Diet Pills

I guess I'm just nervous I'd go in there and my dr. will look at me like I'm nuts and say NO!
Although I really have a great Dr., I would just hate to go in there only to find out she wouldn't do it. And if she did say no, I'm sure she has a good reason. I'm just spazzy about this I guess.

I would find out your thyroid level and make sure you don't need medication for it. Many doctors & labs don't use the correct TSH levels when diagnosing underactive thyroids. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists consider a TSH of 0.3-3.0 normal, I have had labs & internists that think 5.0 is normal. I know from personal experience they are wrong. When my thyroid is out of whack, I get a bloated belly and carry an extra 5-10 pounds. Also, if you are "borderline", it could change in a matter of months.

Well I definately have the bloated belly :rolleyes1 . My last bloodtest thyroid level was 2 which is borderline from what my Dr. says. I will get the newest result on Wednesday since it has been 6 months since it was checked. Also i have a nodule on my thyroid which certainly doesn't help. I have to have and ultrasound done then go from there.

I too would like to know this. I joined Curves last week, started watching what I am eating and trying to make a lifestyle change. I think a jumpstart would really have me stick to this new change.

I am currently 5'4" 180 pounds. When I was pregnant with DD4 I was 130 pounds, now I am heaviest I've ever been.

Please let me know how to go about talking to family doctor about pills.

I need to go see my doctor as well.. I'm 5'1'' and weigh 200 pounds. I lost 20 pounds two years ago but then gained it back for some reason (I don't know why I walk all the time and don't overeat) now, the weight will not budge. I gained too much weight when I was pregnant with my son. I went from 150 to 225. Yes I know but I thought I would be able to lose the weight and sadly that is not the case.

I joined the gym at work and go every 4 days. The weight doesn't want to come off and I am greatly discouraged!

I am very active and watch what I eat.

I have taken diet pills in the past with good results, but as others have said if you don't work hard enough to keep it off it will come back and often more than what you lost in the first place..I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last year and lost 20 lbs with the diabetic diet and taking glucophage for the sugar. I gained 10 back and the sugar began going back up this past month so now I am on Byetta ( it is the saliva from the GILA MONSTER lizard) I inject it in my stomach 2 times a day and it slows down the digestion process therefore I eat less than my 6 and 2 yr old now. Since the 10th of March I have lost 9 lbs. It is crazy at the amount of food I eat now..I have heard they are trying to get it passed off as a weight loss drug...You may talk to your dr. about that if you can stomach the thought of giving yourself a shot. :scared:

I meant to say 4 day a week not every 4 days! LOL!

Okay I changed my appt. to today at 4pm. Do I just come right out and ask for the pill?

Please be careful, guys.... I have had HORRID results with diet pills.. sure you lose weight but my heart was thumping out of my chest ... couldn't breath..and a few times I was delirious... when I was younger I woke up my family thinking someone was coming to get us in the middle of the night. Another time I went to the basement and tried to go to the bathroom in the garbage can.. mind you nowhere near even a bathroom and this was down 3 flights of stairs. No I wasn't drinking.

My best friend's mom had a heart attack in her 40s from taking diet pills when she and I were in high school.

So really.. be sure nothing else works and you're under CLOSE monitor of a doctor when doing this.

Maybe talk about the problems you have had with trying to lose weight and the strategies that you have used.

Then, mention that you read about diet pills and now that they are s hort term solution and yada yada.

I just made an appt today but it isn't until April 3 and I'm going for a physical so .... but my weight is a huge concern for me!

That sounds good. I mean I know this is not a magic pill. I know that I need to do the work. I am alright with that. I already do the work with little to no results. I feel like I just can't budge.
I hate being overweight. I hate not feeling healthy. It's just hard because it's not like I eat junk food all day. I do such a good job at picking healthy choices for my meals/snacks. Just frustraited I guess. And a little nervous.

Talk to your doctor about PCOS.. Polycystic ovarian syndrom. I was diagnosed with this. There are sites that you can actually kind of self diagnose based on symptoms

Am i the only one who cant sleep at night when I take diet pills? It makes me all figety and I cant sleep at all at night. Either my body will rest but my mind wont, or visa versa.

