Diet Pills

Bumping this back up. I'm thinkng of trying one of these diet drugs. My DR. suggested it even though I'm only 20 lbs. over but he knows how frustrated I am with not being able to lose.

I was thinkng of trying Orlistat, has anyone tried that one? Did you have sucess with it? Meridia would probably be my second choice because Phentermine sounds a bit scary. I have been researching the side effects. Any thoughts or suggestions?

OP, I am glad you had the courage to ask about diet pills!! I have been thinking about asking my doctor about them, but haven't had the courage. Now I think I WILL ask him! :) I have tried all of the over the counter diet stuff and nothing works.

To those who are preaching "diet and exercise".... what can I say? You are right. But I don't see you flaming people here on the budget board with "all you need to do is budget" because they are in debt. If I dieted and exercised right I wouldn't be overweight to begin with. Give us fat people a break! Diet pills are better for you than a gastric bypass....

I don't think anyone is flaming you....what we're trying to say is, take the pills, dont change your lifestyles, and when you stop your going to gain all the weight back.

In order for the pills to work, you have to decrease your calories, and increase your exercise, however, if you do this without the pills, you'll lose the weight too....thats the point we're trying to make.

Why set yourself up to fail? Taking pills will work while you take them, however, read what everyone else has said that has taken them- they have ALL gained the weight back, when they did not change their lifestyle

I wish doctors would offer nutritional support and calorie burning support FIRST and then I'd bet most of the people on the pills, wouldnt need them in the end.

Think about that before you fill the script

It's hard sometimes to make that lifestyle change without the boost that a safe, effective diet drug can do. Of course, if you return to inactivity and overeating you'll regain the weight. but on the diet drugs, if they are right for you, you can develop better patterns and habits, leading to a healthier lifestyle. i didn't regain the weight after phentermine for about 6 months. if i do gain 5 pounds, i just go back on it for a short time, and return myself to normal. i've done this twice in 9 years.......

whatever will work to improve a person's lifestyle and health is the best choice they can make and if it's a diet drug to get it done, hallelujah!!

I was on Phen after my 2nd daughter was born I lost all my baby weight and then some! I only took 1/2 of the 37.5 pills that was enough for me. I was on them for about 45 days... the only reason my weight came back was I got preggo with my son :rolleyes1 Lets just say the droping of the weight played a HUGE factor in that... I felt so much better about myself and well we made DS :rotfl: Even after I stoped using them I maintained my weight loss for over a year.

I agree with the poster that said check with your dr. first. I am one of those that can't take phetermine because of medical condition. I was disappointed at first but then I noticed a friend who was on them for months (she was going to a dr. weight loss center -- not her gp)... yes she lost weight, she ate nothing, she did not exercise -- her personality changed, we are no longer friends and now she is getting a divorce -- but what the heck - -she is thin :sad2: :sad2:

Is the Orlistat one that gives you oily stools? Um -- no thanks.

If it sounds to easy-- it is!

So how did you all go about asking your doctor for the phentermine? What does it do for you?

I am curious as how I should ask my dr. also. I'm 5'3" and 170 lbs. I never used to weigh this much. I used to weigh 130 lbs and when I got pregnant I just couldn't loose the weight. My son is 5 years old now. I do a lot of walking and I do weight watchers. I have lost a few pounds and am really good at watching what I eat. I just can't seem to budge the weight though.

I can't answer whether this pill causes the oily stools, but I do know that the recently FDA approved for OTC diet pill Xenical causes this. It is supposed to be on the shelves sometime this summer. It is a fat blocker. It works on the digestive tract only, so supposedly no heart or BP side effects. I haven't taken it, just read about it when I saw it was going to OTC. OTC strength is 1/2 of RX strength.

I haven't ever taken a diet pill, so I can't provide you any insight. I do wish you all the best, I know how hard it can be to lose the weight AND keep it off.

Pills will only cause you to lose weight temporarily. If you want to come to rely on how the drug makes you feel to lose weight, how miserable will you be when you can no longer take the drug? That in itself will cause you to over eat... which is why people gain it back twice as fast as they lose.

I read a really interesting article the other day about thinking thin. I wish I could remember where I read it. In any case, it discusses keeping a small card with you at all times upon which you've written down all the reasons you'd rather be thin, no matter what they are, i.e., "to feel better about myself" or "so I am thinner than my sister in law" or "because I want to look hot in a bikini on vacation" and pull it out to reinforce the choices you have to make daily in order to get thin. It supposedly conjures up the imagery we use to fantasize and may actually ease cravings... FWIW.

