Oh man, you sound just like the smarmy little kid in grade school who tries so desperately to kiss *** and become the teacher's pet. Problem is, this is the real world now and those types rarely get ahead in the long run. If I worked with you, as a co-worker or manager, I would never trust you. You sound so desperate for approval it is almost pathetic.

Also, you may think you are helping yourself get ahead, but you are also breeding resentment around the office - and the higher ups will notice that too.

Wow! Such harshness towards the OP!

Co-workers are all the time expressing their fears and frustrations with me. Most of the time I just smile, nod and sympathize with them and encourage them to talk to management if it is really bothering them because that is what I would do. I think sometimes people just want to vent their frustrations out loud and are not necessarily looking for an answer. I think that's why everybody keeps coming in my office and sitting down and talking to me because they know I will keep my mouth shut. I swear, I need a couch in here.

As for myself, I would never say anything to a co-worker that I wouldn't say in front of management. That's just the way I am.

As for your situation now, I would just quietly do my job and keep my mouth shut. Hopefully this will all blow over, but definitely chalk this one up as experience.

This is probably wasted breath on my part. If the conversation takes place away from management ears, that should be a clue that they didn't want management to hear the conversation. Also you stated a few pages back, that at least you didn't run and tattle when some of them were wanting to leave early due to Charley. For heaven's sake, they thought a hurricane was going to hit!! For the record my bosses, sent me home 4 hours early last Friday. No reflection on my work ethic. If anything, my bosses were concerned for my safety (nasty thunderstorms were headed our way) and the safety of my house. Take it from someone that has played in the corporate America playground for almost 25 years. Go to work, do your job, mind your own business and tell management NOTHING of the conversations between you and your co-workers. Define the word professional to me. I don't understand why you make the assumption that they are not professional. Do they do their jobs as they are paid to do it? I am just curious as to why you have decided they are not professional.

You had an opportunity to earn the respect of your co-workers, which is extremely important to succeed, and to make an even better impression to managers and you blew it.

Here's a clue......when there's a chance that a Hurricane might be headed directly your way-as Charley was- no one has the right to make you work and put yourself in harm's way. I learned this the hard way 2 years ago when our twentysomething "supervosor" refused to let us go home at 1pm when Hurrican Allison was dumping heavy rains on us-we were not directly in it's path...by 3pm, My DH had to get me in the truck, I left my car at work and a bunch actually had to spend the night at the office due to flooding.

HW, I think you did good on the job. If some people are annoyed with you where you work, they'll just have to get over it! Sometimes managing means doing some things that won't be too popular around the office. That's the way it goes, and if your coworkers don't understand that, then...OH WELL!

I don't know which of the posters than answered the OP are in this "group", but the way that I see it is she asked for advice and she received it. Now if she didn't like the advice she received, that's another issue. I've always been of the opinion that if you don't want to hear the answer, dont ask the question.

He didn't make us work Friday....he let us leave two hour early on Thursday.
As far as being management goes, I'm the only one of the clerks that they're looking at as having management potential even though two do have seniority over me.

I'm sorry Becki, but I would have to agree with many of the other posters here that said it wasn't a good idea for you to take their concerns to management. If they had questions or concerns, they could have taken that to management themselves. That is not your job, no matter how close you are to the management. Just because you are given work that may require more responsibility than the work they are given, still doesn't make you higher on the "ladder" than your co workers. I also think that you are stirring up resentment towards you from your coworkers, and that can catch up with you. People will notice that. They will get over it, yes... But they certainly won't forget it. As a clerk yourself, working in such an atmosphere means working as a team. And I would bet that your co workers did not exactly see your actions as part of a team effort.

While I understand your taking the initiative and trying to display some leadership qualities, you should really be careful with situations like these. Your coworkers want to trust you. I am a true believer that you can get ahead by working hard and being consistent in your work, and trying to go above and beyond what is expected of you... But there are limits and boundaries, and those should be respected. You should never go above someone's head to make yourself look good.

You would think if they were considering you for a management position that they would have ou busy enough to where you would not be able to Dis all day at work.You get paid to work not Dis.If I were your manager I would be highly ticked if you were on the computer dising all the time instead of working.

If you think she was asking for advice, more power to you. When the majority of the people on this thread agree that what she did wasn't smart, she insists that she knows what she did was right. I don't think she wanted advice...she wanted people to say "Great job, Honeywolf! You really are such a strong leader!"

HW, your constant need to have everyone's approval, your constant need to pump yourself up (perfect SAT score! fastest typist! showing leadership abilities! kissing up to management! boyfriend after boyfriend!), is worrisome. I think you need to seek counseling to find out why you rely on others to make you feel good about yourself. That should come from within.

A) Yes, I was teacher's pet in most of my classes in school but not because I asked for homework (I had a tendency not to do homework myself.) I was teacher's pet because I was the smartest in most of my classes and because I was quiet and listened to what the teacher had to say.
B) I'm kind of the one who is the most caring around the office (comforts people having bad days, listens to my manager gripe about the owner and the reviewers, shares snacks, etc.) That's what I was trying to do when I went to my manager....find a way to have my coworkers comforted about their fears.
C) I rarely DIS at work, but I am allowed to take lunch and am allowed to take two 15 minute breaks during the day....I usually break my breaks up and that's fine with my manager.....If you added up the time I spend DIS'ing, you wouldn't get more than the amount of time they're legally required to give me for breaks.