I am so glad to see someone else who has the same problem as I do. I have tried everything, and nothing ever works. I exercise, and walk on the treadmil at least once daily, and still the wieght is there....the bad days are when I actually gain a pound. Oh how I wish I could figure out what to do....any suggestions

Mag I can't sleep when I took them and if I did sleep I was doing strange sleep walking things. It was terrifying.

Ladies, check this site.. seriously if you're exercising and eating healthy, a diet pill won't help. There's something else going on.

This is a great PCOS site..

I just need motivation-- I feel big and unattractive (although I know im not big or unattractive)-- and I just cant get motivated to exercise-- although I see beautiful attractive thin ppl all the time and think "gosh-- i really need to get my butt in gear"-- but for some reason it isnt motivation enough for me. :confused3

OP, I am glad you had the courage to ask about diet pills!! I have been thinking about asking my doctor about them, but haven't had the courage. Now I think I WILL ask him! :) I have tried all of the over the counter diet stuff and nothing works.

To those who are preaching "diet and exercise".... what can I say? You are right. But I don't see you flaming people here on the budget board with "all you need to do is budget" because they are in debt. If I dieted and exercised right I wouldn't be overweight to begin with. Give us fat people a break! Diet pills are better for you than a gastric bypass....

Having my gastric bypass was the best thing I ever did for myself. I now eat like a normal human being. My triggers were always sweets and now I don't even crave them. I am far healthier now. So please don't knock it. For some people it's life saving. By the way I am 8 months out and have lost 115 lbs. with only to 14 more to go. I am VERY happy.

I'm pretty sure Merida is NOT a fat blocker.

Merida is not a fat blocker, Xenical is. Both were introduced to the market at about the same time so often they are mixed up. WIth Xenical you will have to endure the side affects associated with a fat blocker. Merida helps you to curb your appetite. Back when I was in college I used Adipex and a water pill combo. That was the best thing ever for me. I saw the Dr monthly and I was able to maintain the weight loss until I had a difficult pregnancy that required me to use steroids to maintain the pregnancy. Everything feel apart after that! My doctor has since moved away. I continue to struggle and my current Dr. does not believe in pills for weight loss so I have been trying on my own for going on two years--it is a very slow process for me. I lost 40 lbs total last year and hope to do at least that again this year. The frustrating part is that I'm certain with an adipex and water pill combo I would have been done in a year tops! this is when I wish I had a Dr. that ws willing to let me have what I want!:rotfl:

I quite disagree that diet pills are better than gastric bypass!!!!! Diet pills are VERY dangerous.
My friend got gastric bypass and lost over 150 lbs in the past year and is still losing. It saved her life....

If she'd taken pills at her heaviest her heart would've stopped.

Congrats! I'm glad it worked for you.

Don't you have to be at least 100 lbs overweight to even be considered for Gastric Bypass? For those of us who need to lose less than that it is not really an option is it? What about the lapband surgery, anybody know the restrictions on it??

All I know is once I lose the weight I want to my butt is gonna be the first one in the surgery room having a TUMMY TUCK..40 lbs overweight and 2 kids later my mid section looks like a big ol' bowl of JELLY!!!:scared:

I'm surprised by the people who think that just because a Dr. prescribes it to you it is safe. Remember Phen Phen, Vioxx, etc. Unfortunately the pharmaceutical industry has huge power in this country, and your Dr. doesn't have time to research each drug coming out. He has to rely on the FDA, and I'm sorry, they just don't have our backs. There may be pills you have to take, why take pills you don't have to? If you can't make the lifestyle changes pre drug, why do you think you could after you are taken off of a drug that creates an addiction?
An ex co-worker almost died because of diet pills. It was prescribed (sorry, don't remember which one) and considered safe. Well it reduced her appetite and the combination of lower caloric intake, speed like effects of the drug, and lack of sleep (another side effect) caused her to pass out in the kitchen, hit her head, & brake a rib which punctured a lung. She would have bled to death had her husband not been home. Sorry, these pills are not worth the risk.