Good luck (and stay off the pills)

Anyone know anything about Bontril? I guess the drug name is phendimetrazine? DH is taking it.

You know, there might be some truth to that:thumbsup2 . My have visions of a thinner me at WDW, and that has seemed to ease my cravings, in the past month. I've also began walking on my treadmill, with an increased incline, at least 3 to 4 times per week (although this past week it was 5 times). I've lost 5 lbs in a month. If I can do this until our trip, I will be in much better shape for walking in the parks AND look a little better in my swimsuit at the water parks.

Hmmmm...guess I just need a semi annual trip to Disney as my inspiration to lose weight. Let me run that one by DH....:rotfl:

You sound alot like me after my second child I just could not lose no matter what I eat or not or how much I exercise. I do have some thyroid issues though I'm borderline so meds are not really necessary for me. I weighed 108 lbs. when I got pregnant with DD and after DS (will be 3 in May) I weigh 140 lbs. and I'm 5'2". That is 20-30 pounds over what I should be. I would be happy with 120 lbs. Also most of my weight is belly and I love when rude people ask if your expecting  just because you have a pouchy tummy. So my Dr. offered me the pills and I 'm considering trying them or seeing if I can tolerate them. If they make me irritable and my heart race or insomnia then I will have to quit.

As far losing and gaining it back, I don't plan on letting that happen. I'm sure I will love fitting back into my clothes.

Alright I made an appt. to talk to my dr. on Wednesday. So how do I go about asking for the phentermine?

I too would like to know this. I joined Curves last week, started watching what I am eating and trying to make a lifestyle change. I think a jumpstart would really have me stick to this new change.

I am currently 5'4" 180 pounds. When I was pregnant with DD4 I was 130 pounds, now I am heaviest I've ever been.

Please let me know how to go about talking to family doctor about pills.

I would find out your thyroid level and make sure you don't need medication for it. Many doctors & labs don't use the correct TSH levels when diagnosing underactive thyroids. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists consider a TSH of 0.3-3.0 normal, I have had labs & internists that think 5.0 is normal. I know from personal experience they are wrong. When my thyroid is out of whack, I get a bloated belly and carry an extra 5-10 pounds. Also, if you are "borderline", it could change in a matter of months.

My doctor is a great doctor. He always seems to ask about my family, health history, etc. Last year -November I think, I mentioned to him that after 4 kids I'm too tired, but need to lose weight!! So he suggested the phentermine and said he'd prescribe it but only for 3 months and that's it. It would be up to me to change my eating habits/lifestyle. I still haven't filled the prescription. I'm scared to take the pills. But I think I'm going to start them this week. I just feel that I have to be ready-life is kind of hectic right now! He did say he wanted me to come in to weigh and check blood pressure each month I was on the pill. He said there's no charge to check blood pressure and weight-so to come in anytime!!

I think I might start off with half a pill for a few weeks just because I'm chicken!

I'm one of those horrible librarians who sees articles like these, writes it down on a scrap of paper, and usually then can't find the scrap, but I liked this article so much I DID keep the scrap. It was from a book called "Beck Diet Solution", and the website is beckdietsolution.com I thought it sounded fascinating, too, and have it ordered from my local pulic library!

Just have to chime back in, I recommended the phentermine. I have been on it under the direction of my doctor. It did wonders for my self esteem to lose almost 40lbs....AND during the time when I was losing, I was making good decisions on nutrition, exercising, drinking lots and lots of water, etc. I did and have made a lifestyle change. Could I have done it without the phentermine? Probably, but it would have been a lot harder! Believe me,I still have a ways to go, but the phentermine has gotten me to a point where I feel like I CAN do it...now it's all me.

Good luck whatever you decide!

This was my attitude, and it worked. I was prescribed phentermine about 3yrs ago. After the 2nd month my DR. stated "don't get to comfortable w/this pill, it's not a wonder drug. It's to help you get started." I took her advice to heart. and lost most of my weight after I was off the drug.

The drug did help me realize I can do this on my own. I am one of the few that had no side effects what so ever. In fact as soon as I started using the drug I had more energy. I realize it was not the drug, but what I was not eating because of it.
