kits sorted by shop/designer/kit, but I found I never used a lot of stuff that way. Now I sort by designer/kit only. But I've added the shop name to each designer's folder. The exception is alphas, date stamps, templates, and other tools which I have separated out. But I've added the designer's name to each folder's name.

As for photos, I'm still in the process of reorganizing older ones. But for current photos I've got them sorted by year/month (2007/01-January, etc.) for the most part. Some however are sorted by year/category, such as 2007/TRIPS/October WDW Vacation. I only do categories for major things like trips, holidays, school, etc. I tried categorizing all photos but some just don't fit into any category or they'd fit into more than one category and I'd never find them again.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Fran and Robin THANK YOU so much for the visual. That is very helpful! Looks like I have a lot of work to do!

Carolinagirl and Fran---do you just have the acdsee photo manager or do you have the photo editor as well? I have PSE 5 (which I don't really know how to use) and SBC+ which I just got (and haven't really played with). I've heard that this one is good for organizing digital stuff and pics. I'm just getting started with digital scrapbooking, but have already started collecting freebies.
Thanks!
Elena

Elena,

I am using ACDSee Photo Manager 2009. I use PSE 6 for photo editing and digi-scrapping. I find what I'm looking for in ACDSee and then just click and drag it into PSE to use in my layouts. I can't say enough good things about it. I will add, though, that taking the on-line course helped me tremendously. I'm not sure I could have navigated myself through learning ACDSee on my own without the course. At the very least, it would have been alot of trial and error. It was worth every penny!

Hope that helps!

OT-Are you watching the game?

I'll PM you about the course. I don't know if it is OK to plug other websites here.:confused3

Regarding the game...I can't bare to watch so I'm DISing and watching Top Chef. Who's winning?

ok. Did you have to buy acdsee online?
I don't know who's winning the game. I'm not watching either. At half time UNC was winning.

You can download the trial of acdsee from www.acdsee.com. They will send you better and better deals on the software as the end of your trial approaches 9at least that's what happened to me). If anyone wants to see how I have stuff organized in ACDSee, I made a PDF file showing the screenshots of my hierarchy. You can get it here.

Has anyone used PSE for their photo management and if so, does anyone know how it compares to ACDSee?

Memory Mixer by Lasting Impressions, does anyone use this program?

Does anyone know about saving your downloads into MM? I just got both MM and SBC+ but I don't want to get too far into it until I know what I'm going to do with organization. I don't want all the free downloads to get out of control and I know I just won't be able to resist them!!
